Technically the lifeblood of the Shadowlands is anima, not souls. Anima being more a… substance that a soul acquires over their lifetime, the more “experienced” a soul is the more anima is gains, and that is what the Covenants are focused on extracting. Once the anima is gone though the soul is still there and is still unharmed, at least if the method of extraction wasn’t intended to be damaging. And that soul still goes on and persists, at least for a time.

The Soul can also replenish it’s Anima if it isn’t completely drained.

What does the Soul contain aside from Anima/Death? Sin and Spirit/Life!

Sin-touched Souls that have some remnant of Anima tossed into the Maw have the Stygia(Sin-touched Spirit) beaten out of them leaving only the Sin-touched Anima!

Souls without Sin that have the Soul Ash(Stygia that isn’t Sin-Touched) beaten out of them leave behind only Phantasma(extinguished Anima)!
