Alt army once alts are made impossible to play I am done with the game. Also, I always change mains every expansion and sometimes during patches.
I have a main, this character. I have many alts that I use to support this character. I don’t force emissaries, essences, or artifacts on my alts. They will probably not grow beyond whatever catchup gear is available cheaply but that is okay. That is sufficient for my purposes. They won’t be used for mythic+ or raids. That doesn’t support my main.

Eh, I don’t try and have my alts keep up with my main.

I’m an alt guy. I started WoW with 2 characters, and within a month had 5 – I still play those 5 today 15 years later, plus many others.
Before I started WoW, I played another MMO (DAOC) for 3 years every day, I started THAT game with 2 characters: twin gnomes, one a rogue, one an archer.
I play 1 character to unlock a pathfinder or an AR. You have to do a questline and/or a reputation on 1 character, so I do. I’ve spent 2 weeks doing quests on my hunter. And I enjoyed that.
But I enjoy playing all the classes, not just the hunter.

I just have 4 mains. I couldn’t even come close to picking only one to play. I enjoy them all. The 4 keep me fairly busy, so I really doubt that I will add any more any time soon.
My druid is and always has been my main and the one character I’ll never stop playing. However, i also have an army of lower level alts that i -want- to play but never seem to do much on because i keep going back to my druid. Those include a pandaren monk, nelf mage, nelf priest, nelf demon hunter, worgen deathknight, and soon™ a dark iron shaman.
I play whatever I’m in the mood for, tbh. That just happens to have been a monk since WoD.
I get that I main this, but if someone I cared about hypothetically told me that I needed to swap tomorrow with zero negotiations, then I’d pick paladin or priest.
The most I ever did (while raiding) was have a paladin for CM carries. I think I geared up my hunter for funsies and I brought my priest to drunk alt runs, but it’s way too much to focus on if I’m not going to be playing it as much as my main. Just my 2c.
Kudos to people who can do that, I cannot.
One class, one spec. Tried others, none took.

One main but always play all the classes. It help to spread around the professions too. Current expansion is my Druid main, 3 others 400 ilevel or greater, 5 other 120’s, and 3 up and coming. Had to make void elf, kul tiran, and dark iron. Variety is nice but there will always be just one main.
I used to have an alt army I kept up with decently. Then 8.2 dropped and now I only have about two that I keep up with in anyway and my main is 15 ilevels higher than the one I only play very occasionally.
I’ve always liked having alts, but the last few expansions have felt really alt unfriendly. Too much work and I’m not talking about ilvl.
I’m a “main until it plateaus” then off to an alt.
For example, Piddy here “peaked” and essentially had little to do until 8.2, so off I went and leveled my Horde DK. He’s 120, reasonably geared, finished the War Campaign. But then 8.2 hit, so back to Piddy.
It was nice this time with the different story lines for Alliance and Horde.
I have 2 other 110’s in the wings waiting to come up.
At this juncture, there’s no reason to go back to them until I at least get flying, but I haven’t had the time to get that yet. Still working on it.
I barely have time keep up with just my main, so basically i just main.
Alt army. I got 1 or 2 that are my main focus. But still have an army behind them.
I have 15 characters but only play two of them. Only two I have up to current content. I play a Warlock and a Shadow priest.
If it was possible to play an alt this tier without having to put an hour into it everyday for 3 weeks I would be an alt person.
Oh well maybe the next expansion will be alt friendly. Doubt it.

I’m a collector. I collect mounts and pets so my alts are also like a collection.
I’ve always had a “main,” but I have an alt army.
I like variety, trying different classes out, etc. I’d get bored if I was limited to one character.
Been playing this character since launch. Only had a DK alt most of the time who I didn’t play a whole lot. Then legion launch event happened and I ended up with one of each class. I really just use them to abuse mount lockouts.
