A heartfelt message from Xu-Fu’s Pet Guides on the upcoming Midnight changes

Love your site, pet collector more than a battler, so really appreciate your help with Blackrock

With nearly 2000 unique battle pets, it would break my heart to lose pet battles. Companion pets that don’t battle are of ZERO interest to me. I need new wild pets, new pet WQ, and new achievs please. You can keep the silly house, just give me the pets!

Dear Blizz,
To spur interest in pet battling for newcomers to pets, how about this:

  1. A series of quests each rewarding a good battle pet from each family at max level.
  2. Remove levels from all pets (I hate to offer this solution but I understand it is daunting to new players to capture and level hundreds of pets)

Pet battle quests are my favorite type of world quests.

I do pet battles almost every day. Every time there’s a world quest up that rewards Polished Pet Charms? Im doing it. I really dont want this aspect of WoW to disappear. >.<

Dearest Blizzard, please keep the pet battle system going! Pet battles and collecting are my zen, my reward for doing all the other stuff in-game. The system as it has been, from the Family Familiar achievements to the pet battle dungeons is nothing we could ever find in another game. It’s another thing that makes WoW irreplaceable. Please reconsider! Thank you! Thanks Aranesh!

I support the sentiments to keep pet battling. We’ve already lost niche activities in WoW like first aid and archaeology that make the game singular and unique in the MMO genre. It’s small things like this that really keep me playing throughout an entire expansion.

I think a good idea might be, instead of inta leveling…allow new pet battlers to get a special stone that insta levels their collection when they hit 50 unique pets. Any pets after that you still have to level, but it gives new players a nice stable of pets once they’ve caught/bought/obtained 50.

Then add a lot more stones to wild pet battles (like a 1 in 5 drop rate), and boost pet xp for both wild pet battles and trainers and world quests.

I enjoy catching all the pets in each expansion. It is something I enjoy doing. The world quest pet battles to earn tokens are ones I do always. New pets, new pet content is a key item contributing to my enjoyment of the game!

Yah know for a part of World of Warcraft game that many say doesn’t attracted many players or has many players doing it, I see an awful lot of new names with high achievements points making comments about this change too Pet Battles that they don’t like…quite interesting …thank you folks for making it known you are not happy with the changes coming too the game in Midnight.

It’s actually depressing to go through K’aresh. I’m getting some nice gear upgrades, but there are all these interesting critters which would make some cool-looking pets.

Once we were worried about the “power creep,” and now it seems we won’t have to worry about that, or anything else pertaining to pets at all.

I don’t see how they can say low end engagement now from the amount of folks that liked the first post …never seen a post only 9 days old get that many likes now that fast…or this many posts by players…just shows there is not a low end engagement with the player base but a med to high one.

I have been a huge Pet Collector since it came out all those XPacs ago. Considering the community this min-game within WoW has, not to mention my own, would be a travesty to overall WoW experience and would most likely lose the game a ton of Subs == $$$$. Please put a little bit of effort in to keep this aspect of the game alive. Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Thank you, Aranesh for your great website. I never would have made it through the Celestial Tournament without the help of you and the many pet battle lovers who have contributed to Xu-Fu’s Pet Guides.

To Blizzard: I am sorry to see that you are sunsetting pet battles. I am sorry that your development team is stretched so thin that you can’t make pet battling move forward in tandem with the housing features promised for Midnight.

I came to World of Warcraft in 2019 after many years of playing Diablo I thru III and StarCraft. WoW is fun because it offers a deeper world experience with things to do besides conquer, kill and loot. The proposed “iteration” on pet battling for Midnight places pets in the loot category. Looting a vanity pet is boring. If I want to loot pets, I will play Pokemon Go.

Awww Blizz, don’t kill pet battles! It’s about the only reason I came back to WoW. I’m not good enough for mythics or raiding. Let the rest of us have our fun! I have 2 accounts and level one set of toons thru Legion pet battling. And then get them some basic gear thru Timewalking. I make enough gold to pay for both my accounts thru selling pets. If there’s no pet battles in Midnight, I might as well give up again… : (

This system has been so much fun and i love collecting and using my pets to earn achievements. I do not want housing at the expense of battle pets.

We seem to be in a bit of a catch-22 here, or a sort-of vicious circle - Blizzard are claiming “low engagement” for pet battles, yet there has been no significant development of the Pet Battle system in several expansions, except just “more volume” - adding in new pets & a couple trainers, & that’s it. Heck, there hasn’t been a new pet-battle dungeon since, what, halfway through BfA!?!

It’s a bit unfair of Blizzard to do basically nothing with Pet Battles for several years, accuse us all of “not engaging” - then use that as the reason to continue doing nothing with Pet Battles.

i love collecting them, i regularly do battles with them, across the world, on multiple characters, both wild and with tamers (i don’t PVP), and i have not decreased my engagement/involvement with battle pets & Pet Battles at all since they system was first introduced all those years ago.

i’d rather see more work put in this system, than the ridiculous (and in many cases, completely unrelated to WoW mythology) variety of transmog gear they’re developing at a seemingly increasing and endless rate…

Unfortunately that seems to be how Blizzard deal with things they no longer have any interest in maintaining. They slowly reduce new content for it, introduce bugs/don’t fix bugs related to content there, then claim that the lack of people engaging in the content available is a reason to reduce it more, etc, etc, and there is goes on until they phase it out completely.

They’re doing something similar with guild vaults - introduced a massive bug that wiped them out, didn’t fix it properly, left others in that made the vaults virtually unusable - the next step is to remove them, saying there’s not enough user engagement.

It’s a pity, because one of the things that always keeps me playing WoW isn’t the raids, or the end game content, it’s the breadth of other content available, the feeling that I’m never going to “complete” the game and that there is always something to do. Pet Battles is a big part of that. It’s supposed to be an evergreen feature, something that, when I have a bit of down time of other stuff to do, is my “fall back” hobby in WoW. But now it seems to be going down the same route as archaelogy (which is something I really enjoyed too).

Oh, and BTW … Xu-Fu is an AWESOME site and I love it. Blizzard should be doing their best to encourage and enable sites like this to grow, as they’re basically one big advert for WoW and I have no doubt help retain subscriptions and thus income, for Blizzard.

I’m an older player who has stuck with Warcraft for twenty years. Pet battles and collecting are the thing that has kept me engaged since they were introduced. There are so many things I wouldn’t ever do in the game except that they have battle pet rewards. I don’t have the reaction time to PvP (to be fair, I was never very good at it) and the kids will always be better and faster raid healers than I can be (shout out to my guild for taking me along anyway!)

It’s content I can do at my own speed and be good at, succeeding via sheer persistence rather than fast reactions. Please don’t take that away.

I totally agree with this comment. I am a collector but love the battles.
