Aging gamers in wow

Yeah we finally got dsl in 2009. My house was three houses too short, have to wait till 2012. The phone did even offer dialup to till very late for some reason. We had bell south here. You could not raid much. It really miss up graphics. While most hope you have dsl. In America there still those who do not have it. In less you get satellite service.

My in-laws live about 50 feet too far for DSL or cable. No lie.

That rural America for you. Some places its a dead zone.

Way back when in '05 in my original ally guild one of are healers and his dad were both on the same dial up connection…

It’s definitely a dead zone, can’t even get cell service there.

Up until about a year ago I didn’t really even get cell phone service. If I stood outside I would occasionally get 1 bar and be able to make a quick call but really spotty. Even now it’s like 2 bars (but at least consistent).

Yeah it kinda sucks. I am always a bit nervous when we have really bad weather because if they lose power if something happens and they need help they are pretty much boned.

Two phone lines? Crazy, right!

I used to do Wintergrasp on dialup, and I think I started raiding while I was still on dialup. It wasn’t too bad, things would lag a bit, but I learned to compensate, and if my performance ever faltered, the group let me know, and I sat out. What was really bad was Brewfest! The lag was so bad, lol, I couldn’t do the ram racing at all.

However, I don’t see how that would correlate to aging gamers. Young people use dialup still, and older people use DSL, cable, etc. I am old(enough to know better, young enough not to care) and I use cable now. One should not judge others based on their internet connection.

One thing I like about living in/near a major city (Wash DC) is the awesome internet speeds. I have fios and it’s great.

When I was playing the game we were using AOL, family wasn’t dirt poor but we also didn’t have much money. Internet back then was only used for surfing and rarely used from games in my house. I had a rough time but wrath was too good to pass up.

I had dial up through BC I think. I’d get really upset when people called the house and even more upset if it was someone trying to sell something.

Also this reminds me of when I used to raid Kara. Most of the other raiders were soldiers stationed in the middle east. All of them had like 10 second lag so they got really, really good at learning the patterns to fights and doing everything super coordinated timing the buttons and movements ahead of time to match. It was actually pretty impressive…

Just as an aside, I used to LOVE trolling telemarketers. A fun troll was to act really interested in what they were selling then at the final moment back out of the sale. Another fun one was speaking with an extremely thick accent that was hard for them to understand. I used to like using a thick Irish or Indian accent. Another fun one was putting them on holdand playing extremely violent gangster rap in the background. Biggie’s song ā€œDead Wrongā€ or Tupac’s ā€œHit 'Em Upā€ were some of my favs to play.

Yes I know that all was sad, lame, stupid and immature to do… but that’s what made it fun.

I’m not an aging gamer! I’m still young and hip… right?

Anyway, I did play FFXI on DSL when it came out, but I did suffer through dial-up for a bit before then.

not that wow was a thing in the days of dial up

but

we had dedicated lines.

You got a second phone line, just for the internet, or you played at hours when nobody would call you.

If you couldn’t afford that second line (like me), it was more likely you started gaming on Diablo and the like at around 930 PM, when it was impolite to call.

You didn’t get bumped off dialup if you didn’t have call waiting, or if you disabled it before dialing in.

To get cell service here I had to by a cell phone booster. My phone only works when near it mostly. Cloudy days I give up.

i only played EQ on dialup.
glad thats over with
