12.1 Unholy Death Knight Feedback

Here are our Changes

Here is our Tier set

We just went through this last patch.

Unhooking Soul Reaper from Putrefy makes the execute phase bloated, and you are actively trying to reduce the number of minions we have out at once, making soul reaper into a 15 second CD Apocalypse is not the way to do that.

Why are you trying to break something that works, if you want us to press Putrefy more outside of execute, remove the Soul Reaper proc from Reaping. Dark Transformation already boosts pet damage from commander of the dead so its kind of redundant to apply another pet damage boost to a single target.

Okay? How does Doubling Scourge Strike’s Damage For 30 seconds reduce the throughput for major dps cooldowns, also will the order’s trigger The Rune of the Apocalypse?

Also if we are willing to “make major rotational changes” by screwing around with Soul Reaper’s effects, why is Festering Scythe maintaining it’s current iteration it effectively cuts the cost of Festering Strike in half.

now in Regards to the tier set

Now I am not someone who thinks every tier set needs to or should “Change gameplay” because well not every change of gameplay is a positive change however if the goal is for tier in season 2 to be more complex than season 1 then a completely passive thing that just improves the thing we do anyway is not..all that complex.

I think the intent of that Soul Reaper change is to make it something you actually want to press on cooldown as opposed to only pressing during Dark Transformation.

With it sending Putrefy, you don’t want to press it outside of your cooldowns at all.

Do we really need ANOTHER rework? Just leave it as is for a bit its fine you can revisit it for Last Titan.

You mean Putrefy right? Everything I can find is that we use soul reaper in execute phase on cooldown.

It’s not going to change that

You do not. You currently press Soul Reaper only during DT, because Commander buffs Putrefy and Magus and you don’t want it sending Putrefy outside of that window.

And after the change, it will remain, because it buffs our pet damage. You still want to stack that with DT anyway. We might see one or two uses outside of that window, but I really doubt much will change.

You can take this with a grain of salt because I have never been particularly impressed with Commander of the Dead even going back to Legion, but that sounds like a problem with Commander of the Dead rather than Soul Reaper.

Lesser Ghoul charges are a lot less important and more plentiful than Putrefy charges, so you shouldn’t be actively avoiding casting Soul Reaper outside of your DT window like you do currently.

Obviously you’ll still want to use Soul Reaper during your DT window… but DT resets Soul Reaper’s cooldown anyway.

I’m getting really tired of the patch to patch reworking of unholy. I get that after a major rework there’d be necessary tweaks and tuning to bring it all together, but this isn’t just tuning some numbers and values. I’m tired boss, I love unholy, but I’m tired of having to relearn my spec every season and sometimes during.

Can you not touch unholy amount of summons? That’s one of the best parts of the unholy rework. The new lord of the dead talent looks fine and already reduces the amount of minions, leave the rest alone.
And instead of changing crap that’s not broken or boring, what about fixing the god damn mindless Scourge strike spam, and the irrelevance of festering scythe?

Army of the Dead changes with Death and Epidemic orders should be removed from Scourge Strike and added to Death Coil and Epidemic respectively. Adjust accordingly due to reduced spamability of said runic spenders.

So you don’t want us thinking about using Blightfall ever do you? The loss of the season 1 tier set and now this change effectively just removed that talent from the game. Good job!

San’layn is completely DoA at this point.

Good, Blightfall’s playstyle has always been dumb and gamey. It’s not like you can play it without San’layn anyway, there was no reason for them to decouple that mechanic from San’layn.

San’layn direly needs a rework that focuses in on one central theme instead of failing to do like 5 separate ones.

It’s not great that San’layn is DoA, but I’m more concerned about our dead disease capstone and the fact that diseases continue to be an afterthought for a spec with a strong rot identity.

We shouldn’t need both San and plagues to be good to have a disease build. If the correct answer is always diseases + San or pets + Riders, then what’s even the point of these hero talents?

Furthermore, the new tier sets (and most of the patch changes) are also pet heavy and do not affect diseases at all.

Very disappointing :-1:

Hihi me again from beta feedback threads and Eu lands.
Woke up to this week’s PTR changes and feel like I need to write feedbacks.

I feel like this is the battle of intentions that got bounced back and forth a fair bit in beta, trying to reduce durations on summons to keep the play space in check, nothing wrong with this.
But I feel some aspects of this 12.1 rework don’t land, and re-tread things from beta.
For example: Demo Warlocks in Alpha had their minions reworked and numbers hard capped (9 imps only), and it just didn’t work or fit for them.

This is perfect, and its fun, and its graphical. This is a perfect way to reduce minion bloat.
Hopefully it’s “magus with higher duration = damage”, gives us some min maxing potential choosing when to Putrefy.

I recognise in a world where Cycle of Death exists gave far too many Putrefies, and ramped the Apex way higher than it was originally introduced in Beta. Oh well was a neat mechanic. :headstone:

Currently Soul Reaper reduces amount of GCDs needing to be used by combining Soul Reaper and Putrefy.
Now consuming Lesser Ghoul stacks means needing to generate more stacks. Which means more Festering Strike, which we really don’t wanna do, costing two GCDs.

