As a person who played for a good chunk of BFA, this event has little to offer me that matters. The transmogs are ugly (although I admit, the FOMO of losing out on the sets compelled me to collect them none the less), the gear is weaker than what I already have, and while the pet will likely gain in value over time, based on the legion release pet…that’s gonna be a while.
The bag’s about the only thing of immediate, practical value to me, or anyone who has kept current with the game. So we don’t get to feel the gradual progress a returning player does of getting stuff from the other rares boosting our strength or unlocking xmogs from the old dungeons. All we’ve got is grinding for the bag.
So that’s what we focus on, and then we realize how the design for its acquisition makes no dang sense, but is perfectly in line with the way Blizzard is handling the game as a whole.
Consider the drop rate. The drop rate tells you a lot about how easy Blizzard wants it to be for you to acquire the item. If they want it to be really rare and require a lot of dedication, then you make the drop rate absurdly low (like the 1% chance on raid mounts). If you want everyone to get it as long as they try even a little, you make the drop rate 100%, or reward it from a quest.
But a drop rate of 20%? That tells me that Blizzard doesn’t want the bag to be free, but want you to get it if you put in some work. Which is perfectly fine; a good event should have a mix of rewards for a range of different efforts. Totally fine.
But the root problem is that Blizzard is relying way to hard on drop rates and rng to implement this. VERY few items in the game are under your control. And unlike a grindable currency, RNG can screw you. It’s possible, though unlikely, that you could try for the bag a decent number of times (10+) and not get the bag, while some other guy can get three on his first four kills. It doesn’t feel rewarding, or fair, ESPECIALYL when, unlike raid mounts, you can’t try for years to get it; you only get two weeks.
If they just put the bag on the vendor for a large number of commendations (Say, 100), then it would still require effort, but you couldn’t get screwed in a temporary event. Which is where the frustration lies.
