Errrr…Do we have any idea whether Classic is, in fact, drawing anywhere near comparable numbers to Retail? I haven’t really seen anything that would make me think this is true. I would be interested in seeing sources.
hahaha when do conspiracy theories EVERE come true?? amirite???
i think ur the conspiracy nut here
Classics success has proven that Management’s design decisions over the years have just been WRONG. Those guys must be sweating. The ship that THEY created is on the rocks with noone to blame but themselves. They can’t blame a changing marketplace or aging player base anymore because many of us returned at the chance to play a Blizzard sanctioned version of Vanilla.
I don’t think Blizzard is “threatened” by Classic’s success. I really think it’s all about the money. A long time ago Blizzard hitched it’s wagon to Activision. Now they are no longer in control of their own destiny.
They only have the resources for Shadowlands because their corporate overlords say so.
I’m pretty sure that when Blizzard released their earning statement in q4 of 2019, they “more than doubled” their subscription base for WoW.
Yeah, it’s a fact that more sub money is coming in these days from the classic side. However, retail side has a cash shop and tokens, so there’s no way from the outside to tell which side is making more money. I’d be willing to bet retail still makes more.
Just like the first time around, I dont think they were prepared for how popular it would prove to be. I always got the sense that Classic is just a side hustle for them. Despite its popularity I dont think thats changed for them.
Is a common problem with MMORPG games. Players spend years of time building their character, getting to know other players, getting familiar with the world etc… Most games you can just release a sequel for players to go to, but it is more complicated with MMO’s. Nobody wants to throw away their super geared characters that they have dumped so much time in to and start a new sequel game.
Just look at how badly EQ2 failed. I was still raiding in EverQuest when the sequel came out, and barely any players i knew were interested in the slightest in playing it. So they keep adding, and adding, and adding, and adding, and adding, and adding content for years and try and milk out as much as they can out of a game that honestly would have just died years ago if it was any other genre while the new updated game EQ2 died out. People still pay EQ, but nobody plays EQ2.
Eventually players get bored of logging in and doing the same daily quests, bounties, or whatever you want to call them day after day and just go to a different game eventually. The excitement of getting that sword that has a cool effect on it is gone now that 90% of the players also have that same sword or something just as “cool”.
Linking questionable 10 month old data isn’t a “fact.”
Wait until Shadowlands drops, then count. I’m here because of the dumpster fire that is BfA. I was going to unsub, then they gave me a chance to play the original, which I missed out on.
If Shadowlands is good, it will occupy more of my game time. I miss my toys, mounts, and other aspects of Retail.
In the end I will play both. Classic is better in many ways, the talent tree is one example. I for one hope they continue to support both.
Ok sunshine.
Glad you agree.
More to the point, unprovable by anyone but Blizzard, and they ain’t talking.
Personally I think we’ll find Classic isn’t posting the same numbers as Retail. People think because they don’t see as many people in an area on Retail it’s “dead”, not realizing there are WAY more servers and people are more spread out.
When you only have a dozen servers, of COURSE, they are going to be packed.
I seriously wish Blizz would just report the numbers, even just once, so we can end this debate.
These days?
Or…
Back in August after Classic launched, and people were feeling disaffected by Retail from a not-well-received xpac, people jumped over to Classic and people who had left came back which caused a huge spike that month?
I’m willing to bet that’s not currently still the case.
Of 11 or so retail people i know that went to classic, 2 still play classic, including myself. Classic servers are so dead right now its sad.
If they don’t want Classic to become the main game then maybe they shouldn’t ruin retail more and more with every new expansion.
