Controller Support Feedback: Beta Impressions So Far!

Hey all,

First off, thank you for implementing native controller support, and for doing it this well even at this early stage. I searched the forums and didn’t see a dedicated feedback thread for this yet, so I wanted to start one.

For context: I’ve used console port for years in retail, and I played FF14 exclusively on controller because it’s easier on my hands. Seeing native controller support in WoW Forever was genuinely exciting, and overall it’s seamless, the interface, quests, crafting, and menus all work great.

That said, here’s what I’ve run into so far:

Item interaction inconsistency. Quest-starting items (The journal from human starting zone) don’t get the same “Use” prompt as other interactions (like the quest reward also in human starting zone to learn a gathering profession), so I have to move the mouse over to right-click the item in my bags manually. Would love to see that brought in line with the rest of the controller interactions.

Targeting feels inconsistent. It’s a bit choppy, and I’m not fully clear on how range factors in… for example, I couldn’t target critters at all. Not sure if that’s intentional or a bug, but it’d help to know how you’re classifying it. Separately, the Ally/Enemy targeting buttons seem to switch between round-robin selection and selecting whatever the center dot/crosshair is focused on, which makes targeting feel unpredictable. (May just be a learning curve but a visual/guide might help? Like the movement guide in class trials retail had)

Crosshair customization. The center reticle does a great job holding onto the mouse for controller play, but it would be nice to have the option to resize or adjust it.

Cross bar / Edit Mode limitations. You’re probably already aware, but just flagging it for anyone who hasn’t tried controller mode yet: the action bars (cross bars) can’t be edited, and nothing can be resized or adjusted in Edit Mode while using a controller. This traps the swing timer behind the crosshair buttons and the raid/party frames are teeny tiny!

Swing timer on the reticle? Since there’s already a custom cast bar in controller mode, it’d be great to have the option to show the swing timer as a visual on the center crossbar? Maybe? Thoughts?

Button remapping. Not game-breaking at all, and it’s easy to adjust to, but I’m used to jumping on a different button. Native support for remapping action buttons (jump included) would be a nice quality-of-life addition.

Thanks again for building this natively and this smoothly, it’s a huge step for controller accessibility. I’ll keep updating this thread as the Beta evolves!

Edited:

Ground-targeted items on the action bar. Items like the dynamite I crafted work fine in that they place the AoE indicator on the ground, but there’s no intuitive way to actually throw it. On PS5 I have to tap the center of the touchpad, which doesn’t feel natural at all. I’d expect using the same button I used to cast/activate the item to also be the one that throws it, rather than a separate, unrelated input.

Banking, auction house, and vendor interactions. Similar to the quest item issue, moving items in and out of bags is rough with a controller. When selecting an item in the bank or AH panel, it would be great if there were a button to deposit/withdraw or list it directly, rather than needing to drag and drop. The same goes for selling to a vendor — right now it seems like dragging is the only option, and having a button to deposit or put an item up (bank, AH, or vendor sell) straight from the inventory would make this much smoother on controller.

Built-in response/communication wheel. We already have an emote wheel, which is great, but something like FF14’s response wheel would be a fantastic addition alongside it — quick, pre-built responses like “Hello,” “Thank you,” “Let’s group up,” “Yes,” “No,” and similar common phrases. For controller players who may not have a keyboard within easy reach, this would remove the need to build out macros just to communicate basic things in a group or with other players. Since the emote wheel already exists, a communication/response wheel using the same kind of interface seems like a very achievable addition.

Fishing is a gamble. Nothing much to add here but it’s near impossible to fish on controller, the bobber has to land close enough for the controller dot to register it. If the bobber is too far then it’s a wasted fish. Fishing has gotten a lot better, there are still ranges that make fishing impossible but instead of 1 in 5 casts being interactable, now it’s 4 in 5 and a simple recast fixes it. A LOT better.

