If you take your time and level a tank up through the ranks vs. boosting, doing dungeons as you go, you’ll likely have a great sense of how to play any of them by max level.
There are lots of end-game subtleties to each class that take practice to get right, but if you’re serious about tanking then it’s worth taking the time to really learn the role. I personally have enjoyed tanking on every class except my Druid. That isn’t to say tanking on Druid isn’t AMAZING, it just wasn’t personally my style. I love my Druid in other roles.
My point is that tanking is more about understanding the role and seeing mechanics in a different way than picking the best/easiest class. If you level up a class through the content and learn through different failures, by the time you hit max level you’ll be arguing on these threads about the finer points of Stagger vs. SotR vs. Demon Spikes and helping others to take their first steps.
The worst path to take IMHO is to boost a class to max level, jump into a dungeon as a tank, and get frustrated when mobs are running every which way and murdering your DPS, or when bosses are one-shotting you for what seems like no reason on an otherwise great run. You’ll likely end up getting frustrated or overwhelmed. Tanking end-game is a whole different view of the world, and an insanely rewarding one that just takes some practice!
My rotation and mitigation is one of the best things I have mastered from any tanking class. I feel way more unkillable on my DH then I feel on my other classes aside from maybe my Paladin. And like I said it was one of the easiest things to learn. And as I also mentioned earlier I quit tanking on my Monk because I ended up crying in normal dungeons due to my bad damage mitigation and not understanding what I did was wrong.
He’s right about that Demon Spikes are our damage mitigation but the recharge time on that is pretty fast and unless you wanna be better at your class and want to start min maxing you can just spam that whenever you feel like you are taking to much damage… (Though I do recommend learning when to use it at the right times.) Also we got Meta and Last Resort as well, as our well… our last resort.
I disagree, spirit bomb is something you should always use when you have 5 orbs up. Unless in a super dire situation where you need insta health from orbs or maybe in PvP. The damage you do with Spirit Bomb is effectively better because it adds to the healing you gain for doing damage.
DH is pretty easy to learn, geared properly you shouldn’t have any problems. Just finish leveling him and do a couple of world bosses to get the rotation down. I prefer BDK, but it’s always been my primary tank.
For a basic and simple rotation:
Sigil of Flames > Infernal Strike > Fiery Brand > Fracture > Fracture > Spirit Bomb at 4/5 Orbs > Immo Aura
Demon Spikes on medium damage
Meta on very heavy damage intake or near death
Disrupt > Sigil of Silence > Imprison to prevent spell casting
Thats all to it. Most of your rotation for survival is also your damage rotation. The only thing to worry about is tossing in a Demon Spikes once in a while. And even with that on low level dungeons you can ignore doing that.
What about small hits ? Just take them and try to heal them up ?
Literally things Monk doesn’t even worry about because Stagger and Ironskin brew is up 100%.
What dungeons are you comparing Monks/DHs in exactly ?
Demon Hunters start at level 99 and get talents very often in Legion content, compared to monks who have theirs spread out over larger periods of time. You’ll be without your top talents on monks much longer which might make it seem more painful to tank on (prior to getting Bob and Weave at least).
Like I said its your opinion vs mine. Yes I take leveling experience into this because thats one of the biggest learning factors for me on doing a new class.
Yes a DH learns everything in the first 10 levels of creation vs a Monk who goes spread is over 110(?) levels or so.
So a big part of that contributes to my opinion why I think Monk tanking is hard. As my experience with it shows that. Especially the 50 - 80 range which is just plain brutal compared to any other tank.
Mechanically, and from a theorycrafting point of view, mine is not an opinion. Monk simply currently trashes Demon Hunter, both requiring much less effort and being much better at taking the hits.
You get Light Brewing at level 45. Bob and Weave is not as big, and you get that at 75. You also have Statue at 60 to take some aggro off yourself or ring to get ennemies away while your healer catches up.
While you do not have High Tolerance until level 100, that shouldn’t be an issue until you actually tank hard hitting things.
Sounds to me like you simply were not keeping Ironskin Brew up at all if you were struggling.
I guess? I dont wanna discredit your believes on the matter. Im just saying that from someone who mained Monk and DH, Ive had much easier time learning my DH then my Monk, and you cant say I didnt because you didnt have my experience. The only thing I can give you is that the last time I played Brewmaster was during Legion, so there is that.
Your experience is simply not something that has any basis in the game currently at any level of tanking. Stagger is just that strong and it’s why it’s getting a nerf in 8.3
… Seriously. Do you realise how wrong about Monks that makes you ? (DH was much stronger in Legion than it is now comparably to other tanks, meaning if you only played BM in Legion, you just don’t know how much better it is now than DH).
