I thought what I saw was fine. As many said less layers than higher pop servers but still more characters on the server than 2005 vintage Wow.
Seems odd to do this. Not like Deviate Delight back in the day nor even the Jom consolidation in SoM. There’s way more players on CB than either DD or Jom at the point when their squish happened.

I’m a Chaos Bolt’er. I don’t want to go. But if they outright shut down CB I’m either going there or quitting.
Looks like we have to bite the bullet, but we can’t even do that due to Blizz’s incompetence.

I disagree… and rerolling was a valid option at 25 and its still a valid option at 40… albeit a bit of a longer grind at 40.
With the boosts to XP and gold gained right now… not even mentioning the sleeping bag and rested food… a character can legitimately level to 25 in a few hours. Doing quests, BFD, and the PvP events… a character can hit 40 in a few days. Might be doable for a player between now and Phase 3 next week.
As far as your “time invested,” I would say this is just personal opinion. After all, none of the gear obtained up to this point is really, truly going to matter after next week… there is no huge vault of toys, gimmicks, materials, or gear that is going to matter after next week… and if the OP is a casual player, I doubt that they have a significant stockpile of gold saved up.
But, its your opinion that you are just “writing off” Gnomer patterns and BIS gear… again, I doubt you’ll ever use those patterns or that gear ever again after next week. I might agree with you if SOD was at max level, and we were raiding the end-game… then I would almost most certainly agree with your sentiment. Unfortunately, at this point in the game, it is not entirely unpleasant to reroll.
Playing during peak is great. And weekends are awesome. But outside those hours, especailly now since the mass exodus happened, its really crap to find a group. I spent 3 hours last night looking for a tank for Gnomergan (since our guild is now split between two servers, all tanks made it off before the close hahahaha) and could not find one…if it didnt suck before, it most def. Does now.
Most of the gear WILL matter next phase…what are you even talking about? So much of my BFD gear/crafted epics were considered Pre-BiS going into Gnomer. The pearl trinkets are still BiS for alot of classes. You think that the trinkets, weapons like ACP, the epic necks from Thermaplugg, etc aren’t going to carry most people straight into Sunken Temple?

I think you are taking this to the extreme… so I’ll explain it slightly differently.
The OP said he is a “casual player.” In my mind, that means that he may or may not have all BiS gear, or any BiS gear. Now, I agree that much of the BFD gear was BiS pre-Gnomer… but now that Gnomer is largely on farm, not much of the BFD gear remains BiS. To reiterate so you understand… I am not saying NONE of the gear matters, but most of the gear will not matter.
For a casual player, there are plenty, plenty, of options for gear outside of BFD and they will still remain competitive for dungeons/raids.
Moreover, ‘most’ of what is the BiS gear now will likely not remain BiS at 50 - this was true for Gnomer. There is a decent gap in gear stats between 40 and 50.
Lastly, if the OP is now complaining about “dead servers” but also admits to playing during ‘non-peak’ hours… what’s to say that even if rerolls or transfers that he won’t have the same exact problem in the new server?
