Leatherworking is still an awful choice for spellcasters in early levels

  • Gear of the same tier has disproportionately rare mats

  • The gear itself is much more sparse, and learning to make it requires world drops and quests, available to only one faction

    Example A: The level 10 blue item that production professions can make at 35 skill,
    For leatherworking, it’s boots. All these require the baseline of 12 light leather and 2 cured light hides

    Dark Leather Boots: +4 Stamina, +4 Agility – +12 more light leather required and gray dye. Gray dye is 3s 63c and is purchasable from trade good vendors, tailoring vendors, leather working vendors. It’s 12 more light leather, but you’ll probably get those anyways while skinning for light hides.

    Black Whelp Slippers: +4 Intellect, +9 Healing +3 spell damage – Black Whelp Scale x2. Only skinned from Black Dragon Whelp, a level 17-18 mob only found in redridge. horde btfo

    Moonglow Boots: +4 Stam, +5 Spellpower – Small Lustrous Pearl, most likely would need to purchase this from another player if you dont want to farm mobs that can drop clams, and then RNG the clams until a pearl drops. Or clam diving in Westfall, Darkshore, Ashenvale, or the Barrens.

The next caster items they can create are at skill 50, which are embossed leather pants and boots. Both are +2 stam, +3 spell damage. a total of +4 stamina and +6 spell damage so far if they didn’t manage to get the caster boots from skill 35.

Compare that to someone going just for feral and enhance gear,
at skill 50 (45 needed), they’d have

Light Leather Bracers, +1 Str, +1 Agi
Embossed Leather Cloak, +1 agi
Handstitched Leather Vest,+1 agi
Handstiched Leather Belt, +1 Str
Handsitched Leather Pants, +1 Agi
Dark Leather Boots, +4stam, +4 agi (Yes, i’m including these in the comparison because they’re incredibly easy to make)

+2 str, +8 agi, +4 stam

Example A.2
Stormriders (Int and Spellpower) vs Brawlers (Stam, Str, Agi) – The recipe’s from the new trade faction.

Stormrider’s gear all requires cerulean dye(s), which is currently going for 2g94s on the PVP AH alliance side, brawlers requires shadowgem(s) which are going for 2s68c..

Example B: Quests and World Drops

  • Moonglow Vest - Quest Reward alliance only, needs over 70 leather worth of crafted goods, requires small lustrous pearl to create
  • Fine Leather Gloves - World Drop
  • Hillman’s leather vest - world drop
  • Black Whelp Cloak and Chest - Alliance only vendor

it keeps going like this, I’ve written enough to get the point across.

TL;DR Just have a guildie make mystic armor kits for you.

Totally agree on this. Another example is cloaks and belts. The first caster skewed cloak is at level 25 vs three others prior with agi/stam prior to level 25. The availability (or lack of) is another one for which there’s no caster options.
