Being priced out of wow for the time being

They’re still crap, it’s what would stop me from ever buying another AMD card

My current one crashes every other set of drivers.

Would play an 8bit WoW.

From the Everquest days up until about 2010 (showing my age here ) I had three different models of Radeon cards literally burn up. Literally fry. Ever since Ive had nothing but the smoothest of sailing with Nvidia. They cost more but you get what you pay for.

Yeah I had the same issues, although that was back when those cards were ATI instead of AMD. Had 2 ATI cards completely destroy themselves, bought a BFG 8800gt and have been with Nvidia ever since.

Yeah mine were an ATI Radeon 9600xt, a 9800xt, and AMD RX 480 and then a 580 in the ex’s computer.

Never had an Nvidia product fail on me. Never had a radeon NOT fail on me.

Cryptocurrency mining boomlet + pandemic tax + capitalism = price gouging the suckers while the gouging is good

I ordered a RTX 3080 30 seconds after they launched and the queue to receive it was ten weeks. I eventually got it and I must say the wait was worth it, they are insane in 4K. Got it for $1250 AUD which was nice too.

I just bougth a new laptop. I wanted to buy a ryzen 5 with a 1660. Guess what? There wasnt any at a proce that is reasoble to ne, so I bougth s laptop.

Its good but not desktop pc levels of good lol

Yeah, ok dude. I read this earlier, rolled my eyes and moved on - been dealing with this kind of ignorance for many years, nothing new. I know you can’t convince these clowns. They used to even claim 30 fps was good enough. “The eye can’t perceive over 30 fps!”

But just now I was playing and I was like, wtf, why is my framerate so low? Pressed CTRL+R to view the frame rate, and I had dropped… to 120 fps. From the usual 140 cap.

That’s ok though, if you’re happy being all smug there, you can save yourself some money at least. No need for 144 hz monitors, adaptive sync, and expensive video cards if you’re happy with 60 or less!

Want to know why those products and technologies exist though? Yeah.

I used to think that as well, and I frankly feel like I cannot see a difference past 60 FPS myself when I am looking at higher end hardware, but research is starting to suggest otherwise.

If anything, I think it’s more of an issue with the limits of a monitor. I simply set my cap in WoW to 60 FPS. No sense in letting my video card work overtime to show frames that my monitor itself cannot show.

Are they inventing Doctor Who’s “bigger on the inside” technology by 2025? Because if not, what you’re saying is impossible.

Your line of thought is similar to the people who thought smaller computers could never be more powerful than the Room sized monstrosities of the early 1970s. Yet, laptops of today are tens of thousands of times more powerful than those Room sized monstrosities.

You can only keep your desktop so cool, eventually, no matter how big your cooling system, there is a ceiling. Meanwhile, Miniaturization is continually making smaller and more powerful cooling systems.

Oh c’mon, you could clock everything to max when we were back using 8XX series cards and before, WoW hasn’t been hostage to our GPUs for like 10 years now (if ever, it ran like butter on release day). The OP’s bigger problem will be matching his mobo to any older card he buys, not WoW itself.

You’ll get more performance by upgrading your CPU. WoW isn’t GPU optimized, yes a 3070 will hulk smash any graphical settings but up until i built a new system I was running a GTX 970 OC and a damn Phenom 965 black edition, a 10 year old CPU. Running a Ryzen 5600X now and I can guarantee that if your CPU is a heap of dung and your mobo is compatible, spend the 400 or so bucks on a modern CPU and you won’t need to spend double on a GPU until supply catches up. New CPUs can absolutely handle any graphics information that WoW sends. Just don’t expect 200 fps on your 75hz monitor (hint, if you dont have a high refresh rate monitor any FPS over that refresh rate can’t be written to the screen).

This I will never understand . teh only important thing is how teh game plays --it could be just stick figures for all I care if the gameplay is spot on.

Some of teh best games ever made are for teh C64 , quite a few are still far better to play then 90% of teh rubbish they call games today

Things I will never understand: people still using “teh” like they assume it’s gamer speak. Type properly.

That’s a total lie…

I had a 10 year old computer: AMD 6300 processor, 16 RAM (DDR3), and an R9 series Radeon graphics card. I was able to play on very low graphics settings. The graphics card was the bottle neck. That card doesn’t even meet the minimum requirements for Shadowlands. Anytime I tried to PvP or do a raid my FPS would drop to 20 (sometimes 15). In all other areas of the game my FPS hovered around 80 to 100 FPS.

I wanted to hold out on buying a new computer until games like Ashes of Creation came out so I went shopping for a graphics card upgrade. I was shocked at how high the prices were. Why pay $350+ for an average graphics card upgrade when I can buy a new computer for about $790 on Amazon that will last me 4+ years with the same card inside? It’s a Ryzen 3600 CPU with 6 cores and a Radeon RX 5500 XT graphics card.

Sure, it’s not the most modern computer but that’s not what I wanted to spend my money on right now. I’m waiting for those “other games” too come out before forking over the big bucks. I figure those games won’t be fully released for at least 1 year (most likely 2). And I can get by on minimum requirements for a bit until upgrading to the computer I really want. By then the crypto craze will be over.

To everyone saying that you can play WoW on a potato and just turn down the settings, first, I suspect you’re the same people who respond to anyone’s concern with “git gud”, not shocking there. Second, go get your old laptop with integrated graphics from your closet or basement, turn the game on 1 and see if you’d like to play WoW like that. It’s a disgusting, terrible experience, getting like 30-50fps on settings 1 or 2. It looks like 1997. Give the guy a break.

Friendly reminder to take apart your 1070 and check the thermal paste, the thermal on my 1070 went bad about a month ago and after a bit of new thermal and a few thermal pads replaced at a total cost of about 30 CAD my 1070 runs like new.

WoW still runs like a 15 year old game but at least it works.

Some people type fast, some people have visual processing disorders, and I assume none of them care about your sensibilities.
