Midnight Update: Steady Flight Unleashed

Greetings, travelers of Azeroth!

We’re happy to share that, with a hotfix that that is now live, Steady Flight in Midnight and The War Within zones will no longer be unlocked by those expansions’ Pathfinder achievements. Any player-character who can use Skyriding can now use Steady Flight, with no additional unlocking required.

Why Require an Unlock in the First Place?

Questing through Azeroth has always had a … complicated relationship with flying. There are countless cases where the ability to fly trivializes a challenge or ruins the pacing of an experience. An example, in the form of a targeted kill quest:

  • Without flight, players fight their way through an enemy stronghold, taking out guards, keeping an eye out for patrols, and generally being heroic until they ultimately reach their target. The experience tests a few different skills, has a satisfying buildup and conclusion, and matches the player’s status as a hero.
  • With flight, the player bypasses all risk, drops right on top of their target’s head, kills the target without any repercussions, and then flies away. Yes, the quest is completed much more efficiently, but the shortcut reduces the challenge, removes elements of gameplay, and robs the player of much of the experience.

That said, players love their mounts, love being efficient, and love seeing the world from above, so flight has stuck around. Different expansions have handled rulesets differently, but we’ve generally sought compromise in the form of: your first time through the game, your flight capabilities are limited, and then after you’ve explored most of the world, your flight capability is less limited.

In the Dragonflight expansion, we introduced Skyriding. Skyriding (then called Dragonriding) was unlocked very early on in the expansion, with a restrictive Vigor economy to manage (remember waiting for Vigor to recharge?) and a complex talent tree to unlock. Steady Flight was restricted until players completed a Pathfinder achievement added during patch 10.2, and that has been the paradigm we’ve followed until now: Skyride while leveling, Steady Flight available later.

Why Change Now?

When Skyriding was introduced, it was only available in the Dragon Isles. It was built and intended for experienced players level 60 and higher – hence the complex Vigor economy and the talent tree. Since then, as we’ve adapted Skyriding to become a more universal way of traversing Azeroth (available in all flyable zones, starting at level 10!), it is no longer appropriate to think of it as an endgame feature. Instead, it’s been retooled to be approachable for new players, with charges rather than Vigor, and fewer opportunities for missteps that result in downtime with no flight capability – it just works.

With these changes in place, the distinction between Skyriding and Steady Flight has diminished greatly so that it no longer really makes sense to distinguish between Skyriding and Steady Flight while leveling.

What Happens Next?

As we mentioned above, we’re unlocking Steady Flight in all Midnight and The War Within zones, via hotfix.

In the future, we will continue to look at how the ability to fly affects our play experiences. Since the release of Midnight, we’ve seen some great discussion about how Midnight “hits different” from a ground mount, and we agree. It’s fun experiencing quests at a less frenetic pace than that which is enabled through flight, and it’s rewarding to engage with the world from the ground level. While we don’t have any plans to restrict flight access meaningfully in the future, we’ll keep these discussions in mind as we continue building WoW. As always, keep the thoughts and ideas coming! Your feedback truly does shape what the game becomes in the future.

In the meantime, mount up (in whichever way you prefer)!

Good change. Thanks for doing it and listening to feedback.

Biiiiiig W. There was never a reason to have it locked.

I totally get the reason. This is a good change because ideally, it gives player the choice. People can go around on their mounts via ground and explore or fly if need be. Win-win. Midnight definitely hits different and is very nostalgic, a WoW feeling I’ve wanted back for a long while. Lots of well made places to explore both from sky and ground.

Good change and thanks for the thorough insight. This kind of developer insight into changes is very cool because it helps people understand what is going on, why it is the way it is and so on and so forth.

Now time to go back to azeroth

So now we can AFK in the air instead of on the ground. Fancy.

I see more zones like Undermine in our future.

This is great for people who want to use a ground mount. So let them do that and everyone else can be happy flying. No compromise needed.

Thank you…and even though many improvements have been made for people experiencing motion sickness, this probably puts an end to it. It’s a little late for me, but just knowing that many will now not have to enjoy getting tangled in the roof of the Den or bouncing between buildings in Silvermoon makes me feel a little better.

Keep it a choice for everyone. Ride, fly, zoom around, or walk…choice is good.

OMG, this is a huge win. Thank you, thank you, thank you, truly. I’m stunned that Blizzard has finally listened about this.

Insane it took this long for you guys to open your damn eyes and give up your crusade agains’t Steady Flight that began with Warlords of Draenor.

It only took 12 years but we finally won!

We have been over this before. This is not the problem of flight, its the problem of the quest design being in an open field instead of actually thinking and creating set pieces.

That has been proven to be false, even more so with this most recent trilogy of xpacs. The amount of dangerous flying mobs that stun you out of mounted are too high, and yall know it. We cant even mine/herb without being accosted and forced to fight.

THIS STATEMENT DOES NOT BODE WELL FOR THE FUTURE OF FLIGHT. IF THERE IS ANOTHER FLIGHT WAR I WILL QUIT.

Ah i can stretch my wings and hover around as I please!

honestly I am in the boat of merge the two flying systems. I would like to still be able to steady fly and then push a few buttons to go faster if I want to without having to choose one or the other. Skyriding feels draining to me, but steady flying is much too slow. I would like a medium.

This is good for the game.

I love fast flight, but I know some don’t.

This way everyone is happy.

Good they’re unlocking steady flight, but that explanation leads me to believe they’re totally gonna lock all flight until completing the campaign for the first time next expansion.

Well damn I wish this had happened earlier before I did pathfinder lol. I hope you will never lock steady flying behind achievements again in the future.

I do have one problem with how you’re making the game now. In Haranir, you’ve made several levels of mobs and we get attacked no matter what height we’re at. You’ve added mobs to EVERY node of herb and mine. I don’t understand why your stance on flying has been this agressive but people like to see the world you created from above and see the picture as a whole.

I will accept this outcome. I hope we put this to rest once for all.

flying should just be unlocked at lvl 90 once you hit 90 you can fly how ever you want to fly, leveling is the DF style but once you hit 90 you can then switch.

or when expansion launches choice which flight you want to start with and unlock once you hit 90. If you want to start with normal flying to level select that option then once you hit 90 you unlock DF style.

Per usual the issue is still your quest design and philosophies. NOT player agency of choice for immersion or efficiency.

This is good news, I prefer steady flight for herbing and my engineer’s gyrocopter is better.
