So many people have asked for RP-PVP, and it seems reasonable, but also seems like Blizzard isn’t planning on doing it.
So rather than echo the ask for an RP-PVP ruleset, I would suggest a special PVP warmode on the RP server, that layers you with other people. What would be different than the usual modes, is that you have to activate it in town, ahead of time, and that it lasts for a minimum of 24 hrs and persists through death.
The biggest problem with having the “just flag for pvp” is that it’s not spontaneous and people can just avoid it whenever. It shouldn’t be something that drops after 5 minutes, or can be toggled off easily. If you want to go out and do world pvp, it needs to have a certain amount of commitment or it’ll just be pointless.
It would also add the draw of being a different layer, so you wouldn’t have to compete with standard RP people out in the world: you would only see other RP-PVP’ers.
It might also need to be done at a lower level or something, and once you turn it off there is some penalty (not stat-penalty) prohibiting you from rejoining PVP for a period of time. It’d need a similar, though not exactly the same dynamic, of not being able to transfer to a PVP server from a PVE server.
Workable?

I’ve seen plenty of asks here on the forums, and in the game world wanting rp-pvp. Certainly enough to entertain the thought.
Though, whether or not there is enough to meet your own personal requirements, is a different issue than whether or not an extended/special warmode would be good enough to worth implementing?

Part of the greatness of RP-PVP is going out into the world with no intention of PVPing. Then you come across a small fight and decide to join in. Soon the fight ballons into a huge zone battle pushing back and forth. If they do warmode, people will most likely choose the path of least resistance and just not toggle warmode.
Overall it hurts community. Just look at retail. Warmode killed most, if not all of the RP-PVP communities that thrived for a decade plus.

Over 2k individual posters is certainly a lot for the forums, considering no other posts even come close with what they are asking for.

If you wanted to do an RP-PVP server, would you really choose the path of least resistance like that? Considering my suggestion was a lengthy warmode toggle, for an extended period of time. Yes you’d have to opt-in, since it’s a RP ruleset by default, but if the toggle was fixed for at least a day, then once you were in PVP mode it’d be active for awhile. If you wanted RP-PVP, would you really just go unflagged rather than risk world pvp? Would seem that incidental pvp in the world is the reason you would do an rp-pvp ruleset to start, right?
If you have a pvp ruleset and a Rp ruleset w/ warmode, best case scenario you’d get half the RP-PVPers on the RP ruleset w/ warmode, while the other half would just roll on the PVP server to have guaranteed pvp 24/7. Out of the half that roll Rp ruleset, at any given time that number would be even smaller with people who maybe don’t opt in that day or week. You would not have enough people to fill the zones and have the organic pvp that makes RP-PVP servers great.
We have the numbers to have a healthy megaserver, but not enough to divide us up a bunch of times. Most RP-PVPers are PvPers first, RPers second. They will go where they can get the most action.
yes this seems like a fair compromise
give the RP realm some kind of recurring PvP event
Just have a NPC in each city… you go to that NPC and sign up for a say week duty… and during that time you are flagged for pvp… you could also allow you to enter a special channel for enlisted personal on duty…

I will be joining the RP server and my character will never turn off the PVP flag. Will be looking for likeminded players/guilds.

You should read my last post. It won’t work. And even if it could work where you had an entire server worth of people flagged for pvp, one section of the playerbase (PVEers) have a substantially easier time making gold. It’s just bad design and we have all the evidence we need to see on retail.
Alittle confused to why you are playing ?.. i dident think pvp was about making gold, and gold was why it was fun… regardless, yes its true pveers will most likely make more gold, as thats their main currency…
As a pvpers, your main currency will be honor, wich you can use to by stuff gold cant ?.. and as pvp flagged, i asume you will layer with other pvp flagged, so you can enjoy what you want to do, ie pvp… so i have alittle trouble to see where it becomes a problem that pveers earn more gold, as your likely no going to see them, ie their on difrent layers…
We will share AH, i can only hope that costs of consumes wont be such a issue ?.. but maybe honor / medals can be traded in for gold / consumes… not a experat pvper but i recal there was plenty of consumes you could buy with pvp stuff…
That retail has failed on so many levels, thats on Retail… This is forever, and it ultimatly comes down to making it work, i mean by what you say, Forever will fail regardless what they do, cause retail as a whole failed, is this your argument ?.. If there is a will there is a way !
You don’t think PVPers need gold for professions, enchants, consumes, mounts, etc? You don’t think PVPers enjoy other aspects of the game? Come on now, don’t be dumb.
Blizzard isn’t going to make honor exchangeable for gold. Your idea is spiraling into a bunch of more work Blizzard has to do to make it viable when they could just add the RP-PVP ruleset and everyone would be happy.
you will have to earn gold regardless, just cause there is pure pveers, doest stop you from earning gold… in fact you could even argue that their prensence will make prices lower as they produce more…
and as for “work” pvp have to be fairly standalone by it self, so again its sorta of a catch 22, if you cant earn gold from pvp then you will have to pve regardless, so what the difrence that there is pveers ?..
Do you see how your argument did a complete 180 from one post to the next? You constantly have to jump through hoops to make these alternative ideas work when they could just add the RP-PVP ruleset, which hurts no one and helps many.

Well, Blizz said they wouldent, cause they want ONE mega server of each type, they dont want two pvp servers… so i and others are taking up alternatives, that could work… keep doing you, all im saying is, clock is ticking, and you risk getting nothing !
I won’t get nothing. I’ll still roll on the PVP server and play for at least a while. But it won’t be as fun compared to having RP-PVP be it’s own thing, and if it isn’t as fun I probably won’t play as long meaning less revenue for Blizzard.
Anyways, warmode is a bad idea and I’m not gonna bump this thread anymore. Goodluck.
No, thank you. You are welcome to flag up and run around on my RP server, though.
naw as a RP pvper my main currency is the tears of my enemy. The war isnt won until the opposite faction has quit the game. economic warfare is part of that goal. Now ill just have to bully lowbies on the nonRP server which isnt fun for anyone.
so… you want to roleplay pvp, with the main goal to remove the people you want to roleplay against, sounds like your end goal is pve ?
