Imagine if wow were to be empowered with AI agents for every NPC. Imagine if they were given a prompt that includes their entire back story and the chronological history of the game and had the ability to reply like improv actors who never break character.
Eventually a game like this will be made and it will change everything.
With all of the games being canceled lately it makes me wonder if they’re just holding back because this new tech is almost ready
eventually a game like this will be made and it will crash and burn almost instantly because it will either have 1) unrealistic hardware requirements or 2) put the company under almost instantly having to pay for all those tokens
All im saying is imagine a version of the game where that is happening. You could actually chat with the npcs and the world would feel so much more alive
They could give you advice on the quest or clues But it would require the quests to be more than kill/loot repeat
Just this week I created 3 AI agents that perform task work for me. The tech to do this on a small scale already exists but as one above said, right now the energy and token cost is too high. Eventually though…who knows?
They™ could simply bulk generate static backgrounds for all of the NPCs.
It then straightforward to add light weight natural language interface on top of that background meta data to interact with players. The background is only so big, there’s only so much they can say, you don’t need “full boat LLM AI” to power this.
Of course as we’ve learned from all sorts of dynamic, generated content – it’s all empty. After awhile, all of the characters will be “the same”, as there’s no true kernel of creativity at the bottom of it.
What I would like more is for each little “scene” within the game (and there are a zillion of them), to have an NPC that can talk to what that place is, what the designers were thinking when they created that little camp. It can just be a paragraph, doesn’t need to be interactive. Just a NPC with a “What is this place” question option.
Or a lore keeper in a nearby town that can talk about things.
For example, if you go to Anderhal, you can’t get the story of the place. You really have to go back to WCIII to learn about what happened there. You just see the aftermath twice removed, but no one to tell you how it became that way.
The amount of games getting canceled didn’t really change, there’s just more visibility on it now, devs are in contact with journalists, their project gets canned, they’re pissed, they tell the journalists to out the story and piss off their employer.
