What is the best way to obtain gear to be competitive in a battleground or in a pvp setting in general? Am I better off with honor gear or delves, great vault, etc.? Thank you.

sit in warmode out in dornagul and get the war chest every 15mins for 60 conquest, 150 honor and 50 blood coins.

Turn on war mode.
Every 15min a plane will show up and talking head will tell you to go after it
Follow it and when it lands, start taking the chest, takes like 8 secs
Collect loot and wait 15min again for the next
I hit 80 yesterday on my warlock and in a few hours I’ve gotten this much currency just sitting afk out in dorn while playing marvel rivals on my other monitor

There are also raid groups going that only do the war chests. It’s quite a bit faster than doing actual PvP as far as gearing goes. That said, I would still get your one win for crafted pieces. Depending on your spec, you might start with crafting the neck and rings. That will give you something to immediately start tossing honor/sockets, enchants, and embellishments. Then it’s just doing any PvP quests that come up for bloody tokens. Doesn’t hurt todo your main daily bg, as well as the weekly quests, but I’d avoid epics.

That sounds like a good time. I’ve been thinking of getting Marvel Rivals myself and giving that a hoon
At a minimum, you can get PvP greens in a couple hours. I think it took me a single evening to get the basic pvp gear for this season. The barrier to entry can appear steep, but it’s really not. Unfortunately you just have to accept getting pasted until you have a full set of the gear.
The others in here offered good advice too. Regardless of the path you choose, I wish you luck.

The war crate idea is a great way to get conquest. If you join a LFG to do it with a raid group you likely wont fail to get it on any attempts.
If you played last season and have any honor saved up you can transfer honor to the character than needs honor gear. Bloody token gear is slightly better than Honor gear and slightly lower than conquest, so world pvp is relevant for the time being.
As far as earing currency from content, do what you like. I prefer solo bgs (Rated BGs). You’ll want to earn 2500 conquest asap for the free pvp weapon, and if you earn 1600 rating in any rated pvp content you get a free charge to turn pvp gear into pvp adjusting ilev raid gear for the set bonuses. Slots that can be tier set gear is chest, head, legs, gloves, and shoulders. You’ll also want two pieces of crafted pvp gear with embellishments, and you get the currency to do this from your first rated win I think.
Crate groups are the best if you dont want to do rated. A crate every 2-5 minutes for 60conquest, 50 blood tokens, and 150 honor

I guess another question I had is whether it would be viable for me to gear exclusively through pve, and then expect to be competitive in a pve setting.

You want PvP gear. It has a PvP specific item level.

pvp gear has a higher vers stat than normal pve gear also if that helps. You can honestly gear through pve just fine but conq gear in pvp is pretty much free if you pvp in the game at all tbh. So its absolutely possible to use pve gear yes but pvp gear isnt rng based you get what you want.

Maybe I am overestimating how difficult it is to obtain conquest gear. To be honest I was unaware of this crate system. And I was unsure how to obtain the requisite ilevel to queue for rated content.
im pretty sure blitz brings ur ilvl up to what you would be in honor gear. 1 random bg win will give u 9reagants to craft pvp gear. i just went with rings and neck. if your doing wq’s with warmode on youll have plenty of bloody tokens to buy a couple epic warmode pieces (3ilvl below conq gear) thatll fill out a few slots as well. Dont buy weapons anymore when u hit 2500 conq youll get a quest for a free one. You can fully gear and never step foot in rated content as well it just takes longer.

I just came back after basically not playing at all during Dragonflight. Long-time, super-casual BG Hero.
Honor gear is very fast to farm. Of course, you’ll get blown up when you first start. That’s just PvP. When you’re farming the first honor set in BGs, you’re basically getting a new piece every other match. You’ll start to feel the upgrades quickly.
As others above have mentioned, Conquest from War Mode Supply Crates is pretty amazing for getting to the running seasonal cap. You’re also getting Bloody Tokens from anything that happens in War Mode (world quests, crates, etc). You’ll hit the basic Conquest and Bloody Token caps quickly.
Also, the weekly quests for battlegrounds, epics, arenas, brawls, etc can be very profitable. There’s enough currency to go around that if there’s one of those that you really hate, don’t worry about skipping it.

I usually do random bgs on my main for esaier wins, then funnel that to my alts
I didn’t know about crate farms till I read this thread, this was insanely easy for very little work
Get bloody tokens for 675 gear
Get 2500 conquest for free weapon
Craft gear from conquest you get
Did all this from crate farm. It’s kinda boring, but beats going into BGs with 5 mil less HP than other people
Then do instanced PvP for a high chance at the quest that gives you mats for crafted gear
You’re basically full PvP gear for 1-2 hours farming
This is the best way for alts. You can basically skip Honor gear, completely.

Most groups won’t invite you for world PvP if you aren’t geared.
This is why I suggest running crafted, then honor or straight to conquest / war mode tokens. You will get farmed without any gear, or if your in PvE gear. It will take a while to farm the tokens which no one seems to be telling you.
Guess you could try to cheese war mode PvP and form your own group.
don’t listen to the hunter though.
