There seems to be a lot of confusion, especially among people who don’t play Tauren. So, if you haven’t tested Tauren during the beta, I’d like to explain how the racial actually works to clear up some of the confusion.
To gain movement speed, you need to keep moving continuously to build up stacks, without interruptions, running into objects, or getting hit. Anything like getting hit by a mob, taking DoT damage, stopping to talk to a vendor, stopping to cast a spell, or simply running into a wall causes you to lose stacks very quickly.
To reach maximum speed, you used to run for two and a half minutes without stopping or getting hit once (about 150 seconds now). As you can imagine, this is mostly useful on roads. It’s practically useless in cities, where you constantly need to stop, and in any combat - PvE or PvP, where you either get hit or have to stop to cast something.
For example, to gain a barely noticeable 6% movement speed bonus, you will need about 15 seconds of uninterrupted running. You might think hunters could use this to kite, but extensive testing during beta world PvP and thousands of duels during the tournament and its preparation proved otherwise.
Now, let’s get to the more important part: Tauren have lost their 1% hit chance bonus earlier, which was replaced by damage or crit bonus - and now it’s also gone. Tauren now is the only race with no damage increase or other offensive modifier whatsoever.
Once you get a mount, the movement speed racial becomes largely useless anyway. No raid use, almost no use in battlegrounds and duels.
At this point, it’s basically a meme utility, mostly useful during early leveling for longer runs, like traveling from Mulgore to Durotar for class quests or unlocking the flight path in Orgrimmar. Beyond that, it quickly loses its usefulness with levels.
People who call this “OP” probably won’t roll Tauren because of it. You won’t see a significant number of players who choose races for their racial abilities picking Tauren for this one. Voting with your feet (or hooves) speaks far louder than words.
I’ll keep playing Tauren even if they remove all their racials, but this is still quite disappointing.
