Since when were timegates and achievements “content”? Everything you can do to unlock essences will still be there if essences were mailed to every 120 character at rank 3.
Wanted to point this out but they cut out the rep requirement, they’ve said nothing about the follower requirement from what I can tell. 3000XP for rank 2

You could apply this to pretty much anything.
Legendary quest chains in MoP or WoD.
Or classic right now requiring AV exalted and honor grind for BiS gear on every alt.
Do that three times and then we’ll talk.
And it’ll probably still remain a highly competitive essence at rank 3 come 8.3, which is a large issue because EP is going to be outdated come 8.3.
Still requires Revered and a significant amount of Spare Parts. They just made this ever so slightly more reasonable, but still not very reasonable.
Still a significant amount of time you’re spending in extremely outdated content.
If you play BGs on your alts, 30k honor goes by real quick. I’ve done it twice now, maybe 3 times, would need to check my other alts I PvPed on.
No, it’s literally been nerfed and made obsolete. It’s dead.
You’ll get the parts by the time you hit revered, the cost is massively nerfed too.
So do it in less time with Mrrgl! and Barks. 2 weeks to get an alt up and ready is nothing.
I’m sorry but I disagree, the problem with essences is that there are plenty of sources of power in bfa without them, and many of those are already an individual hassle. Essences are uniquely awful to get for alts, and even for mains, and next patch we’re gonna be worrying about ap, gear, getting viable corruption sets coinciding our cloak levels, earning the 8.3 essences which also won’t have some alt boost, and 8.2 essences if we want to play something else or if we play one of the classes that lack a role and our immediate group needs that role.
Like you said in legion they let us give our fresh into quest legion alts legiondaries, and to be honest I think leveling with essences would be fun especially since bfa had an issue where you go in feeling strong with your legiondaries and you hit 115 and slog through the last 5 levels, essences would redeem that a bit. For real though leveling with focusing iris, sign me up.
But most importantly essences are a big part of a character’s scaling, blood of the enemy isn’t gonna be super strong if your rocking 285 crit gear, but a 490 beast stacking crit damage and crit scalling corrupted gear might do some next level damage with it, even with rank 3 essences there is plenty of things to do already.
That said I agree that definition of account bound essences is kinda hazy, because i say i support it, but I’d really prefer a system like legion where you just get tokens the same way you got legiondaries and mail them to your alts heirloom style. It would be nice to be able to just buy all my alts blood of the enemy and never suffer through alliance random battlegrounds again.

I wouldn’t use classic as an argument, wow is a ship of Theseus and that ship has sailed for 15 years and a little more.
Similarly you could say that we didn’t have a legendary quest chain in legion or bfa for a reason, for example the war campaign could easily have fit something like that, instead we’re having the equivalents, the argus ring and the 8.3 cloak thrown at us as new zone content with quests and such.
Also won’t that issue in classic be resolved once they hit a later phase with higher tier raids? I’ll admit thats part of why i’m not too interested in classic myself though.
By now it is clear that it’s not going to happen. They view essences as character progress and not account progression. I need to look into what the new essences are going to be like to see if I want to continue working upon the current ones on my alts. Really it’s not that bad, most alts can get by just fine with level 2s.
The new ones have Corruption Resistance. If you’re into using corrupted gear, you’ll probably want to use them, at least early on when your cloak isn’t as good as it could be.

If that is the case why all the harping over the essences?
Look there are a ton of freebies for alts already in place. If everything was just handed out there really wouldn’t be any point to the game.

The problem with such a design philosophy is the assumption that people will stay on the treadmill for alts instead of just unsubbing once they have their mains squared away. I know when the treadmill exists as it does with essences, I won’t go through the same hoops over and over for each alt. It’s just too much for me.
While I can’t say my line of thinking is the majority, I know I am not alone in it. Had essences been account wide, I’d have been more inclined to stay subbed and play my alts more. Instead, I play other games.

Real catch up mechanics didn’t exist in Classic so why are you even bringing it up?
…and there were catch up mechanics for the Ring in WoD.
I could be wrong but I think his point is that if you wanted something then you earned it or did w/o.
And there are catchup for some of the essences next patch…
Here are a few:

Reputation requirements for Nazjatar and Mechagon vendor-sold Essences have been reduced from Honored/Revered/Exalted for ranks 1/2/3 to Friendly/Honored/Revered.
- Acquisition of Rank 4 of these Essences is unchanged.

The follower experience requirements for Ranks 2 and 3 of Memory of Lucid Dreams have been reduced from 3000/6000 to 2400/4800.

Players who are Revered with their respective Nazjatar reputation may now exchange Manapearls for Bind-to-Account reputation tokens.
We expect the addition of account-bound rep tokens for Nazjatar to complement the existing account-bound reputation token that is craftable in Mechagon, providing an option for players who have already unlocked the Rank 3 Essence on their main to speed up their progression towards it on their alts.
Except, it will stop people from playing, and turn off people from wanting to comeback.
I had friends who hadn’t played in a few years, asking if they should comeback when BFA was on sale “nope, you will be stuck in months long grind”

You seem to be completely missing the point that many of us don’t want to run old content we’ve already seen ad nauseum. In this case Mech and Nazjatar.
I don’t want account wide Essences I just want to be able to purchase/earn them in 8.3 content.
