10.0.5 was given an 8h window, and had a lot more content than a glorified vendor kiosk players will visit 2-3 times per month.
So yes, 4h seems a bit much, but what do I know? I can barely open a browser.

Precisely. The “amount of content” has absolutely nothing to do with a patch deployment or the time it takes. It’s all about the nature of that content.
The difference is likely something like a database migration or service updates and testing to external apis or mobile applications, ie the armory.
Something else is that anytime blizzard would touch literally anything that deals directly with their dataset, they’d need to shut down the service and take backups after the fact before they can do anything else. WoW isn’t a game where the consumer will tolerate rollbacks to last nights live backups.
The reason it’s taking 4hrs is probably because they’re changing their database to track trading post stuff (ie currency) and append it to character data, so they’ll need to take a backup, then they’ll need to do a data migration, then they’ll need to take the compiled patch with the new assets and push it to all the various servers, and then you need to hard reset the application to take affect and then run through your various test suites to make sure everything is working. That is a highly more complex and involved process than doing a simple hotfix with interpreted code or variable imports that can be loaded dynamically, or something that runs entirely clientside.

That is why I always avoid the forums on anything resembling a patch/new feature/extended maintenance day. 
Maintenance is always longer when something is added in .
They could of easily done the normal 8 hours they do when adding stuff in but believe they can do the trading post in less time . To be honest they should just make it longer to play it safe and if it comes up sooner then great .
As for people wanting refunds . Every hour lost playing is $.02/hour so for 4 hours that is $.08 and $.016 for the occasional long maintenance days .
Do people also expect refunds for the hours you don’t play each day because of work/school or due to sleeping because you lose more money to Blizz due to those then you do from any form of maintenance down time .

I have to remember days leading up to as well as Tuesday maintenance days the Forum Karens come out demanding to talk to the manager and demand the refunds they will never get .
I’m surprised non of them have come out and said " WoW devs I know your CEO and will have you fired "

No they are fixing tons more bugs that are plaguing the game.

They should honestly take a full day scrap the trading post and fix the infinite bugs that keep coming and coming. I’ve never seen the game so scuffed.