This brings back all the awkward cooldown setup of Apocalypse:
Needing to “bank” 3 “Festering Wounds” before every Dark Transformation, so you can Soul Reaper effectively.

The benefits of using Soul Reaper on low health targets might be completely eaten up by the Rune resource drain of having to Festering Strike more often.

I feel like the opener now needs more than one Festering Strike/Scythe combo to setup both Soul Reaper, and the new Army of the Dead Orders mechanic.

It also behaves weirdly with other Lesser Ghoul stack consuming effects: e.g.

  • It does trigger Army of the Dead’s new Orders mechanic. But only once, even through you consume 3 stacks.
  • It doesn’t trigger Harbinger of Doom’s cooldown reduction of Putrefy.
  • It doesn’t trigger San’layn’s Transfusion talent, which admittedly says it’s only triggered by Vampiric Strike. (And San’layn’s scattershot design is a separate issue.)

With consuming 3 stacks, one would expect it to do the same as other effects consuming stacks.

Ok now we get to the meat and potatoes of this feedback post. :meat_on_bone: :potato:

So Army was updated in late beta to give longer duration “empowered Lesser Ghouls”.
There remains no buff or way outside of the spell data to know which of your Ghouls are these special ones. They don’t look any different, it’s like if Imp Gang Boss was just a passive damage increase rather than a whole different Imp model.
Even San’layn’s Transfusion talent, gives a buff and bloody glow spell effect to the “empowered” Lesser Ghoul. (Today I learned.)

This is even worse now Army is “summon or empower”, so extends existing Ghouls 30 seconds and giving a hard cap of 8 ghouls.

This mechanic has many weirdness and bugs with it, as currently seen today on PTR.

  1. Casts of Scourge Strike cause the Army to zip along the floor like Warrior’s Charge.
They have perfectly usable Leap skill and animations to go along with it.
Its really weird to see them zipping, anchored to the floor like Beast Mastery pets with Kill Command etc.
They look like they go behind the target’s position etc.
  2. Damage attribution: currently reading the combat log, it’s “Lesser Ghoul’s Death Orders does X.” and “Your Epidemic Orders does Y.”
This is weird and opens the question of if all of our pet scaling effects, affect Epidemic Orders correctly.
  3. Naming and trigger spells: Death and Epidemic Orders seem to imply they function with Death Coil and Epidemic. They don’t. Only Scourge Strike (and Soul Reaper ?) trigger Orders.
There has been a lot of misunderstanding the idea, wishful thinking that Epidemic would trigger Epidemic Orders. Thinking there would be a variety in how to make your army do damage.
It’s also weird how Soul Reaper triggers Orders, but it triggers once, but consumes 3 Festering Strike stacks. (this is a whole other issue)
  4. Reducing the power of a lot of talents and causing one to cease functioning all together.
Rune of Apocalypse, less damage with less Lesser Ghouls.
Necromancer’s Cunning, less damage with less Lesser Ghouls.
Soul Reaper, less bonus to damage with less Lesser Ghouls.
Infected Claws, less damage with less Lesser Ghouls.
Doomed Bidding, stops functioning during Army of the Dead:
Consuming Sudden Doom cannot summon a 9th Lesser Ghoul and Sudden Doom doesn’t trigger Orders either.

Commander of the Dead, less bonus to damage with less Lesser Ghouls.
Outnumber, less bonus to damage with less Lesser Ghouls.
All of these might be small meaningless damage reductions, but as a whole reduces the power of talents.
  5. Scourge Strike triggering Orders conflicts with Apex Talent.
Army gives 40 Runic Power, and Apex gives you Necrotic Coil/Graveyard.
It’s clear you want to prioritise Runic Power spenders and Sudden Doom procs during Apex currently, with Army giving RP to kickstart you.
But now Sudden Doom doesn’t summon Lesser Ghouls, and Scourge Strike is the only thing that Orders your Army. These goals clash.
  6. No control over ST vs AoE.
This has been a persistent thing with this 12.0 rework.
There’s only one rotational change with AoE: Replacing Death Coil with Epidemic.
Spending Runes is only Scourge Strike, and now Army auto AoEs if there’s 3 or more targets, no way for us to control if we wanna focus target or not.

Also Showstopping Bug!

This effect is currently marked as “Your Epidemic Order” in the combat log, and therefore seems to have a range limitation.
If you Scourge Strike from outside melee range, Epidemic Order doesn’t function.
So yeah lots of weirdness issues with new army. I recognise wanting to reduce burst and reduce minion bloat, but hard capping Lesser Ghouls with a new Orders mechanic isn’t great.

This initially reads as just reducing burst goals.
But quietly the second part of Commander of Dead has been removed without note:
The duration of Lesser Ghouls are increased by 50% of your Mastery.
With the removal of this, Lesser Ghouls have also quietly had their baseline durations increased from 6 sec to 8 sec.
When this was introduced in Beta, I quietly wondered if this pet duration increase might just get folded into baseline Mastery, but now it’s just gone. Ok then.
More hard static control over minions not lasting longer than intended.

