Another problem with Lightforged warlocks

Not a single person is hating on Xe’ra. Everyone here except you agree that she crossed the line and paid for it.

The double standards and derogatory name-calling like “chandelier” or “wind chime” says otherwise. I haven’t seen that name-calling for Gul’dan, Sargeras, N’Zoth or Azshara. Or when I’ve called Illidan names like “Illidork”, “Illidunce”, “Edgydork” and “fel junkie”.

Nobody pretends or argues that the Gul’dan, the Burning Legion, Azshara, etc. are good people, though. I don’t see the double standard that you claim exists.

I don’t see them getting called derogatory names despite being far worse people. But the real double standard is when compared to Illidan, Sylvanas and our PCs.

People tend to name-call characters when they’re acting stupid, not because they’re evil. Xe’ra was an incredibly obnoxious character for the short time we saw her and gets almost no respect because of it.

The same could be said of Gallywix, Fandral, Me’dan and Aggra, and I don’t see them getting called names or demonized to such a degree that the mere mention of them gets such outbursts.

I wonder if there’ll be more introspection from the Lightforged during this quest.

And thats what makes this new cosmic force lore so bland and boring. Every one of them wants the same thing and barely feels like the force they’re meant to represent.

WoW’s cosmic lore is between a rock and a hard place. The edgelord route that the nasty old guard like Afrasiabi wanted to do, or the bland, repetitive relativist lore we’re seeing now.

I don’t mean in-universe stupid, as in their writing comes off stupid.

Having said that, Me’dan himself is basically a dirty word with how badly he was received and transcended insults into becoming one. Zovaal was known almost entirely by people talking about his nipples. Varian used to be called King Chin. Saurfang was most often known as Sadfang. I’ve seen Baine referred to as Sitting Bull a few times. I’m sure Garrosh had some nicknames but can’t recall any right now. People derides Sylvanas for being a goth queen, etc.

There’s no reason to be this sensitive over Xe’ra.

That’s a fair point about the other characters.

That said, Xe’ra’s writing comes off as stupid.

I think for all her character flaws she had potential which deserved better than to be squandered as an edgelord’s jobber and punching bag.

I’ve also seen fans give Xe’ra the “Ron the Death Eater” treatment - when fans shoehorn a good canon character into being a villain or make a villain significantly more evil than in canon. And pointing out those inaccuracies has gotten me quite a bit of verbal abuse, motivating me to stand my ground more, you understand?

You really haven’t been paying attention. We give derogatory nicknames to characters all the time. And I mean all the time. Me’dan is an exception because he was so bad that his name alone is an insult.

While that’s a fair point, how did Illidan escape such nicknames apart from what I’ve given him?

He didn’t. Back in BC he was called the Edgelord most commonly on my server. He was just overshadowed by Kael’thas’ setbacks.

There are lots of reasons for why lightforged draenei warlocks dont make any sense. But blizz has clearly chosen to be on the side of a grand total of five peoples extra special donut steel OC. It will only get worse from here when things like orc paladins and gnome demon hunters come out.

Well I’m bringing that nickname back lol, it still fits him and in hindsight it always did.

Jokes aside, I got into WoW a bit after BC, so not surprising I missed that.

It’s ironic because I prefer the old lore much more, as it was more freeform, more open to growth, and left room for mystery and the grandeur of the greater universe.

Afrasiabi wanted neither the old or the new. He was just constantly pushing his idiotic ideas into the story (except Stonetalon Garrosh which I’ll always stand by :P) and played a large part in the ruination that was BFA and Shadowlands (even though he left during the latter, I think).

He left because his abuses and the abuses of certain others got too big to ignore. This “bad side of the Light stuff” was likely his brainchild, as if I needed any more reason to despise the man than the other parts of the lore he dragged through the mud and most of all his treatment of certain employees, especially female ones.

I think we agree about the older lore.

It’s so idiotic. I’m fine with the Holy Light being imperfect, like it was in the old lore. Back when the Light was simply a manifestation of good intentions, and the Shadow a manifestation of bad/selfish intentions. Thats why the Scarlet Crusade could still use the Light. They were delusional and insane.

THAT’S how you show the dark side of the Light. You show how good intentions can be morphed into self-righteousness and intolerance. That’s worldbuilding.

You don’t suddenly decide the Light wants to conquer everything and will kill anyone who doesnt do what it says. Why? Well aside from it being brain-dead 1 dimensional, it makes the Light seem like a force of Order doesn’t it? But wait, isn’t that supposed to be Arcane and the Titans?

It’s nonsense. It’s all nonsense. the cosmic force retcon broke WoW’s magic lore. And when you break a fantasy world’s basic magic lore, the rest kinda topples down ontop of it.

I agree with all this. Side note, it really ruins Xe’ra’s threat level if they wanted to bring an AU version back as a villain by having her get killed easily by Illidan.

How would you explain the Naaru with this kind of lore? Or Lightforging? Or would they not be part of it? Same for the Old Gods and the Shadow/Void.

Those are not even that bad. They are just insults based on her appearance in the same vein of calling Nzoth squid boy or various remarks about having tentacles.

Azshara is seen as attractive and described as one of the most beautiful mortals to ever exist. So that is probably why her appearance is not insulted often.

Xera would not be called a “chandelier” if she didn’t look like one. Maybe if Xera was given some rockin’ Jessica Rabbit type model and voice actress…. she might have more fans.

People straight up call her Sylvanus.
