I’m a long time arcane mage; it’s been my main character since I started back in late WotLK. Alter time used to be cool.
Until displacement came along. I loved displacement. I was able to know exactly how far I could travel and still return to my original blink point.
And now with Alter time, you have no idea where that line is. Now unless I’m mistaken, you’ll have the clock above your head no matter how far away you go. Except you don’t know if it’ll actually work or not.
There is no buff in place, the same way displacement worked. Meaning if you want a weak aura to show you how far you can go, that’s no longer an option. So it’s almost purely used for the health, not for the mobility, which takes away a lot of the fun.
Plus you have to choose between two blinks (shimmer), and a lower CD alter. Wasn’t that way before.
I don’t like how touch of the magi is a stock skill now instead of a talent, but I suppose I could get used to that.
TLDR : you don’t know how far you can go with alter time like you could with displacement.
Thoughts?

I don’t post on the forums much and didn’t know the post would be made under some lowbie alt. This is my main.
I agree we need a way to tell how far we can go.

Running without blinking won’t hit the limit. One blink and running won’t hit the limit. Two blinks and running hit the limit.
So I don’t blink twice.

I don’t like the removal of displacement anymore than you do, but to say that it “ruins arcane mage” is a stretch, even on the WOW forums. Given how arcane is in the best place it’s been in since Argus, I’ll take the few bad changes along with the multiple good ones. Given it’s Blizzard and how they repeatedly show they are not fans of arcane, it’s best to take what we get and like it.

For what its worth, I created a macro using the waypoint API. The max distance seems to be about 90 yards from where Alter Time was cast. This macro creates a waypoint when you use alter time , and then you can use the waypoint distance tracker to see if your at or above 90 yards.
/cast Alter Time
/run local m=C_Map.GetBestMapForUnit("player");local pX,pY= C_Map.GetPlayerMapPosition(m,"player"):GetXY();local t = UiMapPoint.CreateFromCoordinates(m,pX,pY);C_Map.SetUserWaypoint(t);C_SuperTrack.SetSuperTrackedUserWaypoint(true);
This same technique could be easily ported into a lua addon where some text or icon is displayed automatically when that distance is reached. Macros are sadly limited to 255 characters.

Why are you bumping a two year old thread?

I have no idea how people even stumble on posts as old as this in the first place.

Dude you’re a demon hunter not a death knight. Stop trying to cast raise dead. It’s not working right!
Don’t you know that necromancy is the fastest way to get kicked out of the Kirin Tor?
