Account silence for name violation

Hello, I hope you are having a nice day,

As the title states, I just got hit with a account silence for undetermined amount of time recently for a “name violation”, I have not attempted to appeal this yet but not sure what to do. I’m mainly surprised about the account silence because this was a name violation. Also surprised my email didn’t explain how long the silence would be but I have read on the forums it is usually 1 week. Has anyone been through this before, and if so, should this be appealed and will it actually do anything, seeing as there is no reasonable reason why the automated ban system flagged me other than report abuse.

Sidenote: I thought the account penalty was the name change and not the account silence. My account is not showing the account silence penalty but it is active. Are both the penalties? Just want clarification and I don’t want to make matters worse. I really enjoy wow and do my best to be a good player.

Thanks.

If it’s a silence it’s a week and is almost certainly something you said in a public channel. You could appeal if you want and really don’t know what you did, but there’s a fair chance the week will be up by the time your appeal is heard.

If you got reported for a name violation and it’s your first offense, you just get flagged for a rename. Unless it’s a really really bad name or you keep renaming your character bad names, that’s when you’ll get a suspension and not a silence. I’m confident about that but there’s other people who frequent here who can correct me if I’m wrong.

So on a naming violation, I think you are required to change your name as well as you get a 24 hour silence. Someone might be able to confirm the length of the silence since I am not 100% on that.

Just a FYI if its a forced name change dont change it back to the original name thats only gona make the next penalty worse put in a apeal by all means and wait till morning and a blue can shed some light on the name since im guessing its not this toon.

The silence is a recent change, I think, an additional rap on the wrist to get people to be mindful of the rules since just a forced rename alone didn’t seem to be having the deterring effect that they wanted.

Typically, it starts out with just the forced name change. But those sanctions do stack, and previous infractions do not fall off your record.

While it should have showed how long the silence is for, if you go to the Account Restrictions page, it should be there. That is also where you can begin your appeal, should you wish to.

You can check that by going here: https://us.support.blizzard.com/en/help/restrictions

The system is not automated. Player reports brought the issue to the GMs. GMs decided your name was in violation. They pushed the name change and sanctioned your account. So no automation, and no report abuse.

As to will it actually do anything to appeal? It never hurts to, unless the name that was reported was obviously against the CoC.

Good luck to you.

What Jalanill said, they’ve added silences to forced name changes recently. I think the name change silences start at 1 hour and escalate from there with further forced name changes?

ETA: it’s possible if you had name change infractions before they started adding silences to them that this one started higher because of the history too.

Hello, I do want to take a moment to explain that there is absolutely no such thing as an automated ban system in WoW.

Every single ban is applied after a definitely real human being looks over the case and specifically concludes that the case deserved a ban or other account action.

Please do not spread misinformation regarding automated account actions because they certainly do not exist.

It’s still worth appealing on the off chance that it’s an erroneous penalty because silences double in length with each future penalty, meaning if this one isn’t appealed (successfully at least) it will remain permanently listed on the account and the next silence, if one is given, will be two weeks.

That is correct. Errors do occur with account penalties.

Sorry for the confusion, Neath, as you likely have realized by now the silence was only for an hour. It is part of the penalty system that is applied when the name penalty is applied. It didn’t used to work that way but was updated not that long ago and now does.

Basically, when a name or potential chat violation is reviewed, if a violation is confirm we allow the system to apply the penalty, which does so in specific time frame (unless we decide to override it - which is rare). For example, if I were to penalize a name I would just mark that it did violate policy, the system would check the penalty history on the account and use the penalty that was appropriate and apply it.

I hope that clears it up.

Hello @Vrakthris, hope you are having a lovely day,

Also, you are right, i did miss the duration, was seeing the silence message pass the duration (again missed it completely) I thought something else was amiss and hence created the post. I do not see the silence message in game anymore but glad i came here to check. Your message does clear it up and you explained it perfectly, thank you for taking the time to do so!
