“ever-advancing force that pushes back consistently.”
Problem is that defines a Death Knight.
The bigger problem is the blurred lines between what a Paladin, Death Knight, and Warrior are.
Death Knight took our niche of the big juggernaut that cannot be slowed, and Blizzard doesn’t want us with actual mobility (unlike the original design philosophy of the Paladin, one of the classes with the fastest baseline movement speed, with Pursuit of Justice)

It’s not our fault that they took a class introduced years after the paladin and tried to make them something they aren’t supposed to be in the DK. Arguably DK is just the dark version of a paladin in terms of lore, so it doesn’t really break anything if they are both ever-advancing forces.

I’m not talking about anyone’s fault but Blizzard’s.
However right you are about the lore of the Death Knight, from a gameplay viewpoint, there is something horrendously wrong with one class taking and fulfilling another’s niche better than they can. Blizzard just really doesn’t know what they want Paladin to look like, as their DF description of them is incredibly incongruous with the 18-year history of the Paladin.

if i remember right they tried that but it failed since it ended up eating 2 GCDs.
This is gonna be awful in pvp though with all the mobility melee already have.
I dont know if you mentioned this but lady liadrin has a similar ability if you fight her in arathi warfront

I disagree with your first point. The functionality is completely different from Heroic Leap. Avenging Leap is only targetable to an enemy or an ally, no free placement casting. But being able to use this to an ally is what ultimately gives it the most separation. Plus, if this is your point, what exactly do you make of Vengeance Demon Hunter’s Infernal Strike? Why is this ability not just copy/pasted Heroic Leap?
Your second point is fair and could end up breaking some of the major appeal for the design of Avenging Leap in the first place. Still could be something here to the idea overall, but Avenging Leap would need to be the definitive Paladin mobility option (Divine Steed fully replaced) for this to be the case.
If you do not feel this is what our forte should be as a Paladin, what do you make of Blizzard showcasing Liadrin in the Hearthstone cinematic performing this identical ability? She literally leaps and attacks Arthas.
I do agree with you that a Death Knight is the dark version of a paladin essentially in terms of the lore. But by this logic, why can Death Knights have an instant gap closer but not Paladins? If it doesn’t really break anything that both classes are ever-advancing forces, it doesn’t really break anything for both to have equal options for mobility.
Ngl as a prot paladin leaping across the room into a corwd of enemies consencrating the ground beneath me sounds badass

When I created this thread for Avenging Leap it was based out of my experience playing Ret and Holy in PvP. Being able to instantly close gaps as Ret would be a breath of fresh air for our gameplay and also being able to instantly reach your allies as Holy to gain the max benefit of our mastery would help lock in the idea of a battle healer. Of course there also are the benefits of leaping to allies as ret and leaping to enemies as holy but those are the secondary gameplay perks of Avenging Leap.
Only recently this week have I picked up Prot and am attempting to learn the raid. I’m interested in the normal difficulty yellow coloration set for Paladin this season. I feel my chances of getting into the raid are highest as Prot and I have always enjoyed tanking in raids. Only now am I also starting to realize how great it would feel as Prot to leap to a pack of enemies or the boss and drop a consecration. This would help consistently provide the consecration buff effects for our abilities without having to manually burn a global to drop consecration from time to time.
I’m glad you like the ability design, and it does sound badass to me as well!
Bumping this in light of the recent announcement for a Retribution rework for patch 10.0.7.
Calling on all Paladins!
This is our best chance to finally get a LEAP.
This again? Just play warrior.
i dont think thats a good response. “just play the class with infinitely better mobility, survivability and damage!” is not the solution to rets problems lol.
not sure what will come from the rework, but more mobility is definitely needed. Some way of getting targets to stay in place (like lightning lasso) or get to you (death grip) or you to them (leap/short cd sprint) really feels necessary. Im sure they can get creative with it and make it different than death grip/heroic leap/lasso.

Cloning warrior abilities isn’t a solution either, I’m sure they’re considering options though but I don’t think just cloning other classes is the way to go.
I agree, remove Shield Charge from Prot Warriors and give it to Paladins.
Diablo2 Paladin had it first.
Can you imagine the tantrum Ret’s will throw if they are finally given a charge, but need to weapon swap to a shield first to use it, and then back to a 2-handed weapon to attack.
Almost worth it just to see the meltdowns.
Although, i suppose in a sense it would not be that different Turalyon’s Might. Which did require several GCD’s to achieve what was essentially just a charge. And i’ve seen many people asking for that to come back.
Considering they based the Legion rework off Diablo3 I think it’s fair to say Diablo should have nothing to do with Wow.
Wouldn’t have to, can just give Ret a “Holy Shield” for the duration/animation.
There’s a lot of OW, Diablo, HotS, etc… influence on WoW. Can’t just pick and choose whenever the argument doesn’t serve you.
Doesn’t that also work the other way around? lol. That seems a bit arbitrary.
I’d honestly prefer if they do the Tyrael Eldruin’s might from Hots and remove the gcd from the second part of the spell if that’s a problem.
I would downvote if it were an option. I want Steed improved to have Freedom included in the tool tip. Steed has so much utility for running around pillars etc in Arenas. For those who don’t like the horse, by all means get them a glyph to change it to a beam of light behind them or whatever, but Steed if improved to have Blessing of Freedom on it is all we need.

Well the skill and animations have been Ingame since Legion really, you’re basically asking for the version that in halls of Valor the lead Valkyrie uses before Hyrja, she gets wings and leaps to range dps or healers.
So it’s not really hard to imagine being added, but the issue is a lot of mechanics really utilise Divine Steed, look at the first boss in RLP, you need to run that ice vortex out, without divine steed it’s going to be insanely more difficult especially on Tyrannical weeks.
And huge stress on the healers aswell.
