I’m leveling my first alt a paladin tank and plan to get them up into 15s no real desire to go higher. So far my highest key tanked was +11 as a bear.
My decision between venthyr and kyrian comes down to will I need to kite as a pally at +15 because if so I’ll take kyrian but if I can stand and face tank I’ll go venthyr for ashen hollow.
Any input is appreciated, general or pally specific.
When the incoming damage is more than your defensive cooldowns can mitigate, and the healer is running out of mana or struggling to keep you up.
It is a moving target. Early on, a 5 might feel hard, then 8, then 10, 12, 15. I’ve found that 10+ you need to start thinking about it at times, 12+ certain packs start to really hurt. That is at about 210ilvl.
Then add in the random M+ affix of the week, and it can really shuffle things around.
There is no magic number. As you tank, you will start to know which packs do too much damage and which packs do not. You will start to realize when you are taking too much damage and the healer is struggling.
You kite when you need to and that depends on you gear level, your group composition and skill, the affixes…
I am currently pushing 18s and for most pulls I do not need to kite. Some pulls require me to disengage, but that is separate from kiting. Of course there are some pulls that do need it at any key level.
If your goal is myhics, I highly recommend Kyrian with First Avenger talent.
A lot of it comes down to cool down management and group utilities. If the group doesnt help interrupt, stun, or use utilities you will have to move around more. However, managing personal defensives is the biggest thing.
200 is on gear level for 10s. If op was pushing keys above their ilvl then yes kiting will need to happen, but 200 at 10+ sounds right on track. Now if op was pushing 12s at 200 then that would be a different story.
For pugging and learning the pulls, I would also recommend taking the Final Stand talent. It is a great emergency button and lets you hold agro. Sometimes I will intentionally pull big and just stand there with the bubble so they stay grouped up while dps cleaves.
Don’t be giving them ideas, the minute they introduce a mechanic that requires a specific thing to be performed you are going to have one class excel and the rest just fail. Which is what happened in SL, you must kite and much more than any other expansion which put DH’s at the top and some tanks not even getting a chance.
I only pug, so my spine feels normal to me /shrug. 200 is on par for 10s.
If healer is going oom in between pride pulls then either dps is not strong enough, utilities are not being used, or avoidable damage is not being avoided.