Surely this just solves the minion bloat issue for everyone, without having to deal with this weirdly implemented hard capping rework of Army of the Dead?

This is my Feedback on initial changes concluded.
Thanks for reading my Ted Talk.

Coming soon, a ramble on Disease length and mechanics, and whyyy..???

It hasn’t been “gamey” since it was coupled with dark transformation. All you do is pop it before DT’s buff ends that is it. I run it in raid and my logs are public.

Also god forbid there is any form of skill expression with this spec.

It’s funny how “skill expression” always seems to translate to “mechanic that is easy to screw up, crippling your damage output because you forgot to press button 0.1 nanoseconds before a buff ended”.

Just have it trigger automatically when DT ends, easy.

This isn’t beta pestilence here. Mistiming it doesn’t cripple your dps just like accidentally hitting your epidemic instead of death coil doesn’t but obviously someone who is using it correctly will do more damage.

As long as you can still manually pop it within the DT window I would be okay with this. If you can’t this talent would be completely unusable in any content that isn’t raid.

Army of the Dead

The Good

  • Death Order and Epidemic Order seem cool.

The Bad

  • Death Order and Epidemic Order being executed via Scourge Strike.
  • Scourge Strike not spawning Lesser Ghouls during Army of the Dead.
  • What happens if we lose the zombies during this 30 sec? PvP talent Stitchmaster for example?

Solution: Death and Epidemic Orders are executed when using Death Coil or Epidemic respectively. Scourge Strike returns to generating Lesser Ghouls at all times.

Soul Reaper

Does this now just summon 3 addition lesser ghouls or does it conjure 3 Magus of the Dead? Current wording isn’t explicit. (Unable to test atm)

The Good

  • If Magus of the Dead = This is fantastic
  • If Lesser Ghouls = Still good, but signficantly less so.
  • Putting Putrefy back into the players hand and allowing it to be used when needed instead of hoarding for Soul Reaper is a win IMO.

The Bad

  • Burst will now require extra globals.

Solution: If the number of lesser ghouls is a problem, why not have Soul Reaper summon either Magus of the Dead to trigger a free Lord of the Dead during execute, or perhaps a Super Zombie aka the shambler from the Legion artifact, but have it move like the target owes it money.

Reaping

The Good

  • Execute damage for three abilities.

The Bad

  • Does not effect disease, pet or Epidemic damage.
  • Compounds the stacking of cooldowns problem with the Dark Transformation reset.

Solution 1: Add Epidemic, Lesser Ghouls/Magus and disease damage to the ability. Additionally, Soul Reaper has a chance to instantly reset and be used on any target.
Solution 2: Reaping instead buffs Soul Reaper damage and ability bonus damage by X%, additionally Soul Reaper has a chance to instantly reset and be usable on any target. Occurs more frequently against lower health targets.

Putrefy

The Good

  • Not having to hold onto Putrefy charges so you can use them during Soul Reaper.

The Bad

  • We will now have to track Magus of the Dead for optimal Putrefy usage to maximise our Lord of the Dead uptime. This will be unavoidable with the current free Putrefy casts from Forbidden Knowledge.

Solution 1 (Coolest): Forbidden Knowledge (Rank 3) gives Dread Plague a 20% chance of raising a Skeletal Archer (All Will Serve) for X sec.
Solution 2 (Best): Forbidden Knowledge (Rank 3) gives Dread Plague a 20% chance to activate or extend Dark Transformation for X sec.
Solution 3 (Worst): Lord of the Dead is summoned only through player Putrefy cast summoned Magus of the Dead.

Blightfall

The Good: None

The Bad: Was good when it did more damage than the base diseases, but at 100% why waste a global unless the target is about to die? Could be useful in PvP but I think it is also additionally nerfed there.

Solution: Replace with Necrotic Plague. Just do it.

Outnumber

The Good

  • Makes lesser ghouls AoE.

The Bad

  • No longer grants additional ghoul duration via Mastery.
  • Reduction in the maximum number of ghouls to 8 will definitely hurt this. How much I can’t say but the simulation guys will no doubt have the numbers run soon. In the mean time, why don’t we have something a little more flavourful here?

Solution 1: Dark Transformation empowers the Claw attack of your Lesser Ghouls to Sweeping Claws. Additionally, whenever you summon a Lesser Ghoul or Magus of the Dead, summon one more.
Solution 2: Dark Transformation empowers the Claw attack of your Lesser Ghouls to Sweeping Claws. Additionally, Doomed Bidding now raises a Magus of the Dead in addition to a Lesser Ghoul.

Superstrain

The Good: None

The Bad: Dread Plague damage isn’t anything to write home about, so this talent is weak.

Solution: If no additional nearby target, the enemy suffering from your Dread Plague takes the 75% additional damage tick. This should also count for **Forbidden Knowledge (Rank 3).
