Went back to ConsolePort: Gamepad Feedback

I tried using the gamepad mode for most of the beta, but after playing with it awhile I ended up going back to consoleport addon. There are some things I like better with the official UI but there are too many things that either don’t work or work better in the addon. For example, interacting with NPCs and accepting quests is easier with the official UI, but that’s about where the benefits end.

Listing the reasons why I went back to the addon in hopes that dev team can make improvements to the official UI so I don’t need the addon anymore:

  1. Most addons don’t work with gamepad UI. When I try to play with addons in gamepad mode, the game just hangs up and gives errors. It seems like there’s something fundamentally different about the gamepad UI that causes addons to not work properly. This is preventing me from setting up the UI how I would like it to be. Since the consoleport addon just modifies the default UI, there is no problem and other addons are working fine with it.
  2. I can’t customize the hotbar bindings as much as I can with the addon. There are several bindings that can’t be changed with the official UI, but ConsolePort allows full rebinding of all buttons. This includes targeting, jump, etc. For example, I can bind combat actions to left and right bumper and targeting to face buttons on consoleport, this is not possible with official UI.
  3. There are multiple extra bars that don’t work in the official UI. For example, totem bar, pet bar, or all additional bars. I would like to enable additional hotbars in the gamepad mode. There are some abilities or items that are used infrequently and I would rather just put those items on a hotbar to the side and use the mouse to click those abilities to save space on the gamepad hotbars. I mostly just want combat and movement abilities bound to the gamepad buttons. Menus and other tasks that aren’t time sensitive I will just use the mouse.
  4. Cosmetic options. Consoleport offers ways to visually customize the gamepad buttons. This includes full control of position of all buttons, resizing, etc. There is even an option to add class artwork to add aesthetic flavor to my bars that I enjoy having. The official gamepad hotbars could use some artwork to make them look more visually appealing.

Hope devs can work on fixing these things with the gamepad UI, until then I will continue using the ConsolePort addon.

I’m a minimalist when it comes to add-ons, and I was really hoping that the built in game pad support would be enough for me. I use an Xbox elite controller and my biggest hurdle is no seperate support for the back buttons. I also use Spoken and I’ve been getting randomize Lua errors that seem to be caused somehow by the gamepad support. I do like that everything is easier to navigate in game with the controller, but I spend more time playing than I do in menus, so for now I’m going back to consoleport.

That said, for new players, I highly recommend just using the built in gamepad support. It’s very easy and streamlined unless you’re an advanced or seasoned player, you won’t need everything avaliable in consoles port.

Oh, I also tried out controller forever addon. It was a helpful edition, but it shoots out a lot of errors as well.
