Scaling to player power is a really bad solution to the out of control ilevel inflation - which is a self-inflicted problem Blizzard made for themselves with their insistence on 4 tiers of raid difficulty with +15 between them b/c that’s the only increase that feels “meaningful.”
I haven’t tried to solo any of last xpac or Legion’s raids or dungeons since the prepatch so I didn’t know this but thanks for the heads up from all you previous posters because at least now I know when I have a bit of free time not to waste my time until it gets fixed, if it gets fixed.
It’s got to be a mistake, I’m sure it’ll get fixed. If not they’re dumb.
what would you want to revive BFA content again, take those memories away from your brain!!
Sounds like a bug, since that shouldn’t happen.
I wouldn’t get bent out of shape over it.
Level scaling is fine…ilvl scaling needs to die in a fire. Going back to do old content at least “somewhat” easily is one of the major activities for people who don’t raid competitively and especially when mogs/mounts are locked behind it.
We assumed ilvl scaling was a mistake… until Blizzard had to admit that they did it deliberately and didn’t think anyone would notice.
Even at level 50, after the pre-patch, killing BfA mobs took WAY longer. “Azerite” world quest bosses I’d two-shot to death before the pre-patch were now needing to be whittled down again. In the exact same gear, at the exact same level, before Shadowlands even opened.
It is surely deliberate.
It’s been a topic of conversation on these forums since beta. Blizzard knows about it, has done nothing to fix it and hasn’t bothered to explain it, implying that it’s “working as intended”.
Ilvl between difficulties wasn’t the culprit.
It didn’t go eg. 300, 315, 330, 345 then 360, 375 etc. There was overlap between them.
The real problem was expansion launches wiping the slate clean by throwing over 100 ilvls at it out of the blue.
I’m aware, but i doubt anyone could actually pin down ‘why’ they weren’t as powerful, otherwise wowhead would not be reporting on it now, they’d have been reporting on it then.
The fact that you think this is somehow ‘intended’ is laughable. It’s obviously not. I highly doubt someone at Blizzard was like: “Oh, yeah I’m just going to delberately make BFA monsters scale with ilvl beyond level 50 to mess with old content farmers. Mwahahaha.”
It was likely something that got complelely overlooked, and since no one could pin down what was causing the problem, it wasn’t addressed properly (every thread I saw was attributing the mess to the stat squish and the AoE cap, not ilvl scaling).
Hanlon’s razor is a principle or rule of thumb that states, “never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity”
they could just make the loot scale and blam, you got whole extra set of content people could run.
beats running the same 8 dungeons all the time
I place lvl and ilvl scaling worse than removing talent trees, pruning and homogenized classes. Progressively getting more powerful over the life of the game relative to the mobs in the game is a RPG staple. I understand that scaling makes content more relevant for a longer period of time and gives players options whe leveling, but its not worth the trade off.
Gear progression used to be my goal in the game via dungeons and raids, but there isn’t a point anymore to gaining new gear when mobs just scale with you. Now I just focus on completing all the quests for the story and when I feel I’ve reached a point in the story that its too heavily time gated where I’m waiting more than I’m playing, ill just unsub until the next batch of story is released. Maybe not even that.
Since I started playing in Wrath, I’ve only been subbed for a total of 2 years. The rest I’ve just skipped and as time passes so will the length of my breaks to the point where ill just stop buying WOW expansions.
I suspect this “mistake” is about keeping us focused on current content for end of year metrics that they can show the investors, most whom probably know nothing about the actual game “look at how successful the expansion is, look at all the player engagement we have in the new content.” then they will get around to fixing the “problem” some time in jan when they don’t have those reports looming.
or if i’m being more genrous about it, they probably figure that the majority of players will be focusing on current content instead of going and farming old content so quickly. so are using their limited development time between now and the holiday break to try and fix as much of the new stuff as they can.
When you are caught up in SL stuff some like to back here and iron out stuff here and tie up loose ends.
Ideally its more fun to do when easier Like at BFA release a 120 with even open world gear could have some work in argus for AR’s easier. The grind still was not fun. But…at least argus was easy low shots to kill.
I personally had plans to go back and hammer out PF and such. I didn’t like naz and mecha when current. I wanted to hit this 60 and stronger to be less grindy.
That plan changed…
That is pretty crappy. I remember at the end of legend people were soloing mythic dungeons and now 10 levels later can’t go back and do old content.
Ilvl scaling is a horrible mechanic to have in a MMO where the whole purpose is to earn gear and get stronger.
No, legacy is after 11 levels, not 10. We’d have to be lvl 61 for legacy loot to kick into for BFA.
I’m talking about Legion there
Oh yeah it should be there. They messed it up with the new scaling.
No thanks, not in a thousand years.
I will argue this any time someone brings up scaling every expansion to the current one.
I do not want to farm the same trinket (hello arcano crystal) or tier set for another 10 years, replacing it every time the ilvl goes up.
the only good thing i can think of the old content scaling is for those quests where you have to weaken a mob’s HP: then you won’t be one shotting them. but then they also could re-code those old quest types to be like the maw intro quest where the target mobs become unhittable after whittling away their HP
this character is at level 52 and now i am wary of taking on BfA WQ elites i was formerly able to solo, like the huge observer one in Nazmir