Gear sets are unusable on controller. There’s currently no way to save gear sets while using a controller. The character menu itself is buggy… you have to equip an item and back out to your stats before the tab option even appears to switch between Character, Gear Sets, or your pet (if you have one). Beyond that, actually trying to save a gear set doesn’t work at all: the game hangs waiting for you to select an icon, but there’s no way to select one. The bumper/shoulder buttons that normally let you tab between menus just toggle between Character and Bag instead of reaching the gear set name/icon selector, and there’s no visible option to actually save the set. Right now this feature seems completely inaccessible on controller.

“return to top” or “jump to end” when scrolling through a list. Currently, if you use the dpad to scroll down a list of context options, once you get to the bottom of the list you should be able to press down again and it returns to the top, or from the top press up and jump to the bottom. The reason this is important is because if there is an option 3rd from the bottom in a list of 25, it is much faster when you’re at the top of the list to press Up (bringing you to the last option), Up, Up then select, rather than pressing Down 23 times.

Currently unable to mouse over quests in the map. When you look at the map, you generally are able to mouse over quest objectives and see the area in which the quest takes place. I haven’t found a way to do this with the controller yet. This forces me to have to set down the controller and use my mouse.

Personal Resource Display Simple one here, this one is finally showing but cannot be moved and is off center.

Tried a steam controller and it flat out doesn’t work right. Left stick moves character. But right stick moves mouse cursor. Couldnt get camera to change at all. Eventually it even stopped working to move the character. Tried everything to get it to play nice withI no success. Switched to a razer brand Xbox controller and all was good.

Man with controller support I hope we get a native battle net launcher for the Steam deck

Should add, I use a ps5 controller and it natively identified the buttons and uses them. I dislike how I don’t know what the center button/pad does. It does move the mouse when I slide my finger around so I had to use that to click the “Tracking kobold” quest item since it seems there is no native quest item option except for clicking the item agian with the mouse but xbox does not have a trackpad so… unsure

Im am so happy to have the controller support, using xbox controller and everything works really good, but, I second everything the OP said. The edit mode is the most frustrating for me. It is working really well being that it is pretty new.

I gave it a shot with a pink Xbox Series X controller and it ran flawlessly, EXCEPT for the things OP mentioned. I am so glad they made this thread because I think this will be my preferred way to play once all the kinks are worked out!

With how often things change (example character creation I could not accept on controller and now this morning I cannot even select a character) I’ll try to collect things and post periodically. I don’t want to spam them with things that are WIP and I can tell are a bug. I mentioned the edit mode because I hope it was not a design choice to disable edit. They’re probably working to figure out how to make edit work with controller.

Edit: I had to disable and re-enable controller mode to fix the character select issue

I also do not like that I cannot edit the main XYBA buttons. Would be nice if I could set it up visually like consoleport too. I only want the button sections I am using currently to show up.

In comparison to console port, this built in needs some serious friendly tuning.

It is really limiting in comparison.

I use the gyro as a mouse in console port and flip back and forth utilizing the console port more but for fine tuning the mouse pointers helps so much

Also console ports customizing is so much easier

The ally and xbox controllers work wonderful. Its console port but native. Takes a little getting used to because its different than console port. But other than inviting people on ally it works great.

Edit: it does not like xbox controllers hardwired. i plugged mine in to charge it and it does not like it. must be bluetooth.

Are there ways to keep the mouse on at all times?

Or did someone cook up a guide yet?

I have not found a way, I need to violently shake my mouse to be able to click things. Which is not ideal, but again, Beta and Alpha for the controller aspect

Updating another item to original post:

I haven’t posted on forums in…well over a decade…but controller support has me so excited I needed to get on and log my 2 cents about my experience yesterday. As background, I play on steam deck and have been using console port for a while now. The vision I saw yesterday for native support is clearly going in a direction that will make it better. So below is the list of items I experienced that have to be included so that launch in November can be better than console port.

  1. On-Screen Keyboard: Typing is an essential part of playing the game. Console ports keyboard option does a great job of satisfying this need even without being perfect. On Steam deck i had inconsistent luck with getting the steam keyboard overlay to pop up. When it would bug out and not pop up, restarting the game would fix it. But using it was way worse thatn Console port’s in-game keyboard option. My 2 cents, copy what console port did as MVP for launch day. If there was a native on-screen keyboard option I could not find it yesterday.

