Are we gonna start ID carding? New Florida Law

SCOTUS will shoot this down in a few months.

Clear government overreach.

i feel afraid that this will be a nationwide thing or that this will creep into more states

for reasons

That is true, but there is still a difference between LE having to do the work to prove your identity with devices and IPs vs. already having your identity verified for them by the social media company

It’s been a while since I took internet law, but from what I remember, LE can subpoena some types of account information (name, email, and billing info on the account), with a standard of ‘relevant to an ongoing investigation’.

If they want more info than that, there’s a higher standard, and (in the case of a defamation suit), if the judge decides the case has merits, they can also subpoena the same info to enable the defendant to get served.

That’s were the catch comes in becuase before if someone really wanted to stay anonymous they could have lied about all of that and made up fake accounts…

But if social media companies are required to see your ID to verify your age, that will no longer work. Even if they did let you keep using that account they would likely record your real identity to cover themselves

Assuming you don’t use a fake ID.

In the case of WoW, what would really give it away is the billing info, as that would enable LE to follow the money.

I don’t want to go down the political rabbit hole but… it IS Florida.

Well this is a non issue for me being 2000 years old, but I would think if you can thumbprint unlock your phone and have facial recognition, they could make something age sensitive, It merely hasn’t happened yet. There is something to think about if net security programs are your bread and butter.
Maybe retinas mature when they age , or you could scan tooth enamel or something.
Maybe a questionaire " do you know who Bob Denver is?" or something

Uh oh, Florida man might have to submit ID to play Florida Man Simulator Online next year:

That is the best alternate title I’ve ever seen for GTA.

It does though. Still, it’s irrelevant in this case as WoW isn’t social media.

You do know the difference between Social Media and a game/gaming forum?

It doesn’t, but either way, you are correct that WoW is not a social media platform.

I dig it. I tend to avoid Social Media like the plague anyways, but I have seen a lot of cases in my field of work where younger children are far too laser focused on it. This I think is a good thing and will give them time to mentally mature. I mean really, 15 is the absolute lowest I would go to be frank.

I would say this forum might count as social media. I use it like other people use Facebook lol. Except this is way more fun for me because it’s always talking about a game I like with people who get it.

At the same time, awesome, go Florida. Kids don’t need social media. I think they will be happier with themselves and their lives without it, and everyone deserves a happy childhood. I might be old school but I think it’s healthy for a kid to be spending their time with family and real friends in real life.

No one does lol.

Social media rots your brain.

Hmm… why is it Florida keeps having all the crazy stuff happening? Hopefully that carding thing doesn’t come over the other side of the US. I mean I get it…it’s to stop kids from getting on social media but doesn’t it kinda violate some rights in the process? I mean it might cause identity theft rate to increase in Florida. Only bright side I see to it is it may cut down on the amount of children playing WoW but… I’m not sure that’s a big deal at the moment. Just don’t give your kids phones till they’re old enough to pay their own phone bill and you won’t need to worry about them being on social media… rather simple

Good thing about climate change? Florida will be underwater once the ice caps melt.

It’s not that big of a deal if it only affects social media access…it really depends on the finer details.

I don’t live in Florida.
