Beta Players, how’s caster Holy Paladin?

Heya All,

So come Dragonflight I’m thinking of switching it up going back to nostalgia of playing WoW years ago, it’s tie between Resto Druid (Druid being my first character ever created) and Holy Paladin (caster build, great nostalgia there).

Has anyone here tried Holy as a Caster Build on the beta?, if so do you think it would be viable for High Keys and Mythic Raiding?.

I love the nostalgia going back to how Holy Paladin once was but not sure if it be even viable, I’m asking cause I have my Dragonflight Preorder boost to use and determining which class to use it on to start gearing now and ofcourse collecting transmog moving forward into Dragonflight.

Thoughts and opinions for those who’ve tried it??.

So far I don’t think the devs are taking caster holy paladin seriously despite what they say and the talents they tweak.

There is so much more that can be done, like re-tuning our holy light and flash of light to be strong again, IoL being a fast cast again, reducing holy power generation so the spec isn’t dominated by it, having judgement OR crusader strike give holy power, bring back more group healing cds like Guardian of Ancient kings, change the stupid mastery, and so forth.

Melee will dominate because of dps and holy power generation.

Depend on what you mean by viable? damage-wise they’ll always be behind melee hpal simply because most of your damage comes from Consecration, and SotR.

Not in the Beta, but a few thoughts on the caster Holy Paladin. And when I say caster, I mean at least standing at mid-range-ish and not melee -

  1. I think healing-wise it will be 100% viable. However, when damage counts like mythic plus (higher keys anyway), not like a +4 or something, you will be missing out on consecration, crusader strike, and shield of the righteous. If you pick up Veneration talent, you should recoup some of that missed damage but still missing quite a bit. Maybe with FoL and HL and spenders doing the healing, you could pump more HS into mobs and bosses.

  2. Depending on talents you choose HoPo generation should be fine. At my haste levels, I can get like 14 crusader strikes every 60 seconds. You will be able to get that.

  3. As a player, feels like it will be melee style for mythic plus and you can choose to go full caster during raids. Note: Maybe you could go caster for mythic plus, but you would still miss on damage. I guess maybe you could go ham in melee at the start of the fight and then step back to healing the next 2/3-ish of the fight.

My two cents (actually 3 with inflation).

Nostalgia will be the doom of holy pally in competitive content, specially for m+. In raids i think you will be sniped by every other healer, unless they change IoL to make HL cast faster

so a shockadin type paladin cant be done well?

Dont think shockadin count as Caster Holy Paladin tough. I think its somewhat in the melee build.

Reading some of these comments, let’s be clear about one caveat of caster style Holy Pally (healing wise at least) - just because it’s “caster” doesn’t mean Holy Shock doesn’t get used - you can still spec into Glimmer, Divine Toll, Sanctified Wrath, Divine Purpose, Second Sunrise, Afterimage, and others. There’s still tons of quick and powerful heals.

Let me start by saying … I have been playing a caster hpal in SL with a very limited toolkit in M+. Dragonflight brings a ton of new things and combos for caster hpals. Here is the build I have been planning and will be testing: https://www.wowhead.com/beta/talent-calc/paladin/holy/DANFFZUkBUFUhRKFCQBOVVVBVQQYhUQEgVDREA

All hpals will have combos to try. I think it will be alot of fun for all playstyles.

That’s a nice set-up. Tough choice RE: Blessing of Summer, but it’s hard to give up Second Sunrise - that second LoD can proc Awakening.

How’s the DPS profile as a caster holy Paladin?, everything I’ve looked at says for it to be viable consecration and crusader strike need to be ranged or they’ll contribute nothing.

Been googling and watching people on YouTube on their opinions.

You generally don’t want to play Glimmer without Crusader’s Might. otherwise the output just isn’t there, you can even test it right now with Kyrian-Glimmer-Crusader’s Might.

Glimmer build, even at their peak in BFA, was tuned around casting Holy Shock every other GCD after CS.

If Glimmer can be played without Crusader’s Might, then Glimmer will be broken when played with Crusader’s might, that talent is destined to fail.

why couldnt we have a ranged, holy spellcaster paladin?

a holy melee paladin is a retribution and prot paladin.

Hammer of wrath talents in the DF tree look really promising

Judgment not generating holy power (they had a talent in the base paladin tree that made judgment generate a holy power and they removed it so that holy would not get access to it lmfao) is one of the worse designs in hpal history

Without denounce hpal hasnt had meaningful ranged damage, i’m really disappointed we didn’t get a ranged casted equivalent to smite/wrath/crackling jade lightning/shaman things that every other healer has

Losing harsh words was also pretty much the end of shockadin

So basically as of right now, Caster Holy Paladin is really a meme spec??, no damage and low holy power generators!?

Yeah and no mastery to combo with

As I’ve said, I can’t see anything they have done to enhance the caster version. They refuse to change IoL or the mastery. They brought back Divine Favour as a nerfed pvp talent apparently. Someone please enlighten me as to what Blizz has done to make hpal a caster again?

It’s garbage. it’s - at best - mediocre in PvE and basically unplayable in PvP.
They never should have tried to make ranged Holy a thing again in PvE.

We’ll have to wait and see what tier brings us but I’m not very optimistic.

Tell me what is so fun about melee dpsing while healing? Is that your main? Do you do high mythic + or heroic end bosses?
