27” iMac as a monitor?

Hi there I currently have a 27 inch iMac late 2012 and right now I’m dealing with a constant Kernel task issue that I cannot resolve I have done clean installs of both high sierra and Mojave and I have replaced the hard drive etc. and at this rate I’m wanting to upgrade to a new computer so I am going to buy a custom built PC however with that said I would like to still be able to use the iMac as a monitor for this new computer i know Apple says this function is available just curious if this is doable or will I just run into my kernel task issues like I’m currently having

I cant thank you enough for posting this. I forgot this was a feature. Its going to help me set up my system/dual systems until I can save up to get my new mac next year!
