Anduin being meant to show non-toxic masculinity is hollow

Why? Illidan not being perfect is what makes him, him. The only reason in Warcraft 3 he didnt just let the Legion win is because he still cared about Tyrande. Illidan trying to win Tyrande over even thought she has made up her mind makes a flawed character that is interesting.

I’d also point out he did end up leaving Tyrande alone in the end because he still cared about her and his brother and thought it would actually make them happy.

Because it felt like a retcon of how things left off in TFT.

I admit also because his single minded obsession for one woman for ten millenia feels uncharacteristic and bordering on a bit creepy at times, but I admit that him being uncharacteristic in other ways already permeates his character.

How can it be a retcon? When most of the interactions between him/Tyrande were expounded on during WoTA, which happened before TFT.

As for his obsession with Tyrande, considering the guy spent 10,000 years in solitary I could see why he would cling to the one image that always gave him the most amount of happiness.

There is a bunch of ways to interpret it, that come from the idea of “if it does not serve the Purpose (be blessed), it should go”.

I think one of areas where there is a serious tension between a sizeable part of the players and the narrative team, is on topic of continuity.

What the devs seems to do could be summarized IMO as “if the story is good, but does not quite fit the story - things are flexible” (as Ion said, although it was Legion time).

What I see frequently said by the players could be summarized as “even if the story you want to tell might be good, if it requires the story to be “flexible” - it has to go / be repurposed”.

One of things that plagued quite a few projects I either dealt with or witnessed struggling could be described as “if I have a great answer, I am definitely answering the correct question”. Or “write the story for the scene” (try to bend the story to fit in the scene in our case).

Some things to consider. Neither if good or bad by itself, but one need to know the audience, if the specific customers there are, would support the suggested take for the specific product.

Stephen King is also one of the worst offenders when it comes to treating women like objects. He’s laughed at constantly in the men writing women subreddit because he always describes chest size first when describing any female character.

Oh lord, seriously? :face_with_raised_eyebrow: I don’t read his novels, so I wouldn’t know, but that’s so gross…

Yupp… it’s super gross. King really sets the bar for sexism in writing.

He should be realistic.
As in a piece of paper wont stop the Horde.

He is like PM neville holding that peace pact like it was going to stop WW2 but its worse since we are at WW4 already.

Knaak, sadly, has the same baggage as King in a lot of ways and just stops short of the full “titted downwards” meme, and he had a lot of influence on how a lot of major women in the series were written (like about half the kaldorei leadership)

How, lol, literally WHAT ABOUT HIM should be different? Explain how to make him “not a piece of paper.” What about him NOW is not realistic? Every single time somebody got beef with how Anduin is as character, they just say crap like this, “He should just be different! Or die!” and never explain what changes they would actually want for the character.

His unwavering trust in the opposite faction no matter how much contrary information or evidence is presented before him for one thing.

He is too idealistic. That is what is wrong with him as a character imo.
If you want to be specific of what singular trait is wrong with Andiun.

I would also add his tendency to throw the Alliance under a bus or a meatgrinder to shelter the Horde.

That’s one of the reasons I’m not a fan of Knaak. Between his male gaze that lingers on Tyrande, and his self insert, machismo around Illidan, the War of the Ancients trilogy is hard to get through.

Malfurian’s “silence Tyrande!” made my head spin, I wanted to slap him.

His self insert male gaze or another character?

His own male gaze, as the writer.
He does the same thing to Illidan, it’s either hero worship or homoeroticism.

He lingers on Illidan and Tyrande in the same kind of sensual way. But to be fair to knaak he spends way too much time describing irrelevant details.

By contrast I think Robert Brooks (the guy behind, positive masculinity Anduin) is doing a great job, there’s no gaze in his writing. He tackles Varian’s toxic masculinity without attacking it, in Son of the Wolf. Varian’s attitudes were wrong but not his masculinity, his was just another take on what it means to be masculine.

Read plenty of books there is always something to always complain about if you want to complain.

Unless we are talking about Terry Goodkind then everything is legitimate.

I read those books too many years ago besides the uber strong self-insert (innexcusable) which kind of made sense I don’t remember anything too sexist.
Never read Robert Brooks though.

