I am so sick of getting phased. Invite someone to group? Phased. Someone invites you? Phase. Someone leaves your group? Phased. You leave someone else’s group? Phased.
I’m in a cave, fortress, quarry, etc. There’s a boss at the end. I clear all the trash out, and then a friendly runs in behind me, presumably for the boss. I invite them so we can both get credit… and then EVERYTHING I JUST KILLED RESPAWNS. And now the two of us are fighting three mobs + boss. This isn’t Elden Ring. It is ridiculous.
I don’t say this to be dramatic, and I’m not exaggerating, this is complete sincerity: If I don’t have the option to BLOCK PHASING from happening to me, I’m not going to play once this goes live. I DON’T WANT THIS. Leave me in shard with 99% allies. Leave me in a share with 99% enemies. Leave me in a shard with 2 other players. Leave me in a shard with 1,000 other players. I don’t care. Just let me play the massively multiplayer online game.
JUST. STOP. PHASING. ME. I would rather go grind out Shadowlands rep than continue playing like this! This isn’t an MMO anymore, this tech is more anti-social than LFG in retail! And it’s just as bad watching others get phased. When people are constantly coming in and out of existence, I don’t really care to talk to anyone with /say, they’ll be gone in 30 seconds anyway. Why bother chatting? Why bother interacting at all?

yes ive declined grp invited for cave bosses a few times now because i know it will phase us 100% and i dont have time to sit there and explain to this dude why i dont want to invite him because he might not understand the layers so i just look like an ahole and try to beat the tag. these small cave hyperspawns are bad enough to sometimes get to the quest mob in the back let alone be phased magically into a fully spawned cave in the back
Edit: im not going to quit over it, but it isnt fun for a few quests where spawns are dense and quarters are tight

Sharding is a shame. It completely breaks immersion and feels janky at times.

I’ve been phased leaving a group while doing an escort quest. escort gone with the layer

Yeah that blows.
This was mentioned in the first podcast. At least they’re aware of the issue and hopefully fixed in an upcoming build.

What exactly did they say? Are they going to stop people that I’m talking to in /say from randomly disappearing? It was poppin in XRoads, duels everywhere. Everyone was watching each other, “my CDs weren’t up”, (lol), “you resisted my fear, I would’ve won!”. Y’know… SOCIALIZING.
And then we get the warning that we’re refreshing in 5 minutes. “Five more minutes, then NO MORE SERENDIPITOUS INTERACTIONS FOR YOU!”
I don’t see how they can “fix” this. They’d have to tear down the entire thing, and give us SERVERS back again. Until there’s a guarantee that my social interactions aren’t going to be ripped from me halfway through… I feel like I’m better off just muting all chat and pretending it’s a single player game.

That they know it sucks and they need to figure something out basically. LOL

I was adventuring on my priest when I happened across a druid bearform tanking 4 murlocs at 20% health dropping fast.
I started throwing heals on them to be nice, and around 50% health to be nice they threw me an invite, but I wasn’t on the quest and didn’t want to take their mob loots, so I declined the invite.
Because I declined, the druid bear phased.
In the center of a Murloc camp that usually has 6 spawns. at ~50% health.
I felt so bad. I hope they survived.

Omg… Alright, add “declining a group invite” to the list, holy asterisking hell…

IMO if you are in the zone and have been in that zones layer you should stay there until you leave.
Any new players joining that map get a new layer but the players who where there should not get moved to a new layer for any reason.

It really can’t even be a zone thing. Otherwise PvPers will just “zone dance” whenever they start losing.
Any automatic shard balancing is antithetical to their supposed “pillars” for this game. Once a player is on a shard, they should stay on that shard until they log off, or join a group. Balancing should only be done with new logins, not players already logged in.

I’ve had it happen, and I hope it’s something they work out before launch. If people are standing together in the same layer, and they group, they shouldn’t phase.
As an aside I’d also add that given this dynamic nature of layering (spinning them up and down based on capacity), I’d love for them to lower the threshold significantly.
Part of the feel of the world as a character is that some places should have a slight remote quality to them. Not have 200 players running around.

My thought to a solution would be a 5 minute warning timer, which we’ve already seen. Or, a “would you like to” button? What’s your thoughts on a solution?
-Id like to list off all the situations I’ve been phased and been like “Wtf?” but no one has that attention span.

I’ve already been doing this.

This is the solution. If I don’t WANT to phase, I should NEVER be forced to do so.

If people continue to experience friction that is arbitrary like the layering, they won’t continue to play. I’m fine with challenges that need to be overcome like killing a tough elite enemy or having to travel the world to do some epic quest chain. I’m ok with poor drop rates on zhivras’ hooves even. Rare spawns give you something to chase.
Having to fight the actual flipping world soul that has apparently gone berserk isn’t fun. Hopping between dimensions is something for Quinn Mallory to do with his band of wacky friends. It’s not supposed to be how we experience Azeroth.
I really hope they rethink the mega server concept. It’s cool that they can do it technically, but its impact on the actual gameplay is terrible and I don’t see how they fix it without just recreating permanent layer sets; aka servers.

Yea, this whole phasing while in the middle of a zone or while in combat isnt good.

In classic you got a lot of quest with tons of mobs, mobs you have to carefully pull out, CC and take out strategically. Even more so when your under geared or under leveled. Phasing during this is like getting given a turd cake.. Wasting your time and in many cases getting your character killed.
-
Make Phasing ONLY happen when your going INTO or OUT OF a zone. This already happens once you leave Thunderbluff for example. Soon as you head down the hill from the main elevators you will notice you phase out or into another layer. You seriously dont want ANY phasing to happen when your up in northern Barrens for example doing the quest around the Sludgefen area..
I like the new changes to the layering system that where added in the recent patches. No longer having that annoying popup in the middle of the screen. Its now on the side above the chat windows. BUT, half the time it seems broken. Regardless forcing Layer Phasing in the middle of a zone IS BAD gameplay IMHO..

It’s also not functioning right. If you have the ground in view as you’re waiting somewhere, it twists then blurs every couple minutes or less. It’s really distracting.
And of course the phasing should be left up to the player to decide meaning if they want to stay in a layer for an hour, they shouldn’t get phased out until they want to do it. This every five minutes stuff really breaks gaming immersion. It’s aggravating.
While I’m at it, the game is way too grey and foggy. Down with the smog! There needs to be a fog slider put into graphics options. None of this “big developer ego” stuff where console commands like /console volumefog 0 are made not to work anymore, because they want to shove all the smog into your face 24/7. Why drag down our PCs’ performance for something we don’t want to see?

The layering technology is really the ugliest blemish on this product. It is just a bad experience all around. It feels terrible when it happens. I was on an airship with a bunch of people leaving Zephras and then when the instance change occurred to Mulgore I was suddenly on the ship alone. It felt AWFUL compared to classic
Why couldn’t we have servers that we can just swap between more readily? (With a cooldown)

Any time I group up it almost always ends up in me getting murdered when I get layered as the party disbands.
It’s such a terrible system. Mega server is going to fail, I hope to god they don’t actually go through with this. It just doesn’t work.
