Aye, I’ve never seen a pre patch 1.12 AV game, they are still legend to me. Would love to experience that!
This. Every AV you’d zone out and get whispers from people asking who won while trade and general would be buzzing about it. It was like having a Super Bowl every 10-15 hours.
I feel like they chose 1.12 AV for PVP balance, so that you don’t get an honor decay
“I wish they would bring back bad players and LoK taking two hours to farm, and being kited into the alliance base by a single hunter while horde die in one shot to the archers.”
Na.
Honestly they shouldn’t even put AV back in. World PVP is so much fun before AV exists.
rosy lens strikes again.
the reason battles in AV vanilla lasted so long was mostly due to:
- there was no automatically created raid! you had to make your own!
- you had to have reputation to access repair vendors and specific npc abilities. few knew how to gain the rep quickly to get past this bottleneck
- deaths to NPCs even in a PVP instance mean a 10% durability hit
- most of your deaths in AV were to NPC archers or NPC zerg trains when somebody who had no idea how aggro worked pulled everything in creation because it was an instance there was no evade initially.
- so running around the BG naked due to broken gear after 30m was a very real thing
- players had no idea what the objectives were. there was no tutorial and only a few vague introductory questlines brought you into the zone
- a lot of people would join soley to fight korrak for the IBS weapon questline. anytime either side made it past the field of strife (middle) a group would derail them and attempt to down korrak. while they attempted that the other side would push past and wipe them from the side/behind, then vice versa. lots of deaths. naked people as above
- those that did kill korrak had their quest done and left the BG. tourists only.
- having a raid equipped tank to kill the opposing boss wasn’t common. most could barely clear strat/scholo still.
if the korrak quest required winning the battleground more people would have stayed and avoided the constant FoS tug of war most likely. same for pvp deaths and durability being excised.
once players learned the objective of the boss and burning towers it was a zerg fest. with the amount of knowledge out there now changing the above two things with og AV would still probably be a blitz fest by both sides albeit much slower paced.
Wait we wont even be able to summon the bosses?
I don’t think you understand the type of people that are going to be playing Classic.
Edit - oops maybe not you the other guy.
yes we can. That can still be done in retail. Pretty much all the summonable things can still be done even in the retail version. It is just that it takes too long for it to ever happen.
It is frustrating that the 15th anniversary event “classic alterac valley” gets 1.8 AV but the actual classic version of WoW gets 1.12
Old AV is one of the main reasons I subbed. Give us an option to play it.
I Think blizzard is using Retail aniversary event to Test old AV before they add it into Classic, its too much of a risk of adding something wonderful like OG alterac without any tests.
They may have the sever blades with all of the info, but rebuilding something like OG alterac from scratch may be a challenge on the “updated” WoW engine.
Also you can still use reinforcements or even summon the bosses in modern alterac, but no one does it because they zergrush into the keeps and forget that everything else exists.
Also the Lack of Knowledge, since 90% of the players who mostly does Alterac in retail doesn’t know that you can upgrade your troops or summon bosses
You and I had very different AV experiences.
I’m sorry for your loss.
Layering=/=Sharding. Not to mention, it’s temporary for the purpose of not having dead servers.
The same level of customer support that we used to see is nearly impossible for Blizzard to match because of how the company has changed. They don’t have scores of game masters taking care of their tickets anymore, and considering this game isn’t going to make them tons of money, they can’t afford to bring in 50-100 people for this sole purpose. It’s less about money, and more about feasibility.
The 1.12 data was absolutely not cut and pasted into the modern client. It was used heavily for reference, but Blizzard even admitted that trying that method was going to take more time than to carefully copy the code over and dealing with discrepancies between the data and the client as they went.
Stop spreading misinformation.
That… is actually kind of promising. I can only hope they’re trying to put something together and seeing if they can make it work in Classic, and given it’s all in testing, they’re just not making any promises yet. I did some reading up, and it sounds like there’s still some balance issues to work out, but they even seem to be attempting to re-implemented mines, though they apparently weren’t doing any damage.
If the devs are quietly trying to test a 1.8 to put in to Classic… I would be very happy.
Where are you getting the info from?
Mostly googling – primary results I read through some were:
https://www.reddit.com/r/wow/comments/cutyoj/alterac_valley_15th_anniversary_informational/
and somewhere around post 28 of the thread over here:
https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/t/ptr-15th-anniversary-alterac-valley-play-with-the-blues/260941
I’m at work so I can’t really go full-fledged trawling.
I just searched for WoW anniversary Alterac Valley.
Just read the reddit link. If that version is left out of classic, then someone on the staff has a hardcore hate for classic players.
Can’t believe people are still butthurt about a different version of AV being used.
I can. People are upset about this, and will continue to be upset until it gets rectified.
I loved the day long battles. I can recall playing for hours on end, pushing back and forth mid-field, training Korrax into the alliance and watching the chaos erupt. It was a huge deal to summon the ram/wolf riders and the shamans/druids. Getting the wyverns and griffins up was important! It was an even bigger deal when Ivus or Lokholar were unleashed. Getting to drive the Shredder was awesome, I only did it once but totally remember how fun it was to have the entire front line of the alliance focused on me with my team backing me up for a handful of glorious minutes. These events were exciting when they happened. They NEVER happen anymore.
I also remember putting in 8+ hours and finally leaving out of exhaustion, only to wake up the next morning and jump right back into the same AV match! When one ended it was a big ordeal! I remember those days fondly, I remember specific things that happened. I dont remember any outstanding fun/fantastic moments from when AV changed to a 6 minute honor rush. I have more fun memories from a short time that AV was a epic scale battle than 10+ years of 6 minute sprints. That is why I would love to see the original AV in play again.
