We finally had a way to extend Mind Flay’s range to 30 yards. It came with the tradeoff of a reduced slow effect, but for those of us who primarily play PvE, the ability to cast Mind Flay from the same range as the rest of our toolkit felt fantastic.
The new talent seems designed to encourage standing still and channeling the entire Mind Flay rather than clipping it, which I assume is the intent. That’s fine, and I can see the reasoning behind it. However, we’re now back to the awkward situation where Mind Flay requires us to stand at 24 yards while the rest of our spells reach 36 yards.
Could the range talent, or perhaps another talent, be adjusted to restore the Mind Flay range increase? It would be great for players who enjoyed having Mind Flay better align with the range of the rest of our spells.
While we’re on the subject, Dark Inspiration feels like a clunky solution to the other issue Shadow faces: our lack of utility. More importantly, I think it’s trying to solve that problem in the wrong way. Spirit-based mana regeneration simply isn’t valuable to many classes.
A better approach would be to look at how Wrath implemented Vampiric Touch. Consider making VT a talent alongside Vampiric Embrace, reducing VE’s effect and tying it passively to VT instead. VT would become the actual talent, and its effect could trigger when the target is hit by Mind Blast or a fully channeled Mind Flay.
More broadly, Shadow needs at least two standard DoTs to maintain. Having a third DoT on a cooldown is perfectly fine, but the spec feels incomplete when it’s built around only one regularly maintained DoT.
As a warlock, first time? Welcome to our world. Also. You mean in wotlk and tbc you DIDN’T get a raid slot specifically to be put in a healer group, the main users of spirit, to mana battery them? It was a heck of a lot better than before where it was some bonus healing. It now garuntees you a raid spot pretty much even if your dps is mid.
im not an spriest main, but i agree…so now you want an spriest for balance/resto druid and any mage that talented into regen during casting…did i miss anything? cuz if thats it, thats hardly a big enough buff. they should have just stuck with the tried and true TBC talent. We always wanted 1 spriest, but if we couldnt find one, we were still good to go. I was thinking of swapping my warlock main out for an spriest this go around, but not anymore lol
what he means is, the tbc version was flat mana return, this is spirit. only certain specs can actually make good enough use of the talent. Which, dont get me wrong, is still WAY better than nothing at all, but if I was putting a raid together if i was worried about my resto druid mana or mage mana…thats about it. I could be forgetting a spec here though, i cant remember who else gets X mana while casting talents anymore, my mind is all jumbled through all the classic servers ive been on
Flat Mana would be better I agree. But baby steps here this is blizzard. If you’re not mage or warrior it takes em time for their brains to click. The fact spriest at least has a reason to be in some raids now is better than before where their existence was literally pointless. I don’t mind healing. I do like being able to switch it up as shadow is great on PvP. And mind controls probably the most fun you can have trolling people.
Also disc priests has a talent for mana regen while casting.
I have no idea why they reverted the range on flay. The talent was perfectly fine before. I get what they did to incentivize casting a full mind flay but now not only do we lose the range on flay which is crazy we now are penalized if we have to cancel a mf on the first tick to move for PvP or raid encounters
This basically classes now scale off spirit for mana regen. Most classes also have a talent for regen while casting to some extent. And they can always stop casting for 5 seconds to get the full benefit anyway.
I’ll second that the range increase being removed hurts a lot . Even Fire blast which was 20 yard range, is getting 8/15 yard range as part of its improved talent now. the aff lock equivalent to mind flay (filler spell) is also 30 yards base line.
Are you too afraid of the range being on there with the slow? its not like we can move while we channel it. A warlock can cast curse of exhaustion (30%, so a little weaker), but continue to move and kite, which makes up for the 20% difference and then some.
This sincerely is a tragic nerf. The shorter Mind Flay range always felt so awful and clunky.
I’m mostly a Holy priest healer, but I was definitely excited to have shadow on my dual-spec when I saw the increased mind flay range. Now I may not even bother with it.
Mind flay range one of my biggest gripes about shadowpriest in classic, they finally had a good update to it, and then now it’s reverted back to having the main issue it always had.
Disappointing for sure. There’s no excuse to not have kept the range component while adjusting the damage component.
So how about a change in being able to log in and find the characters I created? There are NONE. I had a Druid lvl 17? I just get DC’d over and over. Nothing I do… uninstall game/reinstall game does anything to fix this. I WAS NOT told I was banned in anyway… this is just terrible programming, service, … or is my account targeted ?
NO all my other characters are fine on. I don’t even know what that means? Beta is not working and hasn’t for weeks now. I have NEVER done beta til now and thinking I had to buy the ‘pregame’… I did. I am so regretting it! ..
I have been playing for decades … and I’m NOT stupid.
It was outdated and awful having mindflay at 24 yards. All our other abilities are 36 yards. It makes 0 sense to have flay at 24 yards. Awful change by blizzard reverting it
It seems like Blizz did it again. Forgot to add “make no mistakes” to the end of the prompt.
Jokes aside it’s an overall nerf in damage at 2 ticks and range. I 100% understood the tradeoff with reduced slow at longer range and was fine. Now it is somehow more useless unless you tick 3 for the rounding error in damage and mana regen.
I’m actually baffled Blizz pulled out the Mana battery with so many people not caring for that mechanic when so many agreed on different fixes.
I guess here’s hoping range at least gets added back in the near future for my Shadowy friends.
It actually brought he damage inline and range especially for pvp… there are very little to no instances where you are channeling back to back full mindflays in a pvp setting this is a huge nerf. I’m sure it will be a buff on ourselves as well just another thing to be purged/dispel’d off of us instantly lol.
technically, it is ~4 more damage, per 100 base tick damage on a full channel versus the previous change, and a 20 damage nerf, per 100 base tick damage, for any MF2, compared to the prior model, so we are instead penalized for clipping by comparison to the prior model, and of course the massive nerf to range.
