BfA as a whole for me, random player #954213

I don’t check the forums often but whenever I do, i see a lot of negative. Given that i’m still mostly enjoying my time in BfA, I figured i’d post my own review of the expansion. What did or didn’t work for me and my ideas to improve some of these systems if they return in future expansions.

Bfa Questing / Story - Is awesome. I enjoyed both alliance and horde side story-lines and can’t wait to see what comes next. Plz burn more trees, and surprise kill some important characters, Game of Thrones style. The more drama the better. I want to see capitals fall! This is war!

Core stuff - The basics that make up wow are all there and as good as ever. Dungeons, Raids, allied races, it’s all golden and if that’s all there was, i’d be content. Unlike some people i don’t need new systems every expansion to keep me entertained. If the base game is there and it’s good, i’m having fun! I sometimes feel like people are bored of that and are expecting a new game to somehow sprout out of wow. That being said, the ‘extra’ systems this time around aren’t as awesome as they were in Legion for me.

Azerite armor - I liked the idea, but really I don’t pay attention to it that much. It doesn’t feel as cool as an artifact weapon. I wish it brought more unique things to different classes but maybe the 5th ring will bring that. What was cooler about the artifact weapon + legendaries was that you had both “upgrades” that would follow you forever on the artifact weapon and fun customization with the legendaries. Azerite gear is like having only legendaries but with more customization on them, you just don’t have those permanent upgrades which the artifact weapon gave.

Leveling / progression - To me one of the coolest rewards is being able to do more with my character. New spells, new effects on spells. This is why to me the upgrades on the artifact weapon felt so awesome and I found myself wanting to unlock them. I find that to also be the main issue with leveling a new alt. you have vast periods of time where you won’t get a new spell for several levels. I personally would be totally fine with a “level squish”. I would have no problem logging in to find out there are now only 50 levels, but you unlock something cool at each of those levels.

Island expeditions - Since I find myself not caring much about Azerite gear, I only do these out of necessity. I thought they’d be fun, a lot like running rifts in Diablo 3 but in the end I didn’t enjoy them that much. Loot wise I find there’s too many things and too many criteria to get them so I mostly gave up. It’s easier for me to just farm gold and buy the stuff I want on AH that way I can target the things i want. When something can only drop off a fire elemental, and the fire elementals only show up when you’re almost done, and people don’t care about going after them… makes getting the things they drop really difficult to get unless you only run with friends who want the same things.

I find that pug island expeditions often lack leadership. So often I get a group and people just start running their own way, splitting up… I wish there was either a tank which others would have to follow or risk dying, or make things more soloable, so each of the 3 players can go do their own thing and still contribute. Then also allow the AI to split up. Have the rogue attack the lone druid who’s decided he would gather azerite from herbs rather than kill things.

the danger from being alone shouldn’t be from the mobs but from the other faction. I wanna be able to go explore the ruins on the north side of the island… but my two teammates insist we round up crocodiles for 7 minutes. Ok guess i’ll just hit my rotation while watching Netflix.

Warfronts - They’re not bad, but they ended up feeling more like an AI battleground with turn-ins than something with RTS elements.

I think they would’ve worked better with smaller groups, and have people vote on what to do next. like the players are a ‘council’ of 5 or 10 generals who are fighting on the front lines but also have to make decisions. We just got enough resources to build either a barracks or a blacksmith, which should we build? Council voted barracks, done!

Then allow troop recruitment on the field so you don’t have to fly back all the time. Each player has his own little group of 10 NPCs to run around the map with. Just enough to maybe take a base on your own, depending on what you recruited. You could scout a place and know that you need two interrupts, a tank and a healer to take it on your own, or the enemy has 20 units so you have to ask help from another player.

Other stuff

  • I REALLY enjoyed the Mage Tower challenges from Legion, and hope to see something similar in BfA. Except the healer one. Maybe a slightly less painful tank one.

  • I kinda wish there were more “RPG” elements related to professions. It’s difficult get a balance between ‘fun’ and ‘necessary’ but I liked that you used to have these crazy patterns in classic that would require farming dungeons. It just got lame when you had to craft full sets of these to run a raid. But if it was just one item that you had to craft, and it would require pieces from every profession. That could be nifty. All professions need to come together to craft the Armor of Awesomeness needed to defeat King Megaboss. At least one person must be wearing one because megaboss kills everyone not wearing one when you defeat him.

Nice review, i agree with most of your points, i like the idea of the warfront council, the option that things could be different each time would make it more interesting, i only do it for the weekly at the moment.

These forums are so consistently negative they can start to effect how you enjoy the game so be careful if your going to start visiting more often

I stopped playing about a month ago. BFA is in the worst state I have ever seen for an MMO (excluding maybe that awful The Matrix MMO). And 8.1’s features really drive home the point that the dev team does not understand our concerns.

Blizzard is now a budget developer and WoW shows it. BFA is just rehashed Legion.

8.1 we get paragon levels with rep and invasions. Yawn…bore.

Great review, especially from someone who isn’t part of the forum hive mind.

I too really, really hope BFA has a Mage Tower 2.0 that would make it perfect IMO.
