A 20 year resto Druids take

Forcing a HoT Healer Into a Reactive Playstyle is Madness

I have been a Restoration Druid for almost two decades, and this is the worst state the spec has ever been in.

The current design has completely stripped away our identity, turning a proactive HoT healer into a frantic, reactive class that can’t heal its way out of a paper bag.

The Core Issues Right Now:

  • Outpaced by Single-Button Heals: I am consistently being outhealed by other healing classes in significantly lower item level gear. While they press one heavy direct heal to instantly top the group, I am fighting for my life.

  • The Punishment of the “Ramp”: I have to struggle to maintain five Rejuvenations that feel nearly worthless, just to spot heal. Unless I have cast five spells first, my throughput is non-existent—and those HoTs drop off almost immediately after casting a single reactive heal.

  • Crippling Mana Economy: I am plowing through mana like never before. It is a massive struggle to have any mana left at all during demanding, long-form raid fights because of how many global cooldowns we are forced to burn.

We are not supposed to be reactive healers. Please look at the mechanical loop of this class, because flat aura buffs cannot fix a design philosophy that fundamentally breaks how Druids are meant to play.

I agree that the recent changes to druid healing are bad. The removal of the HoT extension component of Verdant Infusion felt particularly bad, as that at least allowed us to keep our Lifebloom/Everbloom target covered, giving us more time to heal everyone else. They literally took the worst elements of Druid healing and found a way to make them worse, which is crazy.

With that said, I’m doing what I do every time we get fed a turd sandwich. Adapt.

You shouldn’t focus on trying to manually cast 5 rejuvenation HoTs to maintain abundance.

With there no longer being any compelling reason to take Verdant Infusion, you can take Prosperity instead. That gives us two Swiftmend charges.

With Power of the Archdruid (talent), every time you Swiftmend and then cast Rejuvenation, it lands on 3 targets (the target you cast it on, and two others). With two Swiftmend charges, this actually makes it relatively easy to maintain 5+ rejuvenation HoTs. It’s even more efficient if you are consuming Regrowth or Wild Growth HoTs with your Swiftmend, so that it’s not removing any Rejuvenation HoTs. In my experience, Swiftmend already seems to prioritize removing a Regrowth HoT if there are multiple HoTs on a target. Or if you do remove a Rejuvenation HoT with Swiftmend, try to make sure it’s one that is already about to expire.

Using Swiftmend proactively to help spread rejuvenation not only helps to maintain abundance stacks, it also causes more “Blooming Frenzy” procs from your Everbloom (every time you cast Swiftmend).

I’ve said this many times, they changed R.Druid into a reactive healer with extra steps (applying HoTs) to do average healing. The gameplay doesn’t feel rewarding at all.

If they intend to keep this lame playstyle, the least they could do is make Germination a passive that applies a second Rejuv automatically when you cast Rejuv, in order to alleviate the GCD bloat.

Having to cast Rejuv TWICE on every group member is exhausting and leaves no room for other spells, that’s why our average DPS is so low despite having very high potential damage. We simply don’t have enough globals.

And the most concerning part about this whole situation is that they haven’t realized where the problem truly lies, thus why they keep applying lazy aura buffs that solve nothing.

I want flourish added to trigger off the same abilites as our 4 piece does, the 3 minute only tied to tranq thing sucks, but if it was also on convoke, incarn (and reforestation stop ignoring keeper blizz) and natures swiftness i think thatd give it enough use cases that we could get some consistent extended ramps and start the spec heading back in the right direction.
If its on nature’s swiftness itd also keep the spell relevant after this season, i wouldnt even mind if its a shorter extension (4 seconds vs tranqs 8) as a more minor cooldown.

The tranq only flourish extension doesnt feel like a reward, it feels like the slightest acknowledgement that our hots are too short, cause without it the entire engine of restoration falls apart when we’re channeling our biggest healing cooldown tanking whatever hps we had going.

Then bump rejuv up to 18 seconds when talented.
Make lifebloom pandemic up to 26.
Make rampant growth or clearcasted regrowths extend lifeblooms duration by 5 seconds when casted on the lifebloomed target.
Drop thriving to 1 point so we have 1 good rejuv talent in the spec tree.
Germ applying double rejuv for 75% more mana or giving its duration extension back.
Put cultivation back up to a scaling buff but capped at 5 so its 12% per rejuv up to 60% or make a viable alternative to it in pve; still voting for living seed back but triggering final blooms for some apex interactions.

A full apex rework away from the stack hots on 1 target (yourself), doing a bunch of overheal, to mastery buff aoe lifeblooms, but thats likely an next expansion thing.

im having a blast in Random Bgs (epics for sure) and World pvp though. Reminds me of the old days. Especially if you spec into moonkin, starsurge, elder druid, Dream of Cenarius. I stance dance with moonkin for some dps support, and i use that glyph that turns you into a ghost type and not that gawd awful owl beast thing. Anyway for PVP i like it.

Seems kind of annoying, rigid and arbitrary that you must have 5 rejuvs out to be able to heal well, but if you have 4 it completely falls off. The sliding scale it had before seemed more reasonable and flexible, but I don’t do much pve healing on druid so what do I know.

lol i dont either in pve, alls i know stealth heals in bgs is hella fun

The spec has really changed almost to the point of being the opposite of what it used to be. From TBC onward for over a decade it primarily healed with instant cast spells. The vast majority of your healing came from HoTs. Wild Growth was instant cast from WotLK until it was desecrated in WoD with a pointless cast-time. They did the same thing to Prayer of Mending, but they reverted that at some point back to instant. Rejuv was your main heal for probably 90% of expansions except TBC was all about lifebloom. Regrowth was hardly ever pressed in several expansions.

