I get to the character select screen without problem. It’s when I try to login to my character that the game gets stuck at 100%, crashes my entire computer, and I have to turn it off via power button. I had this installed on lutris before and had no issue until I messed with the graphics settings. From there, it crashed and wouldn’t let me get back into my character even after turning the settings back down. I switched to steam launch after, and it worked the first login, then proceeded to crash every time since after again, messing with the graphics settings. I’m relatively new to linux, so I tried many of the fixes I’ve seen in the forums already, with no luck.
I’m running bnet through steam on Linux CachyOS.
Processor: 7800x3d
GPU: NVIDIA 1080 Ti
Ram: 32 ddr5
Desktop environment: KDE Plasma 6
NVIDIA driver version is 580.178.04.
Everything else updated.
I’ve gone through some troubleshooting steps such as turning Secondary lighting off, setting all graphics to low, compatibility settings are turned off. I’ve also tried deleting the WTF, Cache, and D3D12 folders.
On the bnet app, I’ve set the command line argument -d3d11 to force dx11.
On steam I’ve set Launch Options to: “PROTON_SYNC_TYPE=sysv VKD3D_CONFIG=single_queue PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=0 %command% -dx11”.
One thing I’ve been doing is turning shadows and secondary lighting way down and disabling two of the advanced features (from the Mac post). This has kept my Linux experience pretty consistently good. I even gave it running on stream deck this way.
In my PC I’m running it via Lutris with proton 11, I think. And steam with my steam deck of course.
I may just have not produced the conditions for this bug to hit, but it also may be specific to particular setups.
On my 5950X + RX 9070 box running Fedora 44, Forever with default settings logs in just fine with both Proton Experimental as well as the latest GE-Proton.
Already doing those just didn’t mention them since OP said they tried lighting/shadow settings. Linux extreme stuttering - #10 by Saeg-371914 . It seems there’s a lot of different things that fix it to. Some have had luck with unchecking the 4 advanced graphics settings at the bottom, triple buffering, and toggling between directx 11 and 12. There’s also reports on the proton github wow forever issue to if nothing on the forum here helps. May have similar hardware or different settings they’ve tried to get around crashes.
Nvidia 4080 super here. I’m not home at the time of writing this, so I can’t give the exact names of the settings I tweaked, but will make a post later on how I fixed it.
I’ve isolated this to an issue with the new lighting engine, which thread locks the GPU due to an infinate loop when compiling the shaders. I was able to get a work around early on by disabling a lighting setting entirely, and setting shadows and secondary shadows to 0. Obviously the game looks goofy with all these settings off.
For a more desirable fix. I actually spent the past couople days and patched my drivers to add a cap to the tree traversal that was causing the lock + a few other tweaks, and I’m getting a stable 144 (targeted) FPS, which tanks to about 30FPS after an hour of gameplay.
I can’t tell if this is just a driver issue, game engine, or a combination of the two. But, judging from the Mac users having similar problems, I suspect there may be some work on the Dev’s side. Hard to say.
