You are exactly right, the behaviour of both sides would be completely identical because both sides are played by humans who tend to act completely in their own interests, even if it inevitably damages everyone long term.
However you are missing an important note; actions have consequences, it doesn’t matter if the alliance would have done the same because they didn’t.
If I have the key to a safe with 1 bazillion dollars in it and my neighbour doesn’t have such key, I steal the money and he doesn’t because he can’t even though he definitely would, all the consequences will be on me and none on him
I’d say a good middle ground would be allowing this to continue for 1 month, heck its not even close to as bad, while your av experience is significantly hindered, you don’t have to queue for av, the majority of the game is still available, every part of the game’s experience throughout all of p2 was affected if you played alliance, there were no ways to opt out.

Except they did. Not to the extremes as the few severely imbalanced servers, but plenty of raid groups were formed. Leveling still involved getting ganked by numerous Alliance 60s looking for that honor. Death runs if you wanted to do BRD exp runs.
u rolled fotm horde like every other 17 year old and now come the q times, unfun server experience and u dont like it and cant stop crying