Direct heals were only used in an emergency or to proc the original mastery buff outside of maybe vanilla where everyone focused on boring downranked direct heal clones. You were an actual HoT healer and probably one of the most mana efficient classes in the game, especially during the perma tree expansions. You could HoT from dawn to dusk without running out of mana.

Maybe M+ style content and the very high burst damage and healing needed at times was the reason resto druid was transformed into more of a direct healing bot that used HoTs as buffs instead of a HoT healer. I feel like you could do dungeon healing design as a HoT healer, they just didn’t try. Regrowth could be more like Enveloping Mist, weighted towards the HoT and using the HoT as a buff to ramp up your other healing (which could be as easy as making it count as multiple mastery stacks). That way your single target focus would still be HoT healing.

Nature’s Bounty is an abomination that doesn’t belong in the druid kit at all. All your HoT healing has to be tuned down in order to tune around the existence of this direct healing mechanic. Even if you don’t spec into it, its existence is destroying the balance of the spec. It’s also just a clone of Whispering Waves, which they removed entirely from shaman in beta because they hated it so much. If they’re going to leave this in the kit, maybe it should be a choice talent against a talent that significantly improves HoTs. I’d just get rid of it personally.

I’m not sure Overgrowth moving lifebloom is of any benefit. I’d say it should apply independent lifeblooms but the interaction with convoke and everbloom would be broken unless they could just say only your primary lifebloom interacted with everbloom and lifetreading.

Abundance should obviously have just stayed a stacking mechanic even if it capped at 5 at 12% per. No idea how they could have gone through the PTR and all the feedback and concluded maintaining 5 was an improvement to the spec. It does literally nothing in solo/delve play now and now requires more specific tracking than it ever did before. It’s a major nerf in an emergency where you don’t already have 5+ up.

I’m confused as to what they intend with the KotG + dream + elder druid option. It has the highest DPS potential in AoE of any healer in the game, but the dream mechanic is so clumsy that you can’t rely on it actually keeping people alive in many situations. The potential HPS during your window is crazy high but it doesn’t prefer low-health targets like ancient teachings or way of the crane. A low health target can be skipped starfire after starfire and then when you finally give up on RNG and have to manually save them, you have no HoTs on them to swiftmend or buff regrowth. You can do over 100k DPS in AoE (sometimes 200+ if there’s enough mobs) and if you’re lucky easily keep the entire group topped during your starfire spam, but sometimes you have one person going down and a few getting minor injuries and the RNG keeps sinking all your healing into the people that don’t need it instead of that one person that’s dying. Not only is the healing itself a casino, but you’re falling behind on maintenance HoTs during the elder druid window which makes it hard to recover from unless you save convoke for bad dream RNG recovery.

Kittyweaving could easily be improved by suggestions that have been given for years. Instead it’s still a tab-target mess that does terrible damage for 10x the effort of any spec that actually does decent damage for a healer. This seems like massive wasted potential for a strong shapeshifter themed spec.

I agree that instant-cast heals are, and should always be, a strong point of our spec. But it’s not abnormal for Regrowth to have a relevant place in the toolkit. Back in WotLK Regrowth was actually our longest HoT. The main reason why it didn’t get used more wasn’t because it had a cast time, but because it was expensive. I stacked dual Solace of the Fallen trinkets (the 10-man and 25-man versions) which gave me a ton of mana regen and spammed Regrowth like crazy on most fights.

I don’t really remember how often I used regrowth in WotLK raiding but we also had revitalize at the time so rejuv/wg also had some value beyond healing. Blanketing the raid in rejuvs would have contributed to their resource generation in addition to your healing.

There was also the potential to use clearcasting procs on lifebloom to get mana back since it restored mana on blooms I think. I don’t recall how much I cared about that at the time, but that kind of interaction made lifebloom more interesting.

I think the current iteration of just having frequent GCDs going to re-applying it is kind of boring. If it’s going to be just one target with no stack or mana related mechanics it should just be a long duration buff like an ES or beacon to save us from the GCD maintenance. Only having to re-cast it to move efflo or add more single target healing to someone would be a decent QoL improvement at this point.

Beta i thought the stacking 3 times for the first apex node was boring and would have been better as a garunteed bloom/clearcast every 5 seconds or making lifebloom permanent if that was gonna be the apex’s big focus, but liked the nostalgia call back of the 3 stacks enough to mostly ignore it up to launch (and with the old 2 target cleave and functional VI it wouldnt have been nearly as impactful at the time)

Maybe they think itd be too strong cause you would get a near free lifebloom and actually free efflo forever if you dont need to move it, but with how important they want lifebloom to be it definitely needs better uptime managment and the first apex node would be a fine place to put it.

yea they had a good warwithin season 4 tier set for resto druid healing and now midnight rolls around and they went back to the basic hot hot hots healing and its horrible. Mana issues is bad….with really no emergency healing at all if you are not 3 steps ahead in healing.

Can I get a AMEN

I thought it was interesting that the top groups in the MDI both used dream/CotED resto druids. I assume mostly just because they are the top AoE damage healer in the game and have MotW.

For organized groups that are pulling very large groups and are all very rehearsed rather than dealing with the chaos of a pug or normal group I guess it makese sense. Dream is unreliable as a heal due to no low-health priority, but each individual enemy hit is a separate healing instance so you’re less likely to not heal someone at all when AoEing larger groups.

I still think they should change how it works so it works for the 99.9% of players that aren’t playing in super organized groups that practice their runs and know what everyone is doing if they’re going to keep the talents. If Dream just used the same priority system as ancient teachings it would be more reliable for everyone even when you aren’t pulling 20 mobs at once.

I tabled my resto druid for this patch.
