This is a secondary issue. Races in WoW are divided by faction lines. Almost all humans are part of Stormwind/Gilneas/Kul Tiras. Almost all night elves are Darnassian. Almost all dwarves are Ironforge. The existence of little side groups like the Defias mean nothing in the grand scheme of things.
So if a faction commits an atrocity like Teldrassil, it’s always going to be genocide. They aren’t just destroying a city, they’re specifically destroying a city made up almost entirely of night elves with a token worgen population. There’s no way to paint it as anything else.
So when the stakes are that high, and the crime is that severe, and then we get told stuff like “Tyrande got her revenge at Darkshore!” or read stuff about Tyrande becoming more and more ~crazy~ then it’s something that is hard to even conceptualize.
What vengeance (read: justice) matters if the people who committed it are protected by the plot / writers? What does vengeance itself even matter when the civilian lives lost are just a number used to prop up the story for the Horde?
It’s an impossible task, a corner that Blizzard wrote themselves into. Again. Teldrassil is either ignored / given a very limp-wristed act of “”“justice”"" or Tyrande becomes corrupted and LOST TO VENGEANCE because this is Warcraft.
The Horde burns x number of civilians to death.
The elves want justice.
Instead it’s written up as unreasonable, deranged vengeance.
The factions create yet another “peace”
The elves are now in the bad guy spotlight
The Horde who burned Teldrassil get to tsk-tsk at the elves for being so unreasonable
Considering he was Anduin’s mentor long before Genn entered the picture, I feel like Velen should have more influence in the Alliance story.
But I guess the guy who taught Anduin how to use the Light isn’t important at all, huh :/. Velen’s also a big voice for forgiveness, so he’d probably piss Tyrande off even more.
This is an eerie parallel with Jaina’s story, virtually step by step.
Sylvanas’ “You only seek peace when it suits you, little lion” is premium r/agedlikemilk material considering the fact the Horde only brays for peace when it’s on the cusp of being scattered to the wind or the constant spotlight teeters a little bit and shows the pile of moldy Dr. Pepper bottles and take out containers they’ve been keeping in the corners.
I agree.
I like to imagine Velen’s sitting somewhere on a beach in Azuremyst drinking fine chardonay. When a child comes up to him and asks “Grand Prophet Velen, I heard you helped destroy the Legion and revisited Argus; are you the best Eredar that has ever lived?”
Velen’s response would be succint: “Yes, now sod off.” As he goes back to enjoying his vacation.
I really don’t think so. It’s what Tyrande’s portrayal hinges on. Whether she gets revenge, or annihilation.
For real??
Yes? If she decides that any race belonging to a nation within the Horde has to be exterminated, that would be considered villainous. If she decides that all people directly responsible for Teldrassil should be killed, that would be reasonable and a positive portrayal, to me.
Okay, but how do you decide who’s directly responsible when the system and culture produce a population that commits genocide routinely on the whims of a lunatic?
Enekie please.
They are very sorry.
Let it go.
“for real?” as in I wrote all of that and you quoted a single phrase and nothing else.
There’s a council this time, now they’ll have to vote on what city to destroy next.
Well, I sure hope they remember this important lesson when Warchief Baine declares genocidal war on Ironforge because Muradin said he was fat or something.
There are non-violent methods to handling the Horde’s criminal actions. I firmly believe they should all be given the Premium Illidari Experience and get thrown in their nearest Warden prison.
If Altruis the Betrayer was wicked enough for the Wardens, Baine Bloodhoof, who only betrayed because Saurfang was sad, can go in there too.
Sorry? I felt it was the most important thing you said, in relation to my point.
… America?
And just like that, this thread has turned to curdled yogurt.
I know this is being flippant, but let’s examine the idea of a council being any sort of doorstop against future horrors.
Remember Thrall? Remember how he strove for peace? Remember how he implored the Horde to be better? Remember how beloved and popular he was?
Remember how he was replaced with a guy who said “ignore all that, go kill the Alliance” and the Horde said “you got it?”
Basically the council is a Vol’jin: a seat warmer for the next time Blizzard wants to tell a faction war story.
NO! It was a joke, I’m sorry. I wasn’t seriously trying to start something, 100% a joke lol
Right, so the problem with “punish the people responsible” is that Sylvanas is the one who is said to be solely responsible. Everyone else was, somehow, ignorant of her plans and okay with a “good war” but not this one for arbitrary reasons.
Who are the generals? Who are the officers? They’re all nameless mooks aside from people like Saurfang or Baine. It doesn’t feel satisfying, at all, to know that justice for Teldrassil involves killing unnamed NPCs or whatever in Darkshore. It’s not satisfying to know that Saurfang, who enabled all of this, got “reemeed” because he felt real bad and sacrificed himself.
