Doubt it. I think the genre just dying off will be the big WoW killer. When I started mmorpgs in 1999, it was because there was an amazing sense of wonder being in a persistent online world. That was carried over for a few years into WoW.

Now online games are very common and the magic is gone. So to keep the genre going, they have to do things like feed stat and power addiction to keep people playing these types of games. It feels more like an online casino now. Its like a digital drug.

Couple that with the cost of making these types of games, and really I see that being the death blow eventually. A pure MMO is probably not possible anymore as people will farm out code/stats almost immediately now and it goes from an adventure to a "MAXIMUM efficiency, optimal whatever else, and whatever other term you nerds use.

And… everyone thought Rift is going to be a WoW killer and its advertised to be but look at it now.

Even if an MMO is highly anticipated, in all reality people will return to the status quo that is WoW, FF or ESO in time just because they are backed by a known franchise or a known studio/company, its kinda how the MMO landscape works they either still breathing or they faded into obscurity.

Unlike Rift and other MMOs, World of Warcraft just simply exists, most people return to the game with almost every expansion or even still play the game even if the expansion is mediocre and even if a highly anticipated MMO comes out, WoW will still survive.

you could invent a soda thats much better thank coke, but ppl will still flock to the coke.

i’d like to see another good mmo do well though, competition is good.

I think the visuals/combat looks really clunky which is always one of the number one reason these new MMOs suck.

But on top of that they’re being super ambitious with all these over promising systems. That’s like my biggest red flag. Reminds me of No Man’s Sky. Innovation is cool and all but if you aren’t focused you most likely won’t deliver.

Thanks OP. For a second there, I thought it was 2010.

I got day 1 copies for Rift, Wildstar, GW2, FF14 (before ARR) and even checked out LOTRO. For 2.

Nowadays when my wife gets excited about a new MMO I just ask her to wait. She usually gets sucked into one of a million books in her backlog and I save myself that money and time.

The real WoW killer will be Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen it ever comes out. That game will show the genre a future free of the tyranny of the WoW-style MMORPGs.

You know what will be a wow killer? An MMO called wow killer.

I’d play that.

Just check it out and it looks good, I may very well have found a new home after 12 years Blizzard can go get knotted.

Wow has reigned supreme in the mmorpg world for years, every game that people thought certain to bring it down failed. i highly doubt that this one will be any different.

I mean the guy who is directing it is privately funding it and was rich enough to retire at 28, I think his dad owns an entire college or something.

I don’t think they have to worry about $.

I thought the same until I did research on the game and who was in charge of it.

It’s definitely going to be a big game and big competition to WoW, but that’s healthy for WoW. Gives WoW devs ideas and motivation.

AOC looks boring.
2nd - don’t feed the trolls (Vanillanoob just trolls on everything, OR he’s just so unhappy that he attacks WOW 24/7)

I think they’ve done VERY WELL indeed with Shadowlands.
ANd they’re alive and well, and Shadowlands pre-orders has already broken all previous records for purchases.

So much for “killing themselves off”

The game will not be for everyone even if it lives up to its claims. I think it looks promising but like so many before me have said it is very likely overreaching which does not usually end well. I wish it the best though and am also excited about the New Genesis PSO2 expansion they announced seeing as it is a complete game overhaul. Time will tell which games will give WoW some trouble.

Biggest blows to wow is wow.
