Hmm. I feel like I have heard this whole “civilized” thing before.
Oh…Kind of knocks that theory out of the water 
Just to put some of this into perspective (hense the topic):
Children were being stolen from their native families, from camps/reservations. They were forced to take an english name and were forced to give up their native tongue. If they were ever caught trying to speak it, they were severely beaten for it. They were also forced into American schools, where the state removed any link to their heritage. Even blood. This is just a small part of society “forcing” them to be “civilized”. Adapt or die, isn’t really accepting different cultures. That’s absorbing it.
And because of all of this, for going on for so long- Cherokee language is considered a dead language and lost. Aka absorbing Cherokee culture, was successful.
