It’s not recontextualized though. It’s been established since BC and earlier that the Light is ambivalent in regards to who it lends its power to.
Like…that’s established. They’re just trying exploring the different avenues of that idea. Story growth is kind of a normal thing.
Balnazzar infiltrated it to corrupt it - and very quickly figured out he didn’t have a lotta work to do. They were already beyond radical and overzealous - he would just occasionally point them in a direction and they’d fling themselves to their deaths willingly. Or slaughter innocents without question - but they were already doing those things before he came. He just found a way to make them make fatal mistakes more consistently.
