Realm is full

So, I seem to be misunderstanding the new technology surrounding these new mega servers. I was under the impression that the new way of doing this meant there isn’t a server, there is an essentially endless layers of servers. As the player base grows and shrinks, the layers automatically repopulate to accommodate the number.

Why are we getting “realm full” if there is an endless number of layers? Or is it not what has been explained to me, or I’ve misunderstood (more likely the case) what this new way is.

You’d think they would’ve sorted this out in the beta…

This is my question. If beta is only a fraction of the possible player base, I shouldn’t be getting long queues. If these aren’t the mega servers with an endless level of layers, we are in trouble for launch.

The FULL Classic experience…now updated with even more Classic experience

There is a difference between rate limiting logins to not crash hardware/connections, and a server being actually full. Your likely running into the first which is basically a limitation of most network hardware/ the internet.

I read a while back that these are beta servers. Different equipment and not nearly as substantial. I imagine they are learning what capacity the servers have to learn how to scale out for launch. This is the first time aside from rush to login after restarts that I have had any kind of queue. Meh.

I get that completely. But if they can’t handle beta population, there is no way they will handle launch population.

This is one of those instances where I think they could bring modern QoL tech to Forever with cross realm grouping and region wide AH. It would make people more inclined to roll on the low pop server if they could still find groups on the high pop realms. The end result is the same for the players, it just spreads the load more evenly on the hardware.

Just logged on and was 764 in queue. Crazy a serverless realm is full. Launch will be atrocious.

Yea, that’s why I brought up the discussion. Now I get today is going to be probably the highest pop days for the realms as it’s Saturday in America, Sunday in Australia, and Saturday in Europe. All of these regions are playing on the couple of ruleset “servers”. But it’s only a portion of the people who will be playing on launch.

In the beta specifically there’s very likely caps in place to keep resource consumption from running away, because betas normally aren’t supposed to cost a lot to run. Those limits will no doubt be lifted on release.

From the sound of the posts they’ve made, the weren’t expecting anywhere near the level of interest that the beta has gotten and so they probably weren’t expecting to hit caps of any kind on it.

Its crazy there are so many people playing a freakin BETA. I guess people did want a classic+

This is an assumption.

I’ve been in almost every beta since BC and things that get tagged and people say “this is beta wait till launch, it will get fixed” never end up getting fixed, and the can is kicked down the road.

I’ve been in just about as many betas, starting with WotLK and work as a software dev. This may be one of those things but I doubt it, simply because normally there’s no problem with putting a hard low cap on server resources in the beta. I think it’s very likely we’re just hitting limits that were never intended to be hit.

I hope you are correct, time will tell.

Login server and the game server are 2 seperate things.

It’s the login server thats backed up.

Getting login queue after disconnect which should never happen. The system should distinguish between fresh logins and recent disconnects.

Update: after queue popped I ended up in a Westfall without NPCs. The beta realms are completely broken.

A little insight for those of you that haven’t worked in an information technology role that are may not know all the mechanisims behind the scenes and what they are doing. What they are most likely doing is density testing right now. So yes per what they stated as their technology are servers that can expand as needed to support the load. They essentially have “compute” resource containers that they can scale up or down based on demand. If they, however, keep scaling those out they would have problems understanding exactly how much load each “container can handle”. By keeping the beta, and this is part of the point of a beta, at a certain cap of players…they can tinker with exactly how full they allow each container to get, measure its performance, etc. This metric tells them at launch that a container can support say 10k players, but they dont know that until they stress test the containers…and if they allow endless players into it, it complicates that data collection process. So this is beta…so guys just let beta be beta and understand they are doing things to make this launch smooth and as promised. If we constantly get tons of login queues after November 4th…then we are without our bounds to call out that what they promised may be different than what they shipped. Remember, beta is for their benefit and not ours. They dont just put it out there to tease us, or so that we can get a sneak peak…they use it so that we as the player base become crowd sourced and unpaid testers.(Im a cloud migration architect for reference/credibility)

We looked into this, and found an issue that was causing the queue to fill, and we just fixed the issue.

Thanks for testing with us!

Goes to show how popular the beta is with a paywall eh? Crazy to think how much more people will be playing on release, I’m glad we’re able to put up numbers that can really test out the system they created

It could have waited until Monday, but thanks. Everything about this Beta has been amazing so far.