So his unwavering faith that people will choose to do good if given the opportunity? I do not see that as a weakness, not in the slightest. And Anduin is not a doormat, there’s plenty of evidence to the contrary. We’re just not going to agree here.

I like characters like the Doctor, Steve Rogers, MISTER Rogers. I guess I just like that… I DO agree that there should be a modicum more character development for him, which is very clearly going to happen in either 9.1 or 9.2, “forever changed,” those were the words they used, yes?

I’m very tired of gritty realism. Very tired of shooting my way through my problems in games. It’s boring, to me personally. Being the ultimate macho-tuff-winner-guy who can’t show a single emotion outside of what makes him super-mega-tuff is not interesting or good.

Moments like this with the Dalek emperor;

“Then prove yourself, Doctor. What are you, coward or killer?”

And the Doctor grapples with the decision to wipe out half the planet to wipe out all the Daleks, OR not use the device, NOT kill billions of people, leaving the Daleks to turn EVERYONE into more Daleks. He ultimately decides he can’t bear the weight of those deaths on his own hands, and he says, “Coward. Any day.”

It’s one of the best moments from the entire history of the show. He chooses mercy, whenever possible, and it’s great. I love it. I wouldn’t trade those moments for anything. “We don’t trade lives.”

If it were up to me, I’d be rid of Horde/Alliance faction separation. It’ll probably happen canonically once player numbers go down below a certain amount. Couldn’t happen sooner, in my opinion.

I had to snip this out because I think this needs to be talked about.

That’s well and good for people who identify more with humans and Stormwind to say, because they’re the ones who aren’t feeling the direct consequences of the gritty realism that they are putting into the story. For those of us who are though, this feels like virtue at our expense - and I think that’s one of the reasons for this post, and why Anduin is catching flak from people like myself.

For me, this has become a grimdark setting, and I hate it. Having a mostly disinterested jerk on the other side of the world declare that my issues don’t matter because peace is more important only reinforces that, makes me resentful of him and what he represents, and ultimately undermines any enthusiasm I would have for identifying with the Alliance instead of just with the Night Elves.

To be clear, I like Anduin as a character, his values and intentions are good. I DO NOT agree with the things he has done 100%. Just like Steve Rogers, I adore that character, but fighting against the accords was a bonehead move. He’s an idiot, sometimes. But he’s my idiot. You get me? The Doctor is also an idiot, but :purple_heart::purple_heart:. I think there are a lot of good characters in the game, in the hands of mediocre writers. Which is a tragedy, honestly.

Like this xpac… I hate it. I hate what they’re doing to Anduin, to Sylvanas, to Baine, everyone. There was so much potential, but they’ve kind of squandered all of them. Every time I see a new spoiler thread, I brace myself, and I’m like OH GOD, what have they done to my babies now? :weary:

There is quite a big difference between steve rogers and Anduin.

Steve Rogers is a Respectable Man willing to fight for what he believes is right. Anduin is an 18 year old boy prince that has the brain of an eight year old.

Anduin is also just a boring 1 dimensional character where as steve rogers at least has a personality that isnt just “peace good war bad”

This is a horrible intepretation. Stormwind, you know the kingdom who has send farmers to do fight their wars. Is also feeling the effects. Anduin literally has to deal with the weigh of having to send people, some barely adults, to die fighting for him and the Alliance.

He never said the night elves issues are not important. At the same time he more then anyone is trying to play a balancing act of keeping EVERYONE’s best interest. If anything Anduin of all people is following his dad’s decision.

Varian had the final say if all the orcs were to be executed, he didn’t and vote with the pro internment camp. Similarly, I think Anduin has decided that a moment of respite for a planet that has spent the better part of a decade at war/near the edge of an apocalypse is a better idea than continuing a war that probably wont solve anything.

Then you were not paying attention. Anduin has always been more then peace at all cost(he literally tells you for the Alliance above all everytime you talk to him). The way I see it he think peace is in the best interest of the Alliance, at least for now.

I’d also point out Anduin personality comes out best when he actually let loose. Heroes of the Storm actually capture the lighter side of him best:
