My case for why they should wipe all the names and try this again

I’m trying to keep this respectful and logical compared to many of the more emotional appeals and anger I’ve seen so far. I think any reasonable person by the end of this thread could agree the only fair response is to wipe the names and re-do name reservations with the bugs fixed, as drastic of a solution as that might seem.

To begin with and most importantly of anything is that this was not a typical “servers overloaded so you’re stuck in line in a queue” type type of problem like you get with an expansion release; there was clearly some sort of deeper bug going on. This was already readily apparent in the EU release hours before the NA release even dropped.

Most people were able to get through the queue in only a minute or so, it was when the server tried to log them in that they got disconnected and had to start all over. So this was not at all a case of “first come first serve.”

For example:
I tried logging in at 1:01 1 minute after it released, and spent almost an hour trying to get in.
My friend who got on late from the gym and tried to login at 1:07 got in immediately and was able to make their names immediately without any issue.

In a fair system everyone who was ready to go, on early, and trying to login at 1:00 would be competing at roughly the same times to get our names. Obviously it wouldn’t be perfect as connection speeds and such vary, but it would still be pretty close.

The average person would maybe get 1-2 of their 3 chosen names, and be roughly satisfied they had a fair chance, even though they didn’t get 1 or 2 of their names.

Instead what we got today is a few lucky people got 3 out of 3 and had much less competition for doing so since the majority was sidelined with the bugs in the server keeping them out, and a bunch of unlucky people who did get sidelined with the bug got 0 out of 3.

The only proper, fair, and decent thing for Blizzard to do is identify and fix the bug that caused this and then re-do name releases with all the current names wiped.

TL;DR: Name reservations are not supposed to be “RNG based” it’s supposed to be first come, first serve. Wipe names and redo this properly.

While I absolutely understand your position and don’t disagree they miss handled this and many other situations. They will never do this.

And many people are probably locked out of the faction they want to play with their friends, which seems to be an even bigger issue than a name.

Well, to be honest. Doing it once is the most fair way to go about it.

Cause resetting it is just rerolling the people that passed the RNG dice roll of logging in.

Not true, if it was just the usual long queue and tons of people trying to get in, I’d agree with you. But that isn’t what happened today, there was a bug unique to this specific launch clearly affecting people, one that was possibly based on which region you live in.

It sounds and looks like every single release so far to me. We will see in 8 days if this was unique.

It took me three hours of frustration and anger but I stuck with it and it eventually paid off. Im not about to do that again.

Anyone not picking a cheesy meme name or edgelord name would get their chosen name 6 years from now. Literally EVERYONE I KNOW who plays wow got 3/3 of their names, and would have if they had made their characters at launch. We all just made them today since it was included with the Skyborne pack and we figured we’d all just make them to ensure we get on the same PVP faction.

Dude, I feel you, I didn’t get most of what I wanted. But if you had gotten your names, you wouldn’t have made this post. Be honest.

They’re not going to wipe everything and go again. There’s no guarantee it’d go better the second time and they’d have to gin up and test this new method within the next couple of days in order to allow people who paid for the beta pre-order to still get their “early name RSVP” value in, or get sued to oblivion by EU residents. There are folks who rearranged their days and already spent a bunch of time today trying to get names and might not be able to do it again next or whenever they stage the second round. Wiping it for them affects them as equally as you.

I empathize, but it’s just very very unlikely.

Summing up how I feel about these, wipe the names posts.

So, it’s only fair if you get your character but others won’t? What if someone got their name earlier but if they wipe again, and the person wasn’t there or another clogged server happen and they didn’t get their name, but you did. it’s fair?

If they did wipe, which they won’t. The same thing is going to happen and the servers are going to get clogged. It’s not something they can solve. It’s like sucking a lemon through a straw. No amount of technically is going to solve clogged servers.

Life is many things. Fair is not one of them.

I Definitely do not think name wiping is fair, nor would it ever be.

You are better off asking Blizzard to delete the characters of people who stole your names because you are the only person in the world allowed to have them.

What names were you even trying to reserve? any name based off a Class skill was going to be competitive… There is 1 name only per all rulesets so for example there will only be 1 Frost Bolt if they are on PvE then no one on PVP or RP can make the name either.

I don’t think I’m the only person who deserves to have them. But if I and someone else are competing for the same name at 3:00pm, but because of a bug that is entirely Blizzard’s fault and not my own I can’t get in the game and they can, that’s not fair.

If it was a matter of me being slower to log in and type the name in then they were, I got behind them in queue, etc that would be acceptable and I wouldn’t mind losing the names.

But the way it happened was not that, it was due to a bug, where people were totally favored at random, even if they tried to log in 30 mins after the time, they still were able to beat people logging in 30 mins before them. That is not fair at all.

Sounds fair to me. I am sorry you drew the short straw.

When we play the game and were on a layer with all the speed runners and someone else is on another layer having the time of their life with no contest spawns getting levels ahead will we be calling for a server wipe as well?

Got all three names that I used on the beta just fine.

If you feel this strongly about it, then you should be pursuing a refund. Not a name wipe, which would be even more unfair.

RNG never smiles on me this hard. Don’t take this away from me. I love my 3 names.

I got my names, I waitied in line, I got LUCKY with my packets.

I’m sorry if you didn’t but crying for a ‘redo’ is preposterous.

Absolutely not. I love how you tried to strawman that anyone who disagrees is unreasonable.

Counter argument: I did nothing wrong. I sat there and clicked over and over for just shy of an hour. I got my names. Why should I be penalized? I’d love for you to tell me, what I did to deserve being wiped and penalized. Go ahead and “reasonably” tell me why I should accept that.

I really wanted Johnny Silverhand. I was there right on time, but I kept getting disconnected. People I know were getting in, but not me. Just unlucky, I guess. I ended up going with my backup name. That being said, what about the name is “cheesey meme” or “edgelord”? It’s a name of a very popular character played by a very popular actor, and the name fits WoW lore so perfect it hurts. A Paladin named Johnny Silverhand would, just the nature of being a Paladin, be a member of the Knights of the Silver Hand. Some people just want to throw insults for the sake of throwing insults.

People who randomly get paid 100,000s in tax refund errors are still expected to pay it back.
Just because you were one of the lucky ones does not mean you fairly received the name.
You got the name partially at least because a huge chunk of your competition was unfairly sidelined.
Don’t try and tell me you got anything fairly, you didn’t.
If you still manage to get the name while on an even playing field with everyone else (at least in terms of things on blizzards end), then yes, you fairly got it, but that isn’t what happened.
