For mage healer to be good, they require good coordination with other healers in your raid. In a high skill environment where your healers are coordinating effectively, mage healer is very good. Outside of that, they are not great, as them setting up beacons takes too long then other healers snipe the heals, resulting in wasted beacons and mana for them, leaving them much less effective healers.
