Cata wasn’t too bad the start sucked a bit with its massive difficulty spike coming out of WoTLK which had you trained doing massive AoE’s and stuff. The sudden polar shift was jarring. Although it too was a bit lacking in new. It had a lot of rehash.
WoD and BFA though both pretty meh. I liked the first half of BFA but started hating it later.
Personally, I enjoyed Cata. The player base as a whole did not and a great many people left. Having said that, I feel that many were going to leave as they felt the real game story was done once Arthas was taken out.
A lot of big changes happened in Cata that could of changed it. The talent system went byebye that sucked, there was a pruning that sucked, there was a massive shift in difficulty which was okay but a lot of people thought it sucked. And then all the rehash people just wanst interested in doing all paired with kind of a weak story. People hated Garrosh because Blizzard could never decide what they wanted him to be.
All that is true. All of those are reasons that drove people away. I still enjoyed it, but I definitely understand and admit that many players did not.
Didn’t they changed the weekly chest to weekly great vault were you can get multiple items or something. it’s less likely of you to get the same thing 12 weeks in a row…Since it’s more to it. Or something like that…I just know it a tad different from the weekly chest. 
Basically you can get 3 things from raids, pvp, and mythic plus. So that’s a totally of what 9 pieces of gear from it.

They brought back gear vendors so that you don’t have to raid or die.

I just don’t see how it’s more than bc or wrath. More or all physical copies were sold then so maybe they are counting digital only. There was tenfold the amount of players back then.

no white knighting is being done. bfa was genuinly almost a good expansion, however they messed it up in a few key areas. shadowlands looks much better though they took all the good things about bfa and improved on them while adding a few new things which we will just have to see how those go really
BFA was trash from start to finish.

You get to choose 1 of potentially 9 options. Really depends on a lot on what are really options though. If you cleared the raid on heroic, conquest capped but only have a 1.2k rating, and did 1 14, do you really have 7 choices or 1?
This is a flat out lie. Without level 50 gear you don’t have the HP necessary to defend against players in raid gear, heck even in lfr quality gear you don’t stand a chance and would get killed in 2 hits. Stop lying.

Also, BFA was terrible as soon a they mentioned it was pirate themed. Legion was miles better because of story, gearing, questing, better zones and tier gear existed.

As poorly designed as systemlands base is built upon it is still an upgrade over BFA. Truth 100%.
If you are looking for the stellar class design from Expansions past(Wrath to MoP). Don’t play Shadowlands
If you are looking for a repeated clone of BFA with more prolonged and pointless borrowed power systems. Play Shadowlands
The people who truly cared about this game quit long ago. I feel sorry for those of you that cling to this game every expansion in hope that it gets better
People got interested when they heard “delayed for quality”
Also people like to mock it by calling it “systemlands” but the systems are 200% better than BFA’s convoluted mess of systems right now. They’re nowhere near as bad. And the endgame systems give you things to do every week beyond raid or die.
Highest pre-sales due to the hype yes now how it pans out over time and is able to retain the sub numbers that’s different. I remember WOD had a big pre-sale hit then later on the numbers dropped so much blizz rushed to replace it with legion given the selfie cam agenda ticked off many as it was considered content.
