Beirut...wow

Haven’t heard anything, but I’m hoping that of all the causes it could be that it’s just another Texas City with a shipment of fertilizer.

Of all the horrible scenarios that could have caused something like that, that’d be the best one.

To all the people saying this isn’t wow related so you don’t care…where were you on the multiple topics over the last 2 months that had absolutely nothing to do with wow?

I shouldn’t really be surprised considering how this forum has acted the past few months with stuff going on in America but wow this comment is trash.

Aviela speaks true.

Not surprised with the destabilization that went on there.
Sad what is going on there.

It is off topic but at this point it all is a swamp of threads so whatever I guess.

Here’s one of the top comments from reddit, I’ve heard this stated in multiple places that it was caused by nitrate that was confiscated and was supposed to have been disposed of.

Lebanese here. Last report: the explosion in the port of beirut. There was a lot of nitrate ammunium and chemicals in one of the biggest buildings of the port. The chemicals were there for years found in an abandoned ship in the sea next to the port. 6months ago the government checked it again, experts said they should get rid of it as soon as possible, they reported that many people will die and beirut city will be destroyed if not taken care of. The government didn’t listen, this is the result.

Edit : the air is poisonous, people are asked to stay home and close windows and wash themselves if they were outside. Problem is most of the windows in building are destroyed. You need to know that the port is located at the exact opposit of the airport, which is around 15min drive. And the airport got damaged. So everything in between got hit in some way

Latest update : 7km diameter of direct damage. Buildings windows in that zone shattered in an instant. Hospitals full and no electricity, doctors are doing operations in the streets, people are fighting for survival. Port completely destroyed. FYI, lebanon does alot of import, specially now with economy crisis and medical shortage. We were expecting food and medical supplies by port this week. That won’t be happening

Latest update : firemen still working but almost there. Hospitals full but manageable. Ambulances everywhere, the city sounds crying… Tomorrow we will realise how much we lost and really see what happened Number of death and injuries aren’t officially done, they say 63 deaths and more than 3000 injured

Thank you everyone for you comments and support! It’s wonderful to see strangers being kind and generous. Gives hope in this crazy world and that’s what makes us special!

Much love from Lebanon and if you want help you can donate at the Lebanese Red Cross app. They have their own app

Not surprising and more or less I suspected the incompetent government was mostly to blame.

The Lebanese government can barely handle getting rid of the Beirut’s trash or keep electricity rolling without outages thoroughout the day. Its sad because Beirut is such a beautiful place. Even more infuriating that dozens of people had to lose their life because of it.

That didn’t look like a chemical explosion

It’s sad, as Beruit used to be called the “Paris of the Middle east” back in the 30s and 40s.

Same thing happened to comp stomp

I heard a snippet about a bomb on the radio but haven’t heard anything since.

Edit: just looked it up, the PM is saying that it was a warehouse full of fertilizer that went up accidentally.

I just watched a compilation of different angles, that white plum dome was crazy.

I’d prefer donating if you can. Prayer is nice and all but it’s just words.

Sadly, this isn’t the first time something like this happened.

In 1947, a cargo ship carrying fertilizer exploded in Galveston Bay and set off a chain reaction on other ships also carrying explosive materials, and it leveled the entire city of Texas City, Texas. The death toll in the hundreds and thousands were left with nothing.

You’d think that people would learn from that grisly example and not to store large amounts of ammonium nitrate in close quarters.

Oklahoma city bombing damaged over 324 buildings with 2.5 tons of ammonium nitrate and some rocket fuel. Lebanese PM is saying there was over 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored improperly in that warehouse with other other explosive material

So the magnitude of that explosion seems entirely plausible.

Yep, that’s going to fix everything.

Of course. I’m not WRITING it off. I just was a little took by surprise when I saw that wave hit the camera that was filming that resembles an actual attack of some sort. I’ve never seen a self-explosion of any kind create that.

I … don’t actually know enough curse words to properly express myself here. And I was raised by a retired Senior Master Sergeant. S**t like that constitutes an explosion hazard merely by existing.

Donate, folks. Those people need help.

Prone to terrorist attacks and refugees?

If you care about this, please don’t trivialize the gravity of it by making it a GD post. There are plenty of international relief efforts online where you could make a difference.
