About the now mandatory Authenticator

What are you talking about? The black/grey market for video game currency/items/services is well known to be run by large criminal groups. Mostly in certain countries. There is nothing alternative about that.

Honestly, it’s 2021, everyone should be using MFA every single place they can. No excuses, I sure didn’t need this change to have MFA. I’ve had it since they released the original physical authenticator.

Two words says it all… “He means.” I learned a long time ago… mean what you say and say what you mean. Nes Pas…

But i’m not on a contract service and my authenticator works just fine. I haven’t been on one for years really. For the longest time I was on MetroPCS and now on Metro by T-Mobile since the merger.

Not sure if this will get this post flagged for posting a website, but this explains how to setup the authenticator to use with Bluestacks or Nox…

I getcha. I have a cell myself. Drives me crazy sometimes how much time we all spend staring at those things and jumping every time it makes a sound.

Unfortunately they’re a reality of the world we live in. But we don’t have to like it.

Can you go into LFG and customize the title/text? and do you have your 20 slots in your backpack?

I think what they’re saying is if you set it up years ago without SMS protect, it still works today. But now it’s required to setup SMS protect to also setup the authenticator (and that SMS protect now has additional requirements that may or may not have been there years ago).

The authenticator app is great security for your account. It’s only a very minor inconvenience to use. It’s free.

This is false and you should stop being obtuse.

You CAN make groups…you just can’t CUSTOMIZE the group text and have to rely on the default given by the game.

Blizzard isn’t going to rework their entire system because YOU have some unique issue that is almost certainly solvable if you weren’t being so stubborn anyway.

I think people’s issue is it is NOT just having an authenticator. You have to have the extra SMS step completed too. So your account can have an authenticator and you can still be unable to enter custom text. I have the SMS portion set up, but my friend who still uses a the keyfob authenticator can’t put in custom text.

The reduction in selling spam in the group finder was crazy amazing over the past time since they started requiring the authenticators for custom text. My friend could still enter custom text at that point. So the SMS part has to be new with the patch and is likely the part which is causing unnecessary headaches for real players.

I appreciate your point of view. I’ve been long irritated by the loud conversations in public places sometimes with the extra fun of the person not wanting to put the phone to their face so they use it speaker style. But at the end of the day, you can still have a regular smartphone and simply choose to use it only as a phone. Far from being attached at the hip with my phone, half the time, I have to get my husband to call my phone so I can find it.

However, if you have a smartphone you don’t usually use and suddenly run into an actual NEED for it, it can save the day. Just a couple weeks ago, I was in a strange city with my parents for my auntie’s funeral and we had to park on the street. The credit card slot on the meter wasn’t working and just possessing a smartphone meant we could punt to the “download this app to pay for time” instructions and not worry about it. Cases like this are few and far between, but it made a HUGE DIFFERENCE right then. Just saying.

Damn they’re already at 1014? I thought they were only at 15.

I know some may not understand this, but requiring only SMS for authentication can be problematic for some people. This is why with most three-factor authentication (which in a way, is what they are trying to implement), allows for the passcode to be sent by either SMS, Voice, or Email. Take my case, when I set up Battle.net Authenticator I used the key fob Authenticator to generate the token and choose not to set up the SMS. Why? It was not because I didn’t own a smart phone (I do) or want to, but because there are places where smart phone will not work (even in the US) and I happen to live at one. To get any bars on my smart phone I have to drive over 5 miles from home. There is this thing called mountains in the way of any cell towers. So, I only use the smart phone on when I’m away from home (and a landline at home) If you live in or near a city or town (in the US), SMS is great, but if you live in a rural area or in some countries, you may not have access to SMS. Since the game requires an internet access to run, giving the person the choice of SMS or email, but don’t limit it to just one protocol, not everyone will have access to it.

Yes, all my other accounts (banking and the like) will either send a text message with a number code to type into the website, or send an email with a code. I’m not sure what is the most secure, but if banks feel like a text message code is safe enough, you would hope it is safe enough to play a video game through text/email message authentication.

I experienced this tonight when I went to the Maw’s World Boss. However, since I was by myself and saw an empty box, I figured no one was running a raid at that particular time. So I just closed the portal box.

But decided to try one more time since I was already up there by the platform out of agro range. Seems when I opened up the LFR box the first time it failed to register, but when I opened it up the second time, it clicked. So I just chalked it up to lag.

Yeah, that is the issue. Suitable phones and does it work on prepay now. :frowning:

Does it work on this phone?

It isn’t just tied to your phone though. If you are on android then that app will be tied to your google account.

So you could lose your phone, get a new phone, sign in on your google account, redownload the app, log in and be fine. Just save your serial / restore code from the app and you are good to go.

Also you rarely need to even use the app. I can’t even remember the last time I had to send a push to mine. I think it was like 2 years ago when I logged in to the forums at work.

“What if I don’t even own a Cell Phone, or any other portable style phones? I don’t even use apps. How does this work for people like me?”
