Well, I give up - it’s totally fine to sell this add-on. This thread ultimately encouraged me to quit the game. Have fun everyone, I hope they don’t start selling DPS meters next for your sake.
They’re probably okay with the leveling guide company, or the company probably has a good working relationship with blizzard.
sometimes it’s in the connections you make, and the way you do things. respect probably goes a long way, which is probably why private servers have problems.
anyway, that’s my assumption if it’s being advertised in official events and stuff.
Because it’s not a paid addon. Blizzard has said it is not against TOS.
The addon is free. You’re buying a guide and loading it in a free addon. A questionable loophole? Sure. Against TOS? Nope.
It is free for levels 1-30. You can then purchase levels 31-60 for $45.00.
It is RMT.
i assume the only reason this is valid is because blizz believes someone could put a free guide that competes against it into the addon. but has anyone done that? and have the addon group tried to make it so it wouldnt work (like changing the api)
I guess you struggle with reading comprehension.
Are you saying that since the initial download is free, it becomes legal to profit off of Blizzard’s IP?
This is the breaking the same rule that buying gold is.
I’m saying that the addon is free. You’re paying for a guide. The addon reads that guide. Blizzard has said this doesn’t break TOS.
not sure at all what this has to do with gold buying. Gold buying is RMT because you are purchasing game currency with real money. Paying for a leveling guide is not an in-game item or service. There’s no difference between buying a Zygor guide and going to your local Wal-Mart and buying a guide book. The addon simply displays the content of the guide for you.
You’re free to disagree of course, and I do think it’s a bit of a grey area, but Blizzard has stated that this does not break TOS.

What I am referencing:
1) Add-ons must be free of charge.
**All add-ons must be distributed free of charge. Developers may not create “premium” versions of add-ons with additional for-pay features, charge money to download an add-on, charge for services related to the add-on, or otherwise require some form of monetary compensation to download or access an add-on.

So, are only Streamers allowed to promote paid, 3rd party services for WoW? Who else is allowed to do this?
So the short answer to this question is: You aren’t paying for the addon.
And, no, you also aren’t paying for part of it, or a feature of it, or an expansion of it.
When you download RestedXP or this new addon, the addon is fully functional and doing exactly what its supposed to do: Read a text file and display that information on screen.
That’s all the addon is programmed to do. Nothing more. So you don’t unlock additional functionality or features by paying for anything. You have the addon for free and its at 100% effectiveness.
YOU ARE PAYING FOR A TEXT FILE
You are paying for the hours and hours that someone took to go through the world, discover every single quest and spawn point and rare and then compile that all into a leveling guide. THAT is what you are paying for.
And that is not against the TOS
This has been happening since 2004. People making leveling guides. Its just evolved from a browser on your 2nd monitor to an addon in game that displays that same information.
If Blizzard, this multi billion dollar company with its team of lawyers really had a problem with it, they would have closed that loophole a long, long time ago.
But they didn’t, because they are okay with it. And if they are, you should be as well. Its their rules.
You aren’t paying for the addon. The addon is free. This is why it doesn’t break ToS. Blizzard has said as much.
/thread
It’s 100% against the rules. The text file you’re using was paid for.
So when you buy gold, and it’s moved from the gold seller’s inventory to yours - that gold moved from 1 database to another. From a text file.
This is the same thing - using your example.
well report it to the devs then… the same devs who also use it…
Wait, Blizzard Devs use paid add ons?
I posted the exact rule that articulates that this is 100% against the ToS.
How is this not a bigger deal with the community?
You’re allowed to buy a guide, that’s not against ToS. Just because you want something to be true, doesn’t make it so. Move on.
So, are you willing to admin, at least, that in order to use the addon past level 30, I need to pay a 3rd party to get that information added into the mod?
Let me get in on that download!
ZOOM ZOOM BABY!!!
At this point you’re arguing in bad faith. You’ve been given the reason it’s allowed and yet you still want to try to argue. You’re wrong. Your inability to understand why you’re wrong isn’t my problem.
The gold is not the same thing for a few reasons.
-
They have explicitly said that this isn’t allowed. In exact words
-
When I say you are paying for a text file, I mean that quite literally. I use RestedXP and I just checked my downloads folder. You literally download a .TXT file that you import into the addon. The addon is just a reader for that text file, nothing more.
So, again, you aren’t paying for an addon. You are paying for a leveling guide. Its just evolved from being on a browser to being displayed in the game.
You’re reconstructing what the truth is into something it isn’t.
You can’t utilize all the features of the mod without paying the 3rd party.
The 3rd party is not Blizzard. They do not have the legal right to sell anything with their name on it, and profit.

This is from the game’s Terms of Service. I am not even arguing - I am re-explaing, in different ways, what the above says - which is from Blizzard, and not my opinion.
