A cinematic isn't always a good thing

Seems like most full cgi is for orcs. I liked the animation, it was soft and pretty. I think it fit the scene well.

How’re you going to make this thread and not at least link me to the cinematic in question? Now I’m going to have to click at least 2 times to see it!

People are complaining about the short animation? They must be new, because the last few xpacs all had short animations to tell a part of the story and whet the appetite for the coming game.

I guess when someone’s new to WoW, they just don’t realise this.

(I’m completely discounting the idea that any experienced player would complain about something that’s been done so many times before. Those people are clearly whiners, and can be safely ignored.)

I watched the video, and my only complaint is that Uther’s voice is a bit too close to Khadgar’s. Same actor, clearly, but he could’ve used a different timbre to space the characters apart a bit more.

Both FFXIV and WoW have, imo, very impressive art direction, including their cinematics. The ones we’re getting for Uther and friends, as well as for the orcs in WoD, the ladies in BfA are almost like a comic book. They aren’t as expensive or extravagant, though we also know from their numerous Saurfang related cinematics in BfA they’re even moving to having a few full cinematics during the xpac too.

As nice as it would be to have every single thing be a major CGI cinematic, it’s simply not practical, and these shorts can get their purpose across quite well without needing to be fully animated.

That and i like them a lot…

I have a question now that I’ve watched the video: how did the Legion find out about Shadowlands runes in order to craft Frostmourne? Someone would’ve had to die in Azeroth that’s not a demon (they go to the Twisting Nether) and then return from the SL (that’s not supposed to happen) to tell them. It doesn’t make sense.

I really hope they don’t make Uther a villain…

They actually started with MoP and the Burdens of Shaohao.

The Nathrezim seem to have some connection with Revendreth. Might be something they figured out before they were demons.

From that video, I got the sense there’s going to be some sort of traitor in the Shadowlands, possibly an old lore character. Devos seemed pretty upset SL secrets had escaped, because she thought it was impossible.

Something more, Frostmourne was guarded by ancient spirit beings in WC3. What exactly it means I dunno but they really didn’t want Arthas near it to protect him and Azeroth.

True, I’d forgotten that.

I kind of prefer these to the huge, over-produced spectacle CGI cut-scenes these days. I’m being completely serious.

They were amazingly impressive earlier on in the game’s life, but now CG is so high-quality and so ubiquitous, I’ll watch them once, say ‘neat’, and then never look at them again.

Considering how expensive they must be to produce, I have to wonder if they’re even worth having. We could have many of these simpler animatics over one CG cutscene, for example.

The only thing I dislike about these animations is they find their way into the game. The difference in style is too jarring to immersion for me.

Agreed.
The comic art style with the hanging frames helps convey a lot of the emotion and feeling of the cinematic as well.

It would have been harder to get the same effect with regular animation imo.

They aren’t cinematics, they are animated shorts, and anybody complaining about them is certifiable.

I like the animations like Afterlife… and all of those that have come before them.

Quite frankly, I like them better than the full blown cinematics. They have an awesome visual style and are usually slower paced. They really immerse you in the moment.

That was just a couple of story boards with some audio slapped on top. Not saying the art wasn’t quality but I refuse to consider it as animation.

You made a lot of very good points, very well said, Lilithia.

I enjoyed their similar animations with Sylvanas and the Lich King and the Illidan Stormrage one with the Demon Hunters.

Blizzard will always make the high quality cinematic throughout the expansion as they did with Saurfang in Battle for Azeroth. I like them both.

Who the heck is saying this?
Even as negative as these forums are, I’ve seen nothing but praise for the cinematic itself.