  2. Mouse: So many gamepads have a touchpad that it needs to be better supported as an option. Steam Deck and steam controller are by far the BEST options for WOW due to their high quality dual trackpads. Lean into steam blizzard, HARD. Build your mouse functionality to assume I’m going to be running around with the left joystick and want to hover over items on the screen with my mouse using my right trackpad. Console port again comes out ahead here. It seems possible because I am able to click on auto-run and then get my mouse to pop back up after VIGEROUS movement on the trackpad for a couple seconds.

  3. L3, L4, R3, R4: Many PC controllers have more back buttons. Seems like the current gamepad support is built for console controllers. PERHAPS ya’ll are doing this in prep for a true port to a console. Even so I’d argue prep for the steam machine as your console. Assume people are going to have high end PC controls like the steam controller. Thanks to Steam I was able to set up my back buttons to be useful. L3 = Enter, L4 = Escape, R3 = F1 (F1 Keybound to camera zoom in), R4 = F2 (F2 Kyebound to camera zoom out). But I shouldn’t have to have done that. Set up some default functionality for these buttons/let them be recognized as existing and natively keybound as L3, L4, R3, R4 as a MVP.

  4. Edit Mode: I’m going to assume here that edit mode is coming, and only talk about the features edit mode has to have. First, I need to be able to rebind the “special actions” set up as default on XYAB to any other button combo I wish. I would prefer those by on RTrigger - XYAB personally. Second allow for hiding of the modifier action bars. I’ve got limited screen space on steam deck, don’t always need that on screen, see Console port again. Swing Timer integraded with cast bar. Return to standard party frames. Party/raid frame resize options.

  5. Text size: For whatever reason text size is not resizing for me. I need to shrink my UI size again..steam deck screen…but to read quest text I need to be able to size up the font there. The immersion and dialog ui addons both do a great job of handling quest text boxes, look to them for models.

Bonus wish item) Dialog UI. That addon has broken for me, but the couple month’s I got of having an AI voice, prompted to change itself to represent the attributes of the person I’m interacting with, was THE MOST FUN I HAVE EVER HAD in WoW. I have done all the things…but read quest text. Sorry, minor attention deficit here plus trying to keep up with friends who don’t read at all. I missed out on so many amazing things Blizzard has written because of skipping quest text. Dialog UI had me deeply immersed in storylines I didn’t know existed on quest chains I’ve done dozens of times. Belly laughing at jokes I had skipped over. Learning the incredible personalities of NPC’s I’d blown off a dozen times previously. Text size now matters to me only because Dialog UI got me addicted to the writing in Classic. I know there are hundreds of thousands of people like me out there. You’ve done the hard part of writing all these great things. Bring them to masses with an AI narrator as seen with the Dialog UI addon.

I like these, One thing I was curious about is something like in 14! I’m adding this to my observation original post:

Built-in response/communication wheel. We already have an emote wheel, which is great, but something like FF14’s response wheel would be a fantastic addition alongside it — quick, pre-built responses like “Hello,” “Thank you,” “Let’s group up,” “Yes,” “No,” and similar common phrases. For controller players who may not have a keyboard within easy reach, this would remove the need to build out macros just to communicate basic things in a group or with other players. Since the emote wheel already exists, a communication/response wheel using the same kind of interface seems like a very achievable addition.

I do like your input though and it’s 100% console controller gamepad based but the ability to edit/remap would help a lot

Been playing with an xbox controller, no complaints so far.

I assumed they took the ConsolePort addon design and improved it further. Instead they removed its basic functionality. I am glad I didn’t play the WoW Forever beta now.

iJUST WANT TO KMOW WHO IS USING A CONTROLLER SO I CAN NOT INVITE

Id like them to use the controls ffxiv uses. I dont like using triggers and bumpers as inputs like consoleport. I use it in ffxiv to switch bars, target swap, etc. I haven’t tried it here yet, as i have a ps4 controller and its needing hardwired. Im out of usb slots. But i have a steam deck. Would love to play it on that.

They function the same as 14 controls (at least the way I had them) where the trigger has to be held for the ability. I hardwire a ps5 and it’s pretty close to the 14 and consoleport but slight button mapping is different
