I’ve noticed that if I make a character with a specific name on one ruleset, I can’t use that specific name again on another ruleset. It tells me that name is taken. In the original WoW Forever name rules news post it says that a name has to be unique within a region, but it made it sound like it was a restriction within the given ruleset (where people recognize your name, etc.). Obviously people in PVE can’t see my name in PVP if it’s exclusive there, so I assumed ruleset wouldn’t affect it.
Does anyone know if there’s a clarifying post/site for the requirements? I was just hoping to have the same character name across a couple servers.
I don’t think there’s anything official on it, and I’d assume you could use the same name on multiple rulesets, although I did hear that all rulesets will share battlegrounds, so perhaps it has to do with that? As if you had Leeroy Jenkins on PvE and I had Leeroy Jenkins on PvP, it might run into trouble in the unlikely event we got matched up against/with each other in battlegrounds. So maybe they only allow the name once across all rulesets? Which seems a bit overkill for something that’s far more unlikely to happen than one person using the same name for themselves on different rulesets.
I think it would be reasonable for the same account to hold the same name on multiple rulesets, if battlegrounds are one of the sticking points. I can only log in with one at a time, so that seems like it would be a fair solution.
Is there an official resource where they make that completely clear? The original news post says your name is unique across the region, but it doesn’t clarify whether that’s within rulesets or not. Since I can’t have the same name across multiple rulesets it seems as though that’s the way it is, but having the rules in one place where I could read them all in some detail would be nice.
I don’t know where I saw it either, but I believe Erase is correct. Perhaps it was said during one of the podcasts or during Blizzcon or something, but it was definitely “officially” said somewhere. Let me see if I can dig it up.
Edit: I found it, here:
Because World of Warcraft: Forever is built around a larger, realmless structure, character names are handled at a larger scale. Your full character name needs to be distinct within your region, rather than only within a single realm, supporting a world where more players can adventure together while names remain recognizable over time.
Probably done this way on purpose. If they need to merge servers later, they won’t need to force any renames. Additionally, if someone is reported or shows up in a screen shot or video doing something bad, there won’t be any chance of a mix up and false accusations.
I made an assumption based on what I read and it ended up being wrong. I’m okay with that. All I’m saying is that a natural follow up is to clarify whether or not that’s within rulesets or not, since they intuitively don’t cross-pollinate. I hadn’t considered battlegrounds pooling everyone, which is a fine reason to not have it.
